Find out where Dubai’s millionaires live and why

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

With Dubai known for some of its most affluent districts, there’s most certainly no dearth of millionaires.
As a flamboyant destination with real estate wonders, the emirate always has new properties on the horizon, including existing penthouses, villas, lofts and more.
To delve deeper and recognise these prominent areas, a strategy consultancy company, Webster Pacific has identified these neighbourhoods according to an analysis of all the High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI) in each area.
According to the study, HNWIs are defined as those who’ve amassed a wealth of $1 million or more with Dubai’s total number of people in this category amounting to 67,900 as of June 2022.

The top residential areas as per the study include the following with its list of HNWIs.

    Jumeirah First – 8,685
    Al Barsha – 8,155
    Jumeirah – 7,202
    Arabian Ranches – 3,728
    Al Thanyah – 3,542
    Umm Suqeim – 2,960
    Nakhlat Jumeirah – 2,573
    Marsa Dubai – 2,537
    Al Satwa – 2,446
    Umm Al Sheif – 2,421

Jumeirah First has been ranked at the top of the list due to its suburban, upscale feel and close proximity to both sides of Dubai including the highly bustling downtown area. Barsha on the other hand comes second in the category due to an abundance of sophisticated schools such as King’s School Al Barsha and GEMS Dubai American Academy along with easy access to Galleria Mall.
The interactive map designed by the team showcases the concentration of HNWIs within a 5-minute drive from every location in the market and it can be seen here.

How Estée Lauder co-created the pink ribbon to raise breast cancer awareness

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

Estelle Letang, General Manager of the Middle East Region at The Estée Lauder Companies on how they are pioneering the visibility of breast cancer prevention.
What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine?
My morning routine usually starts with some form of exercise and Pilates is my favourite as it sets me up for the day. Working for a beauty company, I always take five minutes as ‘me time’ by applying me favourite beauty products including Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm from Clinique, then hydrating my skin with the Estèe Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum, proceeding with La Mer’s iconic Crème De La Mer to moisturise my skin, then using a lipstick from M.A.C and finally spritzing my favourite fragrance from Tom Ford, Rose Prick. As a mother of three, I’ve always had breakfast with my children before they head to school.
Can you tell us about the latest Estée Lauder Breast Cancer Campaign?
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign and the Company’s commitment to the global breast cancer movement. Through the collective efforts of employees, consumers, and partners worldwide, the campaign has facilitated real progress and driven social impact. In the Middle East, we have focused on raising much-needed awareness and education about breast cancer in the regional community by highlighting the stories of four inspirational women who survived breast cancer through a series of empowering videos and events. These survivors share their personal journeys with breast cancer, their journey of recovery and how they went to fulfill their dreams after they beat the disease. All of the survivors share the critical importance of self-examination and early detection which was a key factor in their recovery.
The late Evelyn H. Lauder launched the iconic Pink Ribbon, as part of The Breast Cancer Campaign, how did it all begin?
Thirty years ago, in 1992, Evelyn H. Lauder (Estée Laud- er’s daughter-in-law) co-created the globally recognised Pink Ribbon and launched The Estée Lauder Companies Breast Cancer Campaign, inspiring a global movement around its mission to help create a breast cancer-free world once for all. Since then, the Breast Cancer Campaign is The Estée Lauder Companies’ largest corporate philanthropic initiative. Just one year later, in 1993, Evelyn Lauder founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the campaign’s lead- ing non-profit organisation partner dedicated to advancing the world’s most promising research to eradicate breast cancer. The Company have funded more than $108 million globally for lifesaving research, education, and medical services. The campaign is a true testament to the group’s legacy as a beauty-inspired, values-driven company that places people, positive impact, and inclusivity at the heart of everything we do.
“The campaign is a true testament to the group’s legacy as a beauty-inspired, values-driven company that places people, positive impact, and inclusivity at the heart of everything we do.”
This month brings awareness to breast cancer – what are the key things we should be looking for?
Globally, breast cancer causes the greatest number of cancer-related deaths among women. Every 15 seconds somewhere in the world, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. This is far too many. A breast cancer diagnosis profoundly affects everyone it touches – patients, loved ones, doctors, caregivers, advocates and more. Our goal as a company is to generate widespread awareness and education across the Middle East region on breast cancer highlighting the importance of self-testing, early detection, and prevention.

What are some of the key initiatives Estée Lauder has taken to help people going through this journey?
The Estée Lauder Companies in the Middle East have worked very closely with NGO Brest Friends, the first breast cancer support group in Dubai, and Al Jalila Foundation for the last seven years, whose combined mission is similar to ours: To save lives by promoting early detection, increasing awareness, education, and offering support to patients with breast cancer.
This is The Pioneer Issue – what inspired the group to take the lead in raising awareness?
It has been 30 years since Evelyn H. Lauder, a visionary woman, inspired a global movement and introduced a symbol of hope and inspiration with one mission, to help create a breast-cancer-free world. At a time when breast cancer wasn’t spoken about openly, Evelyn H. Lauder saw an opportunity to unite people everywhere and make a difference. She said,“I’d like to be able to save lives.” Now, as we honour The Campaign’s 30th Anniversary, breast cancer patients are leading better, healthier lives due in part to early detection and improved treatment which the campaign and our partners are dedicated to advancing. The campaign is a cornerstone of who we are at The Estée Lauder Companies and serves as a true, authentic point of difference that drives our social impact and enhances our corporate reputation with a key call to action, It’s #TimeToEndBreast- Cancer. Together, we are united to help end breast cancer for all.

We All Have a Little Witch In Us—These Wellness Rituals Will Help Bring Out Yours

No doubt about it–fall is magical. The leaves change into all sorts of vibrant hues, the scent of cinnamon is everywhere you go, and the chill in the air bites in a way that almost feels personal. It’s a season that feels so alive, so it’s no wonder that fall is directly tied to mysticism. So much so that one of the key images of the season is a witch (Hocus Pocus, anyone?). Of course, with that title also comes dated stereotypes of what it means to be a witch: flying broomsticks, evil cauldrons, and a desire to eat children. But the true definition of a witch isn’t so easy to nail down.
Historically, witches, or people accused of being witches, have come in many different forms, but most of them were women, and they were far from monstrous. Rather, they were masters of wellness, specializing in herbalism, midwifery, and other healing practices. Modern women are turning these rituals more mainstream, finding deep connection to the earth and nature, and leaning into practices that enhance their quality of life. So if you really think about it, embodying your inner witch is in itself a wellness practice. Read on for some wellness rituals that witches throughout the ages have used and loved that will help amplify your health for fall and beyond.

    1. Be more intentional with essential oils
Scent is known to trigger both emotion and memory, so you can use scent to enhance your sense of self and impact the way you relate to the world around you. Instead of just the typical diffusing lavender oil to relax or sniffing peppermint oil for energy, DIY your own potions (see what I did there?) so you can tap into the kind of energy and emotion you associate with that scent at any time. Sniff or diffuse a wide range of essential oils (eucalyptus, lemon, etc.) and either see how the scent makes you feel or you can associate an affirmation to the smell.
To take it a step further, blend your own concoction by starting with a base like jojoba or extra virgin olive oil, and pour into a small vial with a roller ball for easier application. Add a few drops of the essential oil of your choice to the base (essential oil alone might be irritating for the skin, which is why you combine with another oil to dilute) to rub onto temples, wrists, or other pressure points when needed. Top off the vial with some flower petals or fresh herbs to enhance the smell while beautifying the blend. As with all rituals, remember that setting an intention for the practice will amplify its effects. Assign a word (like bravery, compassion, or confidence) to your potion and apply the oil to your skin whenever you need to be reminded of that intention.

    2. Update your bath routine
Baths have been important for both hygiene and ritual for centuries. Water has often been used not only to cleanse the body, but also your mind and energy. And when you’re intentional about supplementing your bath water with herbs, flowers, or crystals, you can amplify its healing properties. Forget boring bubble bath–there are countless combinations you can create when devising your bath ritual. I like basil or eucalyptus plants to relax muscles, lavender or chamomile to relax the mind, rose petals and basil for skin glow, or crystals like Rose quartz and Amethyst to clear out anxious energy and invite peace into your space.
I believe that if you’re drawn to a particular plant or crystal, your intuition is guiding you to use it for your benefit. But if you’re a researcher like me, feel free to hit the books (like here or here) for all the healing properties that plants and stones have to offer. Go wild and apply whatever calls to you. Once again, bath rituals are sealed by the intentions you set for them, so think about what you’re cleansing, renewing, healing, or inviting in.

    3. Light some incense to reset energy in your space
Many different cultures throughout history have burned herbs and incense as a way to clear stale energy from a space to make it feel vibrant and fresh. With the rise in palo santo and sage becoming more mainstream, it’s important to honor and remember where they come from, so do your research and honor the ritual. For incense, Frankincense and Myrrh are two options that have withstood the test of time and are still known for their healing properties. When it comes to lighting herbs and incense, do your research and find a type that calls to you to clear out space in. your home.
And remember, intention has to be at the core of any ritual. If it’s not, the practice is just fluff. Set the intention to clear stuck energy and invite fresh, loving vibes into your home. As the scent lingers, visualize the space being utilized in a way that feels good to you. This is a great ritual to do consistently, especially when you’re using your space as a work-from-home set-up. This ritual can help you meet specific goals at work, or ease out of work mode into relaxation.

    4. Future journal to become the person you want to be
You didn’t think I’d write a witchy post without at least one nod to spell-casting, did you? Journaling is a powerful way to cast daily “spells” because you are quite literally alchemizing your thoughts into tangible words on a page. Journaling in itself is a little bit magical. When you journal your intentions for how you want to feel, what you want to be doing, or how you want to be acting in the future, you’re better able to visualize yourself in that future role. This makes it easier to embody yourself in that role now, which is one of the fastest ways to manifest the life you want.
So go ahead and write about the higher version of yourself. Then focus on all the elements I just laid out: how you want to feel, how you want to act, and what you’d like to be doing in the future. Take a few moments to embody who it is you’ve just written about, and notice how your energy shifts. If that’s not magic, I don’t know what is.

    5. Choose a single-word affirmation for each day
If journaling feels like too lengthy an endeavor, another quick alchemizing trick is to choose a word or phrase that you want to embody on any given day. For example, if you have a big meeting you’re a little nervous about, “capable” might be your word of choice. Visualize yourself completely personifying this word and feel free to write it down somewhere that will be visible to you all day long, like on a post-it note by your desk. It can be just as powerful to embody a single word as it is to envision an entire future for yourself, so long as you set the intention to make it stick.

    6. Connect with nature on a regular basis
Science has proven that electrons on the earth’s surface can transfer energy from the ground to our bodies, calming our nervous systems. We know that nature is healing. But guess what? Cultures, tribes, and world religions have known that for thousands of years (including witches). Anyone with a keen sensitivity to shifting energy will argue that the effects of this particular ritual are undeniable. Try earthing or grounding, which involves walking barefoot outside, or forest bathing, which means being in nature (a trail, forest, park, etc.) to reap more benefits.
Take a moment to feel your bare feet on the ground in whatever way feels comfortable. Visualize any energy that does not serve you being pulled into the ground, feel gratitude for the oxygen that trees and plants supply, and check in with yourself if there are any insights that come up for you. You might be surprised what comes through. This is an especially good ritual for those of us with busy minds because it encourages us to slow down and reconnect to our inner voice of wisdom. Trust me when I say, your nervous system will thank you.

Anne Hathaway opens up about the rigorous hate she received after 2012 Oscar win

    Lifestyle

    by Olivia Morris

Anne Hathaway is arguably one of the most successful actresses of this generation.
Having starred in iconic hits including The Devil Wears Prada, The Dark Night Rises, Bride Wars and more, the actress is one of the biggest names in Hollywood.
However, it hasn’t always been a smooth ride for the 39-year-old who reflected on the era of ‘Hathahate’ she received following her 2012 Oscar win for her critically-acclaimed performance in Les Miserables.
Speaking at the Elle USA ‘Women in Hollywood’ event earlier this week, Hathaway opened up about the period of her life a decade ago where she saw “the language of hatred from a new perspective”.

“Ten years ago, I was given an opportunity to look at the language of hatred from a new perspective,” she said. “For context – this was a language I had employed with myself since I was seven.
“And when your self-inflicted pain is suddenly somehow amplified back at you at, say, the full volume of the internet … It’s a thing.”
At the time, many would argue Hathaway was at the top of her game with her Academy Award, the actress swept the board when it came to awards season that year. However, what accompanied it was an onslaught of hostility in the media and from the public.
Fast-forward a decade, Hathaway is taking the opportunity to change the directive when it comes to hate saying, she “would no longer hold space for it”, adding that it is possible to unlearn such behaviours and thoughts.
“The good news about hate being learned is that whoever learned it can learn,” she said. “There is a brain there. I hope they give themselves a chance to relearn love.”

Lie-flat economy seats will be available on this airline in 2023

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

The future of aviation is here.
Having cracked the code for long-haul flights, Lufthansa will officially launch lie-flat economy seats in 2023. To ensure all passengers have enough space to stretch out without the limited legroom hassle, new aircraft Lufthansa Allegris is all set to transform the flight space.
Travellers will be able to book an entire row of three seats, better known as Sleeper’s Row 2.0, on the new aircraft which will convert into a bed with a mattress, pillows and bedding for some downtime.

It will give customers the option to lie flat for a more relaxed sleep during long-haul flights without paying for business and first-class seats.
Lufthansa’s new aircraft is also set to transform the upper-class options, too. Business and first-class passengers will have access to private suites in its future fleet, bringing eight different seating options onboard.
First-class passengers will soon have a personal wardrobe space complemented by baggage storage options and increased privacy. Adding to the experience, customers can enjoy a shared dining experience in the suite along with a large IFE screen.

For a more intimate travel journey, business class seats will have higher walls and doors that completely close with a personal wardrobe closet.
With other airlines innovating in the same space, Air New Zealand was amongst the latest to have announced the concept lie-flat pods in economy class earlier this year. All set to launch in 2024, SkyNest will give avid globe trotters a chance to book the space in four-hour slots.
Stay tuned for more details on this sophisticated new travel update.
