Duane Eddy dead – Legendary guitarist dubbed ‘King of Twang’ dies aged 86 after heartbreaking cancer battle

LEGENDARY guitarist Duane Eddy has died at the age of 86 after inspiring artists including George Harrison with his distinctive style. The American musician was dubbed the King of Twang thanks to his reverberating electric sound on instrumentals such as Rebel Rouser and Peter Gunn.Duane Eddy, pictured in London in 1975, has died aged 86Credit: News Group Newspapers LtdEddy pictured at the Music City Walk of Fame Ceremony, Nashville, Tennessee in October 2023Credit: RexEddy was credited with putting the twang in early rock’n’roll and influenced stars such as late Beatles guitarist Harrison and Bruce Springsteen.Grammy-winning Eddy sold more than 100 million records worldwide – enjoying a string of instrumental hits in the 1950s and 1960s.After notching up 16 top 40 singles between 1958 and 1963, Eddy returned to charts in 1986 with a remake of his song Peter Gunn. His mastering of a unique twang on the guitar coupled with backing hollers and hand claps drew attention from aspiring artists.More showbiz newsEddy started playing guitar at the age of five, and was self taught. He and producer Lee Hazlewood later established the twang sound after realising the instrument’s lower strings sounded better on tape than its high ones.Speaking in 1986, he told the Associated Press: “I had a distinctive sound that people could recognize and I stuck pretty much with that.”I’m not one of the best technical players by any means; I just sell the best. Most read in Music”A lot of guys are more skillful than I am with the guitar. A lot of it is over my head. “But some of it is not what I want to hear out of the guitar.”Eddy’s inspiration could be heard in the music of artists who followed, including that of George Harrison who brought in a slow twang on Beatles hit Day Tripper.Hazlewood meanwhile later adapted the twang sound for his production of Nancy Sinatra’s 1960s smash hit These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.Eddy died surrounded by his family at Williamson Health hospital in Franklin, Tennessee, on Tuesday after a battle with cancer.A representative said: “Duane inspired a generation of guitarists the world over with his unmistakeable signature ‘Twang’ sound. “He was the first rock and roll guitar god, a truly humble and incredible human being. “He will be sorely missed.” More

Singing Bat Out of Hell for Children In Need
In 2010, Dave and Si performed a rendition of the Meat Loaf track for charity.
Wearing black and white suits as well as dirty white aprons, they sang Bat Out Of Hell in a café to raise funds for Children In Need.
    Making an entrance
Renowned for their love for motorbikes, the duo frequently made memorable entrances onto the sets of TV studios by riding in.
In 2016, they delighted the then-hosts of This Morning, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, by surprising them with bikes in the studio hallway.
Afterwards, they casually left their helmets and jackets scattered around the sofa of the ITV daytime programme.
    Murder on the dance floor
During his stint on Strictly Come Dancing in 2013, Dave performed a cha-cha routine to the Maroon 5 song Moves Like Jagger.
Sporting a flamboyant silver shirt, he executed exaggerated moves and even playfully dragged professional dancer Karen Hauer along the dance floor by her leg.
His energetic performances left a lasting impression, with then-judge Bruno Tonioli commending him for his entertainment value.
However, Dave’s journey on the show was cut short when he was eliminated midway through the series while dancing a tango to I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers.
All locked up with nowhere to go
During an episode of the BBC comedy panel show Would I Lie To You?, Dave disclosed an anecdote about being inadvertently trapped inside a merchant bank while working as a security guard at the age of 22.
He apparently found himself locked inside the bank from Christmas Eve until Boxing Day evening in 1980 due to a lack of relief staff and not being provided with the keys to exit the premises.
    Just desserts
During their appearance on the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen, Dave and Si encountered difficulty removing a fruit pudding from its dish.
Despite Dave’s attempts to dislodge it by slamming the bowl on the table and Si stepping in to assist, the pudding emerged from the dish in a collapsed state.
In jest, Dave quipped: “Generally it just relaxes, a bit like when my wife takes her Spanx off.”
They attempted to salvage the situation by adorning the pudding with berries and herbs for decoration.

“Personally, I am not sure I can put into words on how I feel at the moment.”My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow.”I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime.”It comes as a recipe book penned by the Hairy Bikers has shot to the top of the charts. The Hairy Dieters’ Fast & Fresh was only published on Thursday but is already number one in Amazon’s book chart.READ MORE SUN STORIESThe book has “easy-to-prep, low-calorie meals” inspired by the Mediterranean.Papers also revealed Dave left a £1.4million windfall to widow Liliana, naming her the sole shareholder of his firm.Si was joined outside a café in London by NicoleCredit: MJ-Pictures.comThe celebrity chef was also spotted greeting fans and posing for selfiesCredit: MJ-Pictures.comThe 57-year-old cut a casual figure in double denim wearing jeans and a jacketCredit: MJ-Pictures.comThe pair then headed to the train stationCredit: MJ-Pictures.com More
