Glastonbury failed fans like me without huge rock acts – we need The Rolling Stones to make it great again

By Simon Cosyns, Deputy EditorA few weeks before Glastonbury 2008, I was asked to meet festival founder Michael Eavis for a “crisis” meeting. We sat in a veggie restaurant somewhere in London, mulling over the huge backlash against the upcoming headline appearance of superstar rapper Jay-Z.If the Rolling Stones weren’t touring America in June and Mick Jagger had agreed to strut his way across the Pyramid Stage, it’s all anyone would be talking aboutCredit: GettyRapper Jay-Z appearing at the festival in 2008Credit: GettyNoel Gallagher has said the festival was ‘built on a tradition of guitar music’Credit: GettyThe furore was fuelled by Noel Gallagher, brash but much-loved Epiphone-toting Oasis loudmouth, who had said the festival was “built on a tradition of guitar music”.“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” he added. “Sorry, but Jay-Z?”I remember saying to Eavis and daughter Emily that if they had 99 problems, Jay-Z wasn’t one, that his signing was genius and that The Sun would wholeheartedly back the rapper’s appearance.READ MORE ON GLASTONBURYThankfully, he was an unqualified triumph, famously opening his set with a montage of people hating on him, including Noel, and performing a sublime cover of Wonderwall to bring the house down and turn the “crisis” on its head.My point is that I’m open to Glastonbury moving with the times, drawing on popular music’s ceaseless shifts in trends and its wonderful diversity.Dua Lipa is a fabulous pop star, Shania Twain is a country diamond and SZA is R&B heaven. But, when it comes to the 2024 line-up and without wishing to sound like a “male, pale, and stale” old fart, I’m also mindful of Noel’s stance. Most read in BizarreAs Joan Jett once sang, I love rock and roll… and would love to think that it had a more prominent place among the myriad acts that make Glasto the greatest music festival on earth. Put it this way, say the Rolling Stones weren’t touring America in June and Mick Jagger had agreed to strut and shimmy his way across the Pyramid Stage, it’s all anyone would be talking about.Furthermore, there’s no Springsteen, AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam or Metallica on the bill. No Macca or Elton because they’ve just done it. And no chance of a reunion by Led Zepplin or Pink Floyd. As for Britpop, Blur had their moment at Wembley last year. Noel and Liam still need to kiss and make up (perish the thought). So we’re left with Glasto stalwarts Coldplay, God bless ‘em, who, under Chris Martin’s guidance, will do a lovely, phone-lights-in-the-air show. But they simply haven’t got riffs at their disposal like the monsters that usher in Satisfaction, or Highway To Hell .On the plus side, because Glastonbury is so huge and diverse, there’s rock gold to be found in them there Somerset pastures. Idles, The National, The Breeders and two lots of Irish rabble rousers, Fontaines DC and The Mary Wallopers, among them. But to borrow from Led Zep, let’s hope it won’t be a long lonely lonely time before the Pyramid Stage rocks and rolls again.MOVE OVER, OLD FARTS, AND LET THE YOUNG STARS SHINEBy Howell Davies, Associate Bizarre Editor
Glastonbury is finally moving with the times, and it’s great to see.
Yes, there will be old farts complaining that it was better in their day. What’s new there?
Really, this is the music that people are listening to in 2024.
I’ve been to the festival every year since 2015 and I’m bored of seeing the same crusty old white men as headliners. This twist is refreshing for a pop fan like me.
Of course there is a place for everyone, but old acts have dominated the line-up for years. And after a backlash over 2023’s all-male headliners, I love that there’s such a diverse roster.
Dua Lipa is Britain’s biggest superstar in years, making waves around the world. Coldplay are one of the most successful bands of the 21st Century, with phenomenal stage shows.
SZA had one of the most-played albums of 2023 with SOS – and has an incredibly exciting future.
And in the legends slot, Shania Twain – who has the biggest-selling album of all time by a female artist with Come On Over – will have punters of every age singing along to her hits. No one talked about Guns N’ Roses when they headlined last year, but Stormzy’s debut headline set in 2019 felt historic.
I’m sure some people will be disappointed that veteran acts like the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder aren’t topping the bill.
But we have to give younger stars the chance to headline now.
If not, when the “classic” Glasto headliners are all dead and buried, who will fill those slots as music legends and icons? More

Furious AC/DC fans slam high ticket prices as rockers join host of acts turning gig-goers off stadium shows

THEY’VE been electrifying rock fans with their high voltage riffs for 50 years. But for some die-hard AC/DC supporters, the ticketing costs for their upcoming stadium gigs have been a big turn off.AC/DC’s tour ticket prices have left some fans fumingCredit: GettyPearl Jam have also come under fire for expensive ticketsCredit: GettyMain standing tickets for the band’s Wembley show on July 3 are currently setting fans back £302.85 on Ticketmaster, while official platinum tickets are an eye-watering £381.80.The site says: “The Event Organiser has priced these tickets according to their market value. Tickets do not include VIP packages. Availability and pricing are subject to change.”Evidently, there are still many thousands out there with pockets deep enough to afford the pricey entry fees as both dates are almost sold out, but the price hikes in recent years are spiralling out of control. One fan complained: “Ticket price inflation is insane, way beyond anything else I can think of. I get that records aren’t selling any more and this is the way that bands make money but I’ve been feeling the need to draw the line for a few years now, this is the time I’ve finally done it, I’m not prepared to pay these prices any longer.”READ MORE ON MUSICAnother joked: “In other news anyone want to buy a kidney so I can see ACDC.”A third was more serious with their criticism of the pricing, writing: “s*****g on people’s dreams. The place you no longer go to get tickets that won’t cost you an arm and leg. Where selling a kidney won’t even get you a standing ticket.”The band, who is down to one original member in lead guitarist Angus Young, consists of longtime frontman Brian Johnson, Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney, drummer Matt Laug and rhythm guitarist Stevie Young. They played their first live show with Johnson in seven years at the epic Power Trip festival in the US back in October. Most read in ShowbizIt came after the Geordie singer overcame hearing issues that sidelined him for a previous tour that saw Guns ‘n’ Roses frontman Axl Rose take over mic duties.AC/DC are by no means the only major act being called out over inflated ticket prices.Bruce Springsteen rocks the RDS in Dublin as fans wowed by The Boss Pearl Jam have faced similar backlash over their Dark Matter tour which is seeing them play Tottenham Hotspur’s Stadium in June. For the best standing tickets at that show, punters need to fork out £249.45 while even the worst seats are £125 before booking fees are added. One fan raged: “F*****g gutted at the Pearl Jam ticket prices. I was really hoping to see them at last! £150 for nosebleeds. S***e.”Standing tickets for Pearl Jam in Manchester are 225 quid each!!! Absolutely outrageous. Ticket prices are out of control now.””I’d love to hear the rationale behind these prices. I love Pearl Jam but absolutely will not pay nearly £400 for 2 gig tickets. Then it’ll be travel from Scotland, accommodation, food and drinks. Mental, and an absolute p**s take.”The irony with Pearl Jam’s pricing is the band famously went to war with Ticketmaster in the 90s over its service charges.A motion was even put forward by House Democrats dubbed The Pearl Jam bill to introduce legislation to make the charges more transparent, though it ultimately died amid fears lawyers wouldn’t be able to substantiate their arguments. In 2022 Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen, another past critic of Ticketmaster, was slammed as ticket prices for his tour soared. Some exchanged hands for more than £4,000, despite the introduction of a ‘dynamic pricing system’ which intended to limit price hikes by allowing costing to fluctuate through complex algorithms. The blue collar musician is bringing his show back this summer with his E Street Band and prices are far removed from his humble origins.Official platinum tickets are still selling for between £259 and £433 at his Cardiff show at the Principality Stadium.Punk rockers Green Day’s ticket costs have also exploded. The last remaining tickets for their Wembley Stadium show in June cost £439.90While things are marginally better at their Emirates Old Trafford gig with bronze package tickets available for £199.It’s not just legendary rockers with inflated ticket prices either. Pop royalty Adele, who recently announced a Munich residency in the summer, has priced some tickets for those shows at more than £315.While Kylie Minogue and Shania Twain’s BST shows at London’s Hyde Park start from £112 for standard entry, before going up to £220 for the gold circle at the front of the pop-up setting and all the way up to £435 for the most exclusive packages. And it’s likely to continue to be the norm, should fans keep putting their hands into their pockets to meet the ever-rising costs.READ MORE SUN STORIESBruce Springsteen’s 2022 tour saw some tickets sell for eye-watering pricesCredit: APAdele’s Munich residency is looking to be a costly affair for fansCredit: Getty More

Noel Gallagher splurged £10k a week living in 5-star hotel while penning Council Skies album

HE prides himself on his working-class roots but Noel Gallagher’s recent boasts about his posh-boy lifestyle have hit a bum note. The former Oasis frontman has admitted he spent four nights a week living in a £4,000-a-night suite in swish London hotel Claridge’s last year while promoting latest album Council Skies.

And while Noel said the collection is actually inspired by the colour of a paint used by artist Pete McKee, he is being mocked for forgetting his humble Manchester roots.
A source said: “Noel makes out he’s a man of the people but really he’s sitting on millions of pounds.
“People who knew him back in the day couldn’t believe it when he was boasting about being holed up in Claridge’s while he was busy promoting Council Skies with the High Flying Birds.
“They’ve even nicknamed him Council Pies, which is a bit of a jibe at his weight, but it’s given everyone a good laugh.

“Noel has a £10million house in Hampshire, plus an £8million new pad in London which he has just had totally done up.
“The man is absolutely loaded. He wouldn’t remember what being a council estate-raised lad is all about now.”
I’m sure Noel’s loudmouth brother Liam will have something to say about this too.
    ‘Proper good times’
But given Council Skies landed at No2 when he released it last summer, only just missing out on the top spot, I think Noel is going to have the last laugh.

Noel made the boasts about his fancy lifestyle on his Patreon podcast with his mate, comedian Matt Morgan, this week.
He said of his stay at the five-star gaff: “I had some proper f**king good times there. It was a proper good time. I lived there for most of last year, I was there three or four nights a week.
“We’re now at my new place in London. It’s a ten-minute f***ing walk from the West End.
