Infamous Christmas number one battles from ‘worst ever song’ that sparked brawl to beef between Little Mix & footie team

EACH year there is a fierce battle between musicians vying for the UK Christmas No1 – but the winner isn’t always someone you would expect. For the last five years running YouTuber LadBaby – real name Mark Hoyle – and his wife Roxanne clinched the top spot with their novelty songs about sausage rolls.
LadBaby clinched the fifth Christmas No1 last year – surpassing the amount held by The BeatlesCredit: PA
In 2022, the comedy duo overtook The Beatles’ Christmas No1 record after claiming their fifth win – the most achieved by any act in British music history.
This year, fans of The Pogues have campaigned for Fairytale of New York to take the Yuletide Prize in memory of frontman Shane McGowan, who died last month.
But they face tough competition from TikTok star supergroup Creator Universe, Eurovision star Sam Ryder, Wham’s timeless hit Last Christmas, and a dance track called Check Meowt, about a viral cat called Nala.
History shows us that the battle for the Christmas No1 slot is tense, tough and sometimes totally bizarre.

Here we reveal some of the weirdest – from one rivalry that ended in an on-stage custard pie fight to the novelty act who received “hate mail” and was labelled “antichrist” by angry fans.
    Mr Blobby vs Take That

Mr Blobby claimed the Christmas No1 slot in 1993 with his bizarre, eponymously titled song.
It was originally performed on Noel’s House Party and featured odd lyrics and squelching sounds throughout.
They included: “Blobby, oh Mr Blobby, If only you could make us understand. Blobby, oh Mr Blobby, your influence will spread throughout the land.”

Bizarrely, it knocked both Meat Loaf’s I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That) and Take That’s Babe off the No1 spot and spent three weeks in pole position.
Critics weren’t impressed, with MTV stating Mr Blobby had “tried to kill music… with what might be the worst song of all time”.
It was also named the worst-ever festive song in an HMV poll and placed sixth in a Channel 4 poll of the 100 worst pop songs in history.
In 2016, Take That’s Gary Barlow got his revenge when he attacked Mr Blobby by tackling the inflatable character to the ground on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man Christmas Special.
The singer then dragged Blobby offstage by his legs. Later, the audience was told the character was “getting CPR”.

    Benny Hill vs Slade

Slade, T-Rex and Isaac Hayes were all favourites for Christmas No1 back in 1971.
But it was Benny Hill’s hit Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West) that won over the public.
The comedic song told the story of a randy milkman who fell in love with a widow only to come under threat from a love rival who made pork pies.
Benny’s absurd hit – which won over songs like Slade’s Coz I Love You – was filled with innuendos and cheeky lines including “Ernie got his cocoa there three times a week”.
In 2006, ex-Prime Minister David Cameron featured the song on his Desert Island Discs tracks.
    Eminem vs Bob The Builder
Neil Morrissey’s cartoon brickie Bob the Builder beat Eminem and other stars in the 2000 Yuletide race
Songwriter Paul Joyce branded the win over Westlife ‘ridiculous, but incredible’Credit: Alamy
Seven years on from Take That’s humiliating defeat to Mr Blobby, bad-boy rapper Eminem and boyband Westlife suffered a similar fate.
The US rapper’s hit Stan and the Irish group’s song What Makes A Man proved no match for cartoon tradesman Bob the Builder.
The show’s theme tune Can We Fix It? clinched the No1 spot in 2000.
Voiced by Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey, it sold 240,000 within its first week alone before becoming the UK’s biggest-selling single of the year – much to the annoyance of Westlife and Eminem.
Paul Joyce, who wrote the song, admitted the moment was “ridiculous, but incredible” and he was especially surprised to beat Westlife due to them being “an unassailable pop phenomenon”.
He added: “I don’t think the band or their fans thought they could be challenged by a cartoon brickie.
“When we went to No1, Sky TV interrupted Christmas dinner for an interview, I thought ‘This will never happen again’.”
The X Factor vs Rage Against The Machine

In 2009, English DJ Jon Morter and his wife Tracy launched a social media campaign to end The X Factor’s “monopoly” over Christmas No1s after winning four years in a row.
In protest, the couple urged the public to download copies of Rage Against The Machine’s 1992 song Killing In The Name.
Simon Cowell branded the campaign “stupid” and “cynical” but it only appeared to spur on fans.
Rage Against The Machine bandmember Tom Morello said winning the festive race would be “a wonderful dose of anarchy”.
Soon Foo Fighters star Dave Grohl, Muse, The Prodigy, and even Paul McCartney backed the campaign.
The song beat The X Factor star Joe McElderry’s cover of The Climb and raised £70,000 for homelessness charity Shelter.
They sold 502,000 copies, 52,000 more than Joe – Sony Records were arguably the real winners as both acts were signed to them.
Joe later told The Guardian he “didn’t take it personally” as he knew the rebellion was “directed at Simon and the show” not him.
He added: “It was the least Christmassy record ever.”
    Little Mix vs Rangers

In 2016, a feud developed between fans of Little Mix and Rangers FC supporters over their Christmas No1 battles.
It followed football fans’ social media campaign to get the 1960s hit Glad All Over to the top of the charts in tribute to their player Joe Garner.
Little Mix fans were not impressed as it “threatened” to derail the girl band’s chance of clinching a festive chart-topper.
On X, formerly Twitter, Rangers fans joked: “Any truth in the rumour that Rangers casuals and Little Mix casuals are organising a rumble??”
Another shared a photo of football supporters clashing with police and wrote: “Rangers at Little Mix away.”
One irate Little Mix fan tweeted: “I’m sorry but if that joke football song ruins Touch’s chance of being #1, I am deleting my account.”
Neither of the songs won – instead the victor was bookies’ favourite Clean Bandit with Rockabye.
    Silence vs The X Factor

Rage Against The Machine’s No1 win in 2009 inspired another push to knock The X Factor off the top slot one year later.
Musicians including Pete Doherty, The Kooks, Billy Bragg, and Imogen Heap united under the name Cage Against The Machine for an unusual entry.
They pushed for John Cage track 4’33” – a completely silent song that lasts 4 minutes 33 seconds – to reach the top of the charts.
Video footage showed the musicians gathered in a studio to “re-record” the noteless song and “make December 25 ‘a silent night’”.
The release reached No21 in the UK charts. It was beaten by X Factor winner Matt Cardle with When We Collide.
    George Michael vs George Michael
George Michael ‘battled himself’ in the 1984 festive chart raceCredit: Alamy
In an unlikely moment, George Michael appeared to be battling against himself for a Yuletide chart-topper in 1984.
Two songs he featured on – Wham’s Last Christmas and Do They Know It’s Christmas by supergroup Band Aid – both chased the No1 spot.
But in a sweet gesture, George urged fans to “go out and buy Band Aid instead” to help the charity single to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia.
Band Aid producer Midge Ure revealed: “He was quite prepared to leave behind his own success for Band Aid to do its thing.”
The charity single sold one million copies in its first week. In an additional generous move, George donated money made from Last Christmas to the Band Aid fund.
    Slade vs Wizzard

Wizzard and their rivals were involved in a custard pie fight on Top of the PopsCredit: YouTube
They are two of the most popular Christmas songs of all time – yet only one of them has claimed the No1 spot.
Both Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody and Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday were released in 1973.
It was Noddy Holder and the gang who would be the winners that year but Wizzard, who came fourth in the charts, got sweet revenge shortly after news of their loss was announced.
Slade’s Dave Hill told The Guardian: “The friendly rivalry erupted in a custard pie fight on Top Of The Pops.
“We pied Roy [Wood] on camera – he carried on singing with custard in his beard. Then, when we were on, one of the Wizzard guys put one right in Noddy’s face.”
This week Roy, Wizzard’s frontman, told The Sun a track release “delay” gave Slade the upperhand.
He says: “Who knows what might have happened had we released the songs at the same time? We both had good followings and either of us could have made number one.”
Sadly for Wizzard, the song has never reached any higher than No 4 despite being rereleased multiple times.
Mike Flowers Pops vs Michael Jackson

The lead singers of The Mike Flowers Pops band surprisingly ended up “getting hate mail” from Oasis and Michael Jackson fans after his Christmas No1 entry in 1995.
The singer released a cover of Oasis song Wonderwall, which DJ Chris Evans jokingly said was the “long-lost original” – much to the annoyance of fans of the Britpop band.
It was also up against Jackson’s Earth Song that year, which Mikey said had “a lot of money behind it” unlike his hit.
He recalled: “As the battle for No1 hotted up, I started getting hate mail from Oasis fans and Jacko fans. Someone called me the antichrist.

“Keeping Jackson off the top would have been very funny. But in the end, I was almost relieved that we finished No2.”
Michael Jackson’s track won that year and amusingly Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher later said Mikey’s cover “bought me a new swimming pool”. More

This weekend, they joined pals and Noel’s daughter Anais for a night out in Paris after he performed with his band High Flying Birds.
The 1996 Oasis classic includes the line “So Sally can wait” — although he said at the time: “I don’t actually know anybody called Sally.
“It’s just a word that fit.”
Last night, a source told The Sun: “Noel has been enjoying the single life but has found something a bit more serious with Sally — and obviously people have quickly made the connection with the name.

“He’s been through a lot in the last year or so with a divorce, which got pretty ugly, but he’s enjoying hanging out with someone new and it seems to be going well.
“Obviously, introducing her to Anais is a pretty big deal and they seem to get on well, so it could well turn into something more significant.
“Sally is very talented and successful in her own right.
“She works with David Beckham and lots of other big names including Hollywood actors.”

The Sun revealed on Saturday that Noel, 56, had finally settled his acrimonious separation from music publicist Sara McDonald after 11 years of marriage.
It came after we told in January their relationship had broken down at the end of 2022.
Noel has since spoken about how writing his latest album helped him to “come to terms” with the break-up, which friends said had seen them dealing with each other almost exclusively via lawyers.
He said: “Divorce is a long, drawn-out process, so it affects the mood of the album, for sure.

“When you’re an artist you write about what you know, and I don’t really have much to say about life in general, as I don’t really give a f*** about most things I see on the news.
“So when things happen in your life that you can articulate, I tend to jump on them, and it makes for better art and it helps you come to terms with it.”
The divorce also prompted renewed hopes of an Oasis reunion, as Sara’s turbulent relationship with Noel’s frontman brother Liam had become a huge obstacle.
Liam has gently hinted that there may have been fresh talks to end the feud, but Noel has repeatedly shot down the claims.
He said Liam should “get his people to call my people” but quipped he would not reunite the Manchester band for less than £100million.

The pair — who have two teenage sons together — only communicated through their lawyers towards the end.
Oasis legend Noel, worth around £80million, is expected to hand over the couple’s £8million mansion in Hampshire to Sara, who he started dating in 2001.
Experts say the music publicist could also get as much as £20million from his earnings during their time together in a deal struck at a hearing last month.
The couple both flew abroad to celebrate, with Don’t Look Back in Anger star Noel, 56, partying in Vegas with U2 and pals, and Sara, 52, joining friends in Ibiza.

Noel revealed recently he has been living in hotels since the split and is now house-hunting.
A source said: “Sara stayed in the house after they split and Noel moved out.
    “She’s expected to stay there.
“They’ve deliberately done things quietly and behind closed doors, avoiding any sort of public battle, and they’ve got the resources to do that.

“But it’ll be a huge relief to both of them to finally have a deal agreed.
“By the end they really just communicated via lawyers.
“But they both seemed to want to celebrate afterwards so it seems as though both sides are happy enough.
“They’ve both been determined to retain great relationships with their kids.”
Noel met Sara while still married to first wife Meg Mathews, mum to his daughter Anais.
    The couple divorced in 2001.
He and Sara eventually tied the knot in 2011 and have sons Donovan and Sonny.
However The Sun revealed in January how their marriage had broken down irreparably at the end of last year.
They confirmed the divorce proceedings, with a spokesman adding: “Noel and Sara will continue to look after their children who remain the priority.”
Noel, now on tour with his new band High Flying Birds, has since told how writing his latest album helped him to “come to terms” with the break-up.
He said: “Divorce is a long, drawn-out process, so it affects the mood of the album, for sure.

Rock icon Noel Gallagher reveals reason why adoring fans are disappointed when they meet him

HIS hedonist antics in the Nineties saw Noel Gallagher partying for days on end in his Supernova Heights house, with his parties so wild that his cats Benson and Hedges had nervous breakdowns. But now the Oasis star has admitted he lives a far more respectable life — so much so that he reckons his fans are disappointed when they meet him.
Noel Gallagher has revealed the reason why adoring fans are disappointed when they meet himCredit: Getty
Noel explained: “I can go to the supermarket now and do a shop for the weekend and no one will bat an eyelid.
“I think people get a bit disappointed when they bump into you buying soup.
“They kind of don’t want you to inhabit the same supermarket queue as them as they think you’re on a private jet with hookers, which frankly, is where I should be.
“But I’m f***ing buying brown rice or salmon. I can sense the disappointment in them.

“I’ve been asked many times in the supermarket, ‘What’re you doing here?’
“I’m waiting for a taxi… what the f**k do you think I’m doing here.
“Just f***ing doing my own shopping.
“They go, ‘You do your own shopping?’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I had to fire my butler’ – which is another thing I should have.”
    Most read in Bizarre
It’s a far cry from Oasis’ heyday, when Noel let slip he used to bribe his fans into heading down to Waitrose because he couldn’t be bothered.
He added: “I can’t remember ever going to the shops in the Nineties.
“I used to get fans to go shopping for us.
“They would go, ‘Can I have a picture?’ and I’d give them a shopping list and go, ‘I’ll tell you what, if you go and get us that I’ll give you a picture and an autograph and a cuddle as well.’”
Noel is currently on tour with his band the High Flying Birds off the back of their latest record Council Skies, which was written during the breakdown of his 20-year relationship with his ex-wife Sara MacDonald.
Speaking during an interview in Australia, Noel said: “There was a lot of time spent at home, reflecting, and my family didn’t really react that well to lockdown.
“So there’s certain songs, and sections of songs, that are very personal.
“I think as an artist you’re looking for something to write about from a place of truth.

Liam, 51, a solo artist following Oasis’s break-up in 2009, this week announced: “I’m bouncing around the house to announce the Definitely Maybe tour.
“The most important album of the Nineties, bar none.
“I wouldn’t be anywhere without it and neither would you, so let’s celebrate together.”

Blur performed their biggest hits from that era, including Parklife and Song 2, at Wembley Stadium in July.
In 2024 other idols from that time will be touring, including Happy Mondays, who will be joined by Inspiral Carpets and Stereo MCs for some of their shows.
Nineties girl and boy bands are also back in vogue.
Last month Sugababes, who formed in 1998, returned to the charts with their single When The Rain Comes, and Nineties legends Take That made it to No3 with their hit Windows.
Both trios will be touring next year, while kids’ faves S Club 7 are currently hitting the UK’s arenas.
    TOYS
JUST three decades ago it wasn’t smartphones that had kids ignoring their parents but the latest toy fads instead.
And two of the biggest of the Nineties were the cute robot Furbies, right, and virtual pet Tamagotchi.

Each provided feedback to their owners, according to how much they were played with.
Both are now back, with Furbies among John Lewis’s top ten most desired Christmas toys and Tamagotchi enjoying a 123 per cent increase in sales.
John Lewis toy buyer Alan Wright said: “Nostalgia is set to take over this Christmas, with toys from the Nineties making a resurgence.”
Among other returning toys are Polly Pocket and fast-response game Bop-It!.
Psychologist Clay Routledge, who specialises in nostalgia, said: “Reminiscing about the Nineties is comforting because it gives us connection to times in our lives when we felt more free, adventurous and connected to other people”.

The show, which turned regular favourites Wolf and Ace into small-screen heroes, is due for a reboot on BBC One this winter.
And there is also plenty of nostalgia for sitcoms from that period.
Kelsey Grammer has won great reviews for his revival of US sitcom Frasier, which is now streaming on Paramount+.
And US comedian Jerry Seinfeld last week hinted that his beloved Nineties show Seinfeld could also return.
The final episode in 1998 drew 76million viewers in the United States alone.
Both Sex And The City and The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air have enjoyed revivals with spin-offs in the past couple of years.
And Just Like That . . .  brings back Carrie Bradshaw and Co, while Bel-Air sees Jabari Banks playing a teenage Will Smith.

THE latest phone fad is a handset that you can flip open then pretend you are talking to Captain Kirk in Star Trek.
There is a big range of flip-phones on sale, from Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5, which can cost more than £1,000, to “non-smart” Nokias for around £65.

For many of the so-called “dumb phones”, it’s a selling point that you can only make calls, text and take photos.
Gen Z are flaunting the basic devices on TikTok, even though you can’t access social media sites from them.
There is also a fascination with Nineties-style game consoles, with a firm called Analogue developing a device reportedly similar to the Nintendo 64.
Meanwhile, homeowners have seen the Nineties neon light, after more than a decade of grey interiors.
The latest decor trends take inspiration from that era, with brightly coloured neon lights, inflatable furniture and fluffy toilet seats, as well as flamboyant designs such as leopard lamps and zebra cushions.
Think of the riotous style mixes of C4’s The Big Breakfast, where Paula Yates interviewed Michael Hutchence in 1994 on an animal-print bedspread in front of a pink headboard.
Also hot are wicker chairs, doilies, canopy beds, flowery wallpaper and slip covers for furniture.
    FASHION
FROM the new Beckham doc to TikTok, fashion has gone nuts for the Nineties, writes Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend.
This month Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, 19, is in Glamour magazine looking every inch the Nineties pop star, complete with old-school rimless glasses, butterfly clips and double denim.

And Millie, 19, is not the only teen to get into throwback mode – Gen Z loves Nineties nostalgia, viewing videos of the #90sfashion more than 1.6billion times.
For those of us who experienced it the first time around, the look is everything that would make you shudder. Think low-rise jeans, boob tubes and bucket hats.
Model and Nineties baby Emily Ratajkowski is one of many stars who is a fan of the era, often hitting the streets of New York in combat trousers, a crop top and even Timberland boots.
Singer Dua Lipa mixes two Nineties trends – oversized and cargo trousers, on a dressed-down look, but she is never too far from rhinestones, which is also a huge nod to the era.
Kendal Jenner is another Nineties fan, with outfits that are stylishly minimal such as this vest top and silk skirt.
Hailey Bieber, 26, embodies all things Nineties in all her outfits, whether it’s a boob tube and micro sunglasses or her messy bob haircut.
Actress-turned-director Olivia Wilde, 39, favours dungarees – a look that’s firmly associated with Nineties girl band B*Witched.
And it’s not just women – blokes are being inspired by Nineties pop culture too.
Taylor Swift’s new beau, Travis Kelce, has been seen hand in hand with the singer wearing a cream co-ord, which prompted fans to liken him to a member of boyband NSYNC.
Other A-list men, such as Jack Grealish and Justin Bieber, also look like they’ve just stepped off the cover of Smash Hits mag, in puffer jackets, retro Umbro football shirts and cargo trousers.

As someone who grew up in the Nineties I’ll be avoiding certain horrifying trends – I don’t think I can ever put on a skelt (that’s a skirt the size of a belt) again.
But if throwback clothes make us recall the days of Britpop, British rom-coms and when we didn’t feel the need to share a picture of our breakfast, then I’m all for it.
