Spencer Matthews admits he ‘could have died’ while battling problem drinking as he gives major update on being sober

SPENCER Matthews says he “could have died” if he hadn’t taken back control of his problem drinking.

The dad of three admitted his “excessive daily drinking” threatened his relationship with his wife Vogue Williams.

At his worst, Spencer would have a bottle of whiskey a day or up to ten pints.

Speaking on the podcast Boots presents Taboo Talk, which launches today, Spencer told host Vogue: “It’s not like I just fancied giving up drinking. I could have lost you, I could have lost work, I could have died – not to be overly dramatic about it, but that’s the way it was heading.”

Spencer says his marriage to Vogue helped him to “break the habit of abusive drinking” – and is now able to drink in moderation when he wants to.

“I feel very fortunate to have found that level of balance”, he added.

“Before, having one glass would have turned into ten and then I’d be out all night.

“I’m sober most of the time now. I’ve gone from problem-drinking on a daily basis to having a drink if I feel like it very irregularly.

“I no longer see it as a problem. I have great balance in my life.”

Spencer says he began to drink excessively when he was working as a city trader and then as a reality TV star in Made In Chelsea when he was “was bored and unambitious”.

He said: “I had a moment of clarity when I was drinking on my own at night if Vogue wasn’t around. All of a sudden I was going to bed drunk.

“One night, when I was alone, I had a bottle of whiskey and struggled to get myself to bed. I was hammered drunk. I remember waking up the next day and thought ‘I don’t need this in my life’.

“If I wasn’t married to someone who didn’t have a great relationship with alcohol, as in you don’t really like it, then my journey would have been more difficult.”

Spencer met Vogue while competing on Channel 4’s reality TV show The Jump in 2017.

They married the following year and now have three children together.

Vogue is the host of Boots presents Taboo Talk, which delves into a wide range of often tabooed topics – such as living with diabetes, self-pleasure and being neurodivergent – alongside insights from top celebrities about their own experiences.

The sixth season kicks off with the first episode ‘Sober curious’, with celebrity guests Spencer, Scott Thomas, and Millie Gooch providing insights into their booze-free lives.

The trio open up about their own experiences with drinking, including their takes on their personal low points.
