Who was Joan Savage and was she married?

JOAN Savage had roles in Coronation Street and Dad’s Army in a career spanning six decades.

The actress has sadly passed aged aged 89 — here we take a look at her life, career, husband and children.

Who was Joan Savage?

Joan Savage was born on January 1934 in Blackpool, Lancashire, England.

As a youngster she accompanied her comedian father Norman around the club circuit in the north of England.

Savage joined the Blackpool Children’s Tower Ballet and Blackpool Tower Circus at the age of 12.

She rode elephants, roller skated and performed songs across a wide variety of performances, paving the way for an appearance on Mr Ronnie Taylor’s Variety Fanfare on BBC Radio.

Joan went on tour as the leading lady in a George and Alfred Black entertainment show named Music and Madness, according to The Blackpool Gazette.

She was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in 2008.

The actress is understood to have died peacefully at Brinsworth House retirement home in Twickenham, south west London earlier this month.

Was Joan Savage married and did she have any children?

During the Music and Madness tour Joan met fellow performer Ken Morris, whom she would later marry in Blackpool in 1955.

The couple later established a successful double act, appearing in a number of TV adverts and shows including The Jack Jackson Show and The Black and White Minstrel Show.

They had a daughter named Kelly in March 1960.

Her first husband Ken sadly passed away in July 1969 following a brain tumour diagnosis.

She went on to marry Bryan in November 1972 and is survived by daughter Kelly and grandsons Mark and Simon.

Paying tribute, her daughter Kelly said: “Mum always used to say ‘I’d like to go with my tap shoes on,’ so the last few years have been extremely difficult for her and us as a family.

“I hope she’s reunited with her show biz contemporaries and putting on a show up there.”

What TV shows was Joan Savage in?

Joan appeared in 12 episodes of The Arthur Haynes Show between 1956 and 1962.

Savage played dancer Celeste Pickersgill during a brief stint in Coronation Street in 2000 — she was partnered with Norris Cole during a competition hosted at the Tower Ballroom.

Joan also appeared in an episode of Dad’s Army in 1972, two episodes of Come Back, Lucy in 1978, and featured in The Arthur Haynes Show over a seven-year period.

She made more than 350 appearances on a great many TV shows in a glittering career.
