7 Steps To Create a Marketing Plan That Actually Works

Build it and they will come. It’s a well-meaning sentiment. But when it comes to running your own business, it misses the mark a bit.
As you already know, you can’t simply set up shop and cross your fingers that people find you. Instead, being a successful business owner means constantly marketing and promoting your business in hopes of getting more eyeballs on your product or bodies through the door.
But, the words “marketing plan” are enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine. It sounds overly technical and completely daunting, doesn’t it? However, I assure you, it isn’t as intimidating as you might think it is—and you definitely don’t need to have a degree in marketing in order to figure it out.
Follow these seven simple steps, and you’ll be armed with a marketing plan that is sure to help you take your business to the next level!

    What is a marketing plan?
Before you can jump right in with creating your plan, it’s important to have a solid understanding of what exactly it is. Typically included as an expanded piece of your overall business plan, a marketing plan is just what it sounds like: a document that details everything you need to know in order to successfully promote your business.
Some large corporations have marketing plans that are hundreds of pages, whereas a small one-person business might only have a handful of pages. There’s no exact length for this sort of document, as long as you’ve included all of the necessary information.
Additionally, it’s important to note that your marketing plan should span one year. This is enough time to reach those big, long-term objectives, and short enough to remain flexible when your circumstances and goals change over time.
Now that you know the nuts and bolts, let’s dive into the details. Here are the steps you need to take in order to piece together the essential elements of your business’ marketing plan.

    Step 1: Know Your Business
You needed to do this exact same thing when working on your business plan, so this first step shouldn’t be too difficult. After all, nobody knows your business quite like you do.
Think of this section as your opportunity to provide a general overview of your current business operations, as well as your internal and external environment. How long have you been up and running? What’s your business structure? Are you an LLC or a partnership? Do you conduct business online or through a storefront? What sorts of products and services do you offer?
Within this section, some companies also choose to do a SWOT analysis—which details your strengths and weaknesses as an organization, as well as any opportunities for growth, and threats that could hinder that progress. It’s a great way to get a snapshot of your current situation in a way that’s helpful and completely manageable.

    Step 2: Determine Target Market
“Target market” is likely a phrase you heard repeated in any sort of marketing class you ever took or article you’ve read. And, for good reason—it’s a key element for coming up with effective and successful marketing strategies.
In this portion of your marketing plan, you should list anything and everything you know about your ideal customer. This includes basic demographic information, such as gender and age. But you should also dig deeper into their behaviors and decisions.
Why do they buy from you? What challenge or pain point are you solving for them? How do they spend their free time? What outlets do they turn to to get information? Gather any intel you can find, and include it in this section. Knowing your customer inside and out will be helpful when identifying marketing tactics and strategies.

    Step 3: Analyze Competitors
Wouldn’t it be nice if you operated in a vacuum and never had to worry about any competitors infringing on your space or stealing your customers? Unfortunately, business doesn’t work that way. Chances are, there are already companies out there doing something incredibly similar to you—meaning you’ll need to work that much harder to stand out.
Don’t get intimidated! This is something every business owner deals with. So being armed with all sorts of knowledge about your competitors will be helpful in finding ways to differentiate yourself from the crowd.
Start by describing—in detail—the product or service you offer to consumers. This is your chance to expand on the basic overview you provided in the first section. Then, spell out how your product or service measures up to the existing competition. What positions you as the one source clients or customers should turn to? What makes you different? As you might imagine, you’ll be able to leverage this differentiator to effectively market your business.
Taking a magnifying glass to your competitors can be disheartening—particularly if they’re really thriving. But it’s an important step to not only gather all of the information you need, but also to demonstrate to any potential investors that you’re aware of your competition and prepared to tackle that challenge head-on.

    Step 4: Set Goals
Here comes the fun part—spelling out your marketing-related goals for the year. What objectives do you want to accomplish? Are there specific targets you want to hit?
Depending on your current situation and ambitions, goals can range from lofty and grandiose (such as doubling sales or increasing market share) to smaller, more bite-sized ambitions (like getting 100 new Instagram followers on your brand’s account or starting a blog for your business).
The important part is to zone in on the milestones you want to reach throughout that year, whether it seems possible or not. Don’t cloud your mind with logistics just yet—this comes in the next step.

    Step 5: Outline Strategies
Now that you’ve outlined exactly what you want to accomplish, it’s time to detail the strategies you’ll use to actually reach these objectives.
I recommend taking each goal separately, and listing the related action items directly underneath it. This allows you to see exactly what needs to get done in order to push yourself toward that accomplishment. It’s also a great way to get a handle on whether or not this goal seems realistic or if needs a little adjusting. You want your goals to be motivating and far-reaching, but not so difficult that they’re just discouraging.
Let’s stick with the example of getting more followers on your business’ Instagram account. Here’s what this could look like:
Goal: Gain at least 100 new followers on Company XYZ’s Instagram account by December 31.
    Starting Number: 458
    Action Items:

Be more active in the space by posting at least three new photos every week.
Engage with users by responding to comments on photos as well as commenting on photos posted by similar, relevant accounts.
Research industry and community-related hashtags that we can utilize in our own posts to attract more organic traffic.
Host an Instagram contest for our followers.

See? It’s not nearly as complex as you think, but it still provides a tangible, helpful roadmap to set you on the right track to accomplish your goals.

    Step 6: Set a Budget
If you’re anything like me, this is the part you dread the most—the numbers. I’ve never been a math whiz, and just the word “budget” is enough to send me running for the hills. But, as you already know, it’s a necessary evil when it comes to running your business.
In your full-blown business plan, you detailed the entire financial side of your business. But in your marketing plan, stay focused strictly on marketing-related activities. How much do you plan to spend on marketing and promotion throughout the next year, and how much will the action items you listed above cost you? Most importantly, where will this money come from?
Budgets aren’t fun, but it’s important to be honest with yourself here. You’d rather discover you need to tweak or tailor something to make it affordable right now—rather than six months from now when you’ve already forked over your credit card!

    Step 7: Get to Work!
There you have it! These are the steps you need in order to create a marketing plan for your business—you just need to put them all together. As mentioned earlier, marketing plans vary from basic and simple to comprehensive and complex. And remember, as with everything else, it really depends on what’s best suited for your own business.
But regardless of whether you plan to end up with a document that’s two pages or 200, these steps should help to get you started! More

How I got my job as… Managing Director of a top Dubai-based media agency

Welcome to EW‘s weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and businesswomen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome. This week we chat with the Managing Director of JES Media, Claire Ferris-Lay, on how she has forged a successful career in media and public relations.Having been in Dubai for 14 years, she’s seen the industry continue to grow. Originally working as a journalist in the region, Ferris-Lay opted to go to the other side of the fence entering the world of PR. EW sat down with her to discuss her career, the media industry and what it was like moving to a new agency in the middle of a pandemic. What was your favourite subject at school?I always loved English literature and English language at school. I knew when I was at school, I wanted to write and tell stories. My school yearbook actually said I wanted to become the editor of Vogue – I think I had just watched a documentary on Anna Wintour and was fascinated about how the media industry worked. What was your first job?I got a job as soon as I able to – working in retail at the weekends and also for my family’s confectionary business. My summer holidays were spent working on the packing line in a factory. Standing on my feet all day and doing the same thing every few minutes really taught me the importance of finding a job that would fulfil me. My first job after university was working for the local newspaper. It was a small, 20-page weekly newspaper and for three days a week, I worked on reception and two days as a journalist. My editor was a real old school “hack” who was really tough on me but I learned so much. I really felt I had accomplished something when he left me in charge of editorial while he went on holiday for the first time. What inspired you to go into the media/PR industry? My mum says I was obsessed with carrying newspapers and fashion magazines as a child so I guess it stemmed from an early age. I decided to study journalism at London College of Printing as I wanted to study something a bit different. The course was a mix of theory (history, ideas and politics) and practical such as court reporting and editing the weekly newspaper, which really suited me.What eventually brought you to Dubai?I wanted sunshine and an adventure. Looking back, I was quite naive as I arrived with no job, very little money and knew even little about what I was doing. Fourteen years ago, it was pretty easy to walk into a job. The real estate sector was booming and journalism jobs were aplenty so I landed my first job within a few weeks.JES launched last year. What was it like setting up and moving to a new agency during the pandemic?I have been really fortunate to have worked with some amazing mentors and as such, my career has been quite organic, particularly after I made the decision to leave journalism and go into PR. Each mentor gave me a new opportunity, which I seized. After several years with FIVE Holdings, helping to set up their in-house marketing agency, I was offered the Managing Director at JES Media, a brand new agency. I believe in trusting your instinct and while I knew setting up an agency would be challenging, I also knew it was the right thing for my career and personal development. What are the key elements of your role?My work day is really varied as we have a mix of corporate and consumer clients across a range of disciplines from PR to media buying and social media. Networking and maintaining relationships remain really critical to my role, whether that’s managing our internal teams and regularly meeting our existing clients, to meeting with potential new clients.I also recently invested in a new Dubai-based swimwear brand called Filly and I am in the process of establishing a DJ school called DJ Like A Pro, which builds on my love of music. They are very much in their infancy but in both cases, I am fortunate to have great partners who manage the day to day operations while I chip in regularly with my ideas.Talk us through your daily routine. My life is busy and I find when I have the basics such as sleep, good food and exercise in place, I’m generally a happier, more balanced person! Most days, I start the day with a 10-minute daily meditation on the Calm app, which I usually combine with an LED Light Mask. Exercise is also really critical to me feeling good so I work out with a trainer a few times a week and also attend a morning class with my girlfriends. I then get ready for work listening to the BBC World Service podcast and then it’s whatever the day throws at me!What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps? It might sound simple but learn to trust your gut. I have ignored my inner voice on so many occasions over the years and I think it’s fair to say if something feels wrong, it probably isn’t right for you. What is the best piece of advice you ever received?Get comfortable with the uncomfortable. There will always be aspects of life that you really don’t like doing but if you learn to face them head-on, they don’t seem quite so daunting. And what is the worst?I believe in owning up to your mistakes and learning from them in the hope you don’t repeat them so even the worst advice counts for something. What has been the biggest challenge you had to overcome?I’ve had lots over the years but if we don’t face challenges, you don’t grow. What are your goals for 2021?I set my intentions at the beginning of every year loosely based on the wheel of life. I was given a copy of it years ago and it essentially breaks down the key elements of your life. My annual goals are always based on; romance and intimacy, family and friends, money, health, physical environment, fun and recreation, career and life purpose, and spiritual alignment. I think it’s important to appreciate that having time for yourself as well as family and friends is just as important as money in the bank and fulfilment at work. For me, 2021 is very much about business growth as well as maintaining consistency in my personal wellbeing.– For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and InstagramImages: Supplied More

The Obé Fitness Classes Our Team Can’t Get Enough Of

When you find a good workout, you want to scream it from the rooftops. One that not only makes you feel strong and powerful but makes you feel accomplished and excited—it’s the gold standard of workouts. For some, it’s a long run. Others, it’s pilates. And for you, it might be dancing around your apartment to your favorite early 2010s hits (me). With Obé Fitness, our team’s #1 streaming fitness app, you don’t have to choose just one! You can try every workout under the sun and create an arsenal of your favorites. Our team has been using Obé for years, so we’re sharing our favorite classes. Whether it’s a one-hour full class or a guided stretch for after a run, we’ve got a whole host of favorites.

I’ve been taking this class every week for the last few months, and I’ve noticed the biggest difference in my strength and endurance than I have with any workout. Kat pushes me to work hard, but I don’t feel like I’m being screamed at by a trainer either. The moves are easy to modify to fit my needs, and I love that we start with lighter weights and go heavier throughout the class. If you take any Obé class recommendation, make it this—I am absolutely obsessed.

Obé is great for adding an extra 10-minute class here and there to your other workouts, and this is one I’ve been including lately when I want to add a class that won’t make me drip in sweat but will leave me sore AF. It is hard, but so worth it.

Ana is one of my favorite Obé instructors, and I’ve been loving her strength classes. She always does a full-body class, so I walk away feeling like I got a really good workout in only 28 minutes. I also love that she’s all about strength but adds a little cardio here and there to get my heart rate up. I like to take a strength class once or twice a week, and her energy has encouraged me to keep going.

I took one Pilates class in college and vowed to never do it again. Pilates is hard, y’all. But I love Obé because I can try a class once, and if I don’t like it, I’m not indebted to some package for the next month. I’m so glad I gave it another shot because I’ve been loving Mary’s Pilates class every week (I do them live on Mondays, and they’re the perfect way to start my week). It’s making me feel strong in places I never thought I would (ahem, core), and I can feel myself getting better at every move as time goes on. This class uses the barre ball, and it’s somehow so challenging and so fun.

I have a really hard time doing dance classes that aren’t to music I already know the words to, so I typically love to do them live because the instructors pick such good music. Peter is the exception. He makes every class so fun. I would take his class to elevator music and be joyful as hell. He has an energy that is unmatched, he always makes me laugh, and I leave his class extremely sweaty.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I would die for Peter T. He makes every workout so fun, it barely feels like working out (I hate when people say that, but with Peter, it’s true!). Laugh through 45 minutes of super fun choreography mixed with sculpting moves so you feel like you’re busting a move but also working those muscles. PS, the playlist is *fire sign emoji*.

When I’m in the mood for (or have time for) a longer workout, I never want to do a sweaty cardio sesh. 45 minutes of sweat and heavy breathing? No thank you. The sculpt classes are always my go-to because it just feels good to work each muscle group. They feel doable and enjoyable, but they still leave me feeling sore the next day. I love this class in particular because ankle weights are my jam and you work every single muscle in this 47-minute class.

For days where I only feel like doing a little something or want to add in extra abs, Pilates Abs is my absolute favorite. The targeted and specific workouts get to every layer of the core, and I swear I feel like I have a six-pack after 10 minutes (even if it doesn’t look that way, as long as it feels like it, right?). Plus, I bought one of these nifty little barre balls just for these classes and it was worth every penny (just ask my abs).

Listen, I love all of the yoga classes on Obé, but this one made it into my top five favorites because it got me to do something I never thought I would: boxing. The combo classes can help push you out of your comfort zone because it’s just something you know well (yoga sculpt) combined with a little bit of something you haven’t tried before (cardio boxing). Spoiler alert: I felt like a major badass. Take this class if you’ve always been curious about boxing but are not ready to go all in.

If you’re like me and would way rather be at a club with your friends than on your living room floor working out (but like, who wouldn’t?), this is the class for you. Thanks to fun movements and hype music, this class makes you feel like you’re having fun with your friends (ah, remember going out?) instead of fitting in a workout on your lunch break. Just be warned: you will break a sweat.

Confession time: I do not stretch. Ever. I will complain about my hamstrings and calves until the sun starts setting in the East, but I will not actually do anything about it. I know, I know, stretching is SO important, so I’m making a conscious effort to work more stretching into my routine. The Sculpt + Stretch classes have come to my muscles’ rescue. While the class incorporates sculpt moves, the focus is really on lengthening, mobility, and flexibility. So it’s a workout that feels almost like a rest day—which is honestly just perfect.

Obé’s Sculpt classes are a must-have in my weekly regimen. These 28-minute classes are incredibly challenging without taking too much time from the rest of my day. I have never been a person who looks forward to spending hours at the gym, but I can’t deny what a good workout can do for both my mind and body. I do these classes on days where my schedule is a bit more packed than usual or if I find myself with some restless energy on an off day. It’s amazing how much of a sweat I can work up after less than 30 minutes of work!

Sure, I could do some upper body weight lifting on my own, but beyond bicep curls and shoulder presses I would be at a loss for moves. I love to mix up the types of workouts I do throughout the week, and Obé’s Upper Body Strength classes focus on a part of my body I would otherwise neglect. I’m all about the abs, legs, and cardio workouts, so when I feel I need to give my arms and back a little love, I turn to this class.

I love incorporating weights into my workouts for a bit of extra challenge. However, I’m in no way an expert. Instead, I rely on classes to help me get the most out of my weight training. This Obé Strength class is only 28 minutes long and targets the full body; it’s much easier to psych myself up for a workout that will be over before I even realize it’s started. This class is deceptively difficult. I’m always sore the next day—a definitive sign my fast and easy workout was also effective.

Pilates is that sneaky workout that feels fine for the first half of the class and then in the final stretch, you can barely hold yourself up anymore. While I love using weights in my workouts, sometimes I just want something no-fuss. That’s where Pilates comes in. Though it may not look super challenging, don’t be fooled. The Obé Pilates classes are some of the most difficult classes in my routine. By the time the 27 minutes are up, I’m left sweating almost as much as I am after an intense cardio session.

When something has “mood booster” in the name, I’m absolutely sold. I work out to take care of my body, of course—but the effects on my mind are what I actually crave. This class (along with the rest of the Mood Booster program!) is a really fun way to break a sweat and also crack a big smile. (As Josie always says, Peter T. is the BEST!)

I’m a big fan of reformer pilates, and this class is the perfect at-home way to get a fix of that muscle-burning, ultra-toning feeling. I’m a huge fan of Katherine, who makes me feel confident and comfortable. I like to add a class like this on days when I want a tough workout but don’t want to max out my lung capacity.

I love a yoga class that makes me feel both energized AND relaxed—and I often think a full 50-60 minute-class is my favorite way to allow my body to do both. Additionally, this class’s cooldown segment focuses heavily on opening up the hips—which is great for fellow runners!

As a former Broadway star, Spencer J. is the master of dance cardio—and his infectious energy makes the time go SO fast. I love Spencer’s sculpt classes too, but there’s just something about dancing around my bedroom that makes me feel happy after a long day at my computer.

I like barre classes in theory—but I so often get bored when I’m not doing intense cardio. Barre cardio is a great way to combine important muscle conditioning with the fast-paced fun of cardio (any other cardio lovers out there!?). Also, 45 minutes is my ideal workout time–it’s the perfect length to get me to forget my day and get in the zone!

My primary workout is running, but in order to really succeed on runs, you have to incorporate strength training into your routine. Like many runners, I used to dread the days I did strength, but since I found this class I actually look forward to it. It’s tough and always makes me sore the next day, but Dorian makes the entirety of the class super fun and enjoyable.

I am arguably the least flexible person I have ever met in my entire life, and coupled with running, I have horribly tight hamstrings and my body suffers for it constantly. One of my resolutions this year was to take more time to stretch after my workouts, but I love doing this at night before I get ready for bed. It’s made a world of difference in how my body feels the next morning, and I’ve seen a huge difference in my flexibility since.

A couple of months ago on a rainy Sunday, I was feeling some cabin fever and just needed a way to move my body. I stumbled upon this class and it truly was some of the most fun I’ve had working out—ever. Dancing is not my strong suit by a long shot, so I laughed my way through it and got in a killer workout in the meantime. 10/10 mood booster.

In my aforementioned efforts to take better care of my body post-workout, I bought a foam roller earlier in the year, but found myself just rolling my back out and not knowing what else to do. I nearly fainted when I discovered Obé has a whole section full of foam rolling tutorials, and of all of the ones I’ve tried, this class completely changes how my legs feel in under 10 minutes. I make it a priority to do this a couple of times a week and it’s completely changed the game for me.

I’ve never been one to meditate, but after a few weeks of struggling to fall asleep this year, I started dabbling in Obé’s meditation section to see if the classes would help me wind down and dose off faster. This class is short enough for me to handle at only 12 minutes, but helps me to completely reset myself, forget about my day, and get ready for a good night’s sleep.
