Back To Black branded ‘evil and morally wrong’ with ‘acting worse than Hollyoaks’ by Amy Winehouse fans

BACK To Black has been branded “evil and morally wrong” by Amy Winehouse fans – who think the acting is “worse than Hollyoaks”.

Actress Marisa Abela, 27, known for her role in hit BBC Two and HBO series Industry, portrays troubled Amy as the film charts her rise from her early days in Camden, North London, to global superstar.

Skins star Jack O’Connell, 33, plays her former husband Blake Fielder-Civil as the movie depicts their tumultuous relationship.

But the film has divided the soul singer’s fans and friends since it was announced.

It has drawn criticism for “ghoulish” depictions of her drink and drug addiction leading up to her death in 2011 at the age of 27.

Following its world premiere in London’s Leicester Square, fans have taken to X, formerly Twitter, to share their rage.

One fumed, “Oh is the back to black social embargo up? evil film!!!! morally repugnant!! not even bad in a way that is interesting or entertaining, just sad and anger-inducing from start to finish!!!”

Another added, “The back to black movie is the most disrespectful and disgusting way they could’ve paid tribute to amy winehouse fr.”

Someone else agreed, “I feel like Amy Winehouse would’ve hated a movie being made about her life, but to also make it a GCSE drama style performance is just disrespectful.”

A fourth asked, “The videos from the amy winehouse film premiere are very evil, why was this film made may I ask?”

One more concluded, “I didn’t think BACK TO BLACK was very good – a dry, Hollyoaks-esque biopic that squanders the opportunity to champion Amy’s profound talent, instead focussing, somewhat voyeuristically, on the tumult of her relationship.

“But Marisa Abela is far and away the best thing about it.”

Jack eas forced to defend the project at Monday’s event, saying everyone was determined to do Amy and her memory justice.

One of the producers, Alison Owen, added: “People who die young become overly defined by that death rather than their life.

“Amy was fragile in some ways but she was also strong. She was not a candle in the wind, she was a blowtorch.”

Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, Back To Black is set for a UK release on Friday.
