What to Eat Before and After a Workout For Optimal Results

When it comes to transforming your body, there are many factors that play a role. It’s no secret that good nutrition is key for overall health, so making it a priority before, during, and after workouts should be a no-brainer. Regardless of what level of fitness you’re at, fueling for exercise can provide many benefits, such as sustaining energy during a workout, preventing injuries, aiding in muscle recovery, and seeing results in our strength and endurance. If you’re not sure where to start with sports nutrition, keep reading for tips on what to eat before a workout and what to eat after a workout for optimal results.

    What to eat pre-workout
To get the most out of your workout, when you eat prior to it is essential. Having a balanced meal that includes whole grains, protein, carbs, and a healthy fat 3-4 hours before a workout will give you the sustained energy you need to meet your goals. As you get closer to a workout (think: within 1-2 hours), opting for a lighter snack is key to avoid cramping or feeling sluggish. When it comes to choosing what foods to eat before a workout, aim to include produce (for vitamins, minerals, and carbs to fuel cells) and a protein source (for muscle health). Some snack ideas include:

    Apple and string cheese
    Banana and peanut butter
    Cherry tomatoes and hummus
    Berries and yogurt
    Carrots and natural jerky

If you don’t like eating before a workout, it’s OK to skip a snack as long as you are well hydrated and are not feeling low energy or weak.

    What to eat post-workout
The goal of a post-workout meal or snack is to refuel and flood nutrients to depleted cells. Ideally, you should aim to include a carbohydrate to give energy back to your body, a protein to help repair muscle tissue, and produce and healthy fats to help protect cells. If you’re not able to get a meal in after a workout, opt for a quick snack like a tuna/chicken pouch, dry roasted edamame, hardboiled eggs, yogurt, or string cheese. Some post-workout recovery meal ideas include:

Smoothie with berries, protein powder, chia seeds, and leafy greens
Oatmeal with nut butter and banana slices
Whole wheat tortilla with avocado, shredded chicken, and bell peppers
Brown rice, lean protein (i.e. chicken, fish, or tofu), and stir-fry veggies
Baked sweet potato, leafy greens, black beans, and avocado cilantro dressing
Whole wheat crackers and tuna salad with olive oil mayo and grapes

    The importance of hydration
You’ve heard it time and time again, so while it’s nothing new, I’m here to confirm that staying hydrated is key to optimal workouts. I mean, if Taylor Swift drinks 10 bottles of water a day, shouldn’t we all? While drinking water won’t make you a global pop star, it will help prevent muscle cramps and injuries. A good rule to follow is to aim for nine glasses (72 fluid ounces) of water per day. Physical activity increases your hydration needs, so keep this in mind while working out. On extra sweaty days, replenishing with electrolytes can aid in hydration. You can try using electrolyte drink mixes or drinking coconut water with a pinch of sea salt. And for a fun post-workout hydration booster, try watermelon pops.

Natural supplements to aid in workouts
Sometimes you need a little extra energy boost before or after a workout. Here are some natural supplements you can turn to for enhanced performance and a speedier recovery:

    Caffeine
Choosing caffeinated beverages before workouts may enhance your athletic performance and rev up your metabolism. If coffee isn’t your thing, try sipping on matcha for an energy boost and additional antioxidants.

    Quick-digesting carbs
When you have less than an hour before a workout and you need fast, sustained energy, opting for quick-digesting carbs is where it’s at. Try opting for foods such as bananas, applesauce, or canned fruit in water.

    Turmeric and ginger
Turmeric and ginger are natural anti-inflammatory foods, which can help prevent muscle soreness. Try adding them to smoothies and lattes, or season your eggs, cooked veggies, or pasta dishes with turmeric (and black pepper for better absorption!).

I Asked Kourtney Kardashian’s Ayurveda Guru How To Update Our Routines for Better Health

Whether or not you consider yourself a Kardashian stan, it’s no secret that the eldest of the siblings (Kourtney, of course) has carved her own domain as the health and wellness buff of the high-profile family. While Kourtney Kardashian is a wellness authority in her own right, she has a team of experts around her to optimize her well-being. Enter Martha Soffer, Kourt’s personal go-to and also one of the most sought-after Ayurvedic experts in Los Angeles. ICYWW, Ayurveda, which translates to “the science of life,” is an ancient natural system of medicine (dating back more than 5,000 years) that creates a balance of body, mind, and consciousness (consider it the OG of wellness practices).
An internationally-acclaimed Ayurvedic doctor, chef, herbalist, and Founder of Surya Spa in Southern California, Soffer knows a thing or two about achieving optimal health. I may have first heard about her through a reality TV show, but Soffer’s work (and Ayurveda as a whole) is so much deeper and more important that trending headlines or celebrity faces. Known as the western leader of modern Ayurveda, Soffer aims to translate 10,000-year-old ancient practices of Ayurveda into a modern language, making it accessible and adaptable to every routine. She shared with me a few key pieces of advice for improving your wellness and optimizing your wellbeing for a more balanced life.

    Meet the expert
    Martha Soffer
Ayurvedic Guru and Founder of Surya Spa
Martha, considered a preeminent leader of modern Ayurveda, remains ardently focused on bringing Ayurveda to the center of modern wellness. With her beloved line of premiere, natural skincare and wellness products, Martha, Surya, and her all-female team are putting the goodness, simplicity, and practicality of Ayurveda in everyone’s hands.

    Minimize processed foods
To Soffer, wellness is being able to wake up in the morning and know that even on days with a packed schedule, she feels good and clear. Her #1 non-negotiable wellness habit? Maintaining a healthy, wholesome diet. “I want to emphasize the value of eating well, which means minimizing processed foods,” Soffer expressed. “Even though I said never eat junk food, it doesn’t mean if you eat a Twinkie, your life is over—Ayurveda is about favoring what’s good and, you know, avoiding the rest. Lean into what’s good.”
In Ayurveda, each person has their own particular pattern and balance of the three principal energies of the body, known as doshas: vata (air), pitta (fire), and kapha (earth). And if one element is out of balance, they all have the potential to be affected, and symptoms manifest in our minds and bodies (read: sicknesses and diseases). The good news is whether you feel stressed or drained, you can calm and energize yourself through what you eat. For example, if you’re feeling worked up, skip the spicy foods and, instead, reach for cooling foods like cucumber, zucchini, greens, berries, coconut, and watermelon. Take one quick peruse of Surya’s Ayurvedic recipes and you’ll see that organic fruits and vegetables, mung beans, basmati rice, ghee, and cilantro are recurring themes. In other words, add those to your grocery list stat!

    Carefully choose your beauty products
PSA: Not compromising your health goes beyond what you put on your plate. It also means being mindful of the skincare products you use. “What you put on your body is as important as what you put in your body,” Soffer echoed. “We absorb it all.” Translation: Replace products that contain ingredients linked to hormone disruption and skin irritation. While Ayurveda’s MO is “beauty comes from within,” the Ayurvedic tradition is also abundant with beauty and self-care rituals (more to come on that) that pull double duty, focusing on both the exterior of the body and improving overall wellness.
Case in point: Soffer’s skincare routine. She starts with Surya’s Balancing Face Oil, which she massages into her face and neck, followed by stimulating marma points, AKA anatomical locations in your body where a concentration of life energy exists. According to Surya’s Instagram, “Proper activation opens the body’s energy channels and produces benefits unique to each marma, including deep relaxation, hormonal balance, and expanded consciousness.”
Then, Soffer applies their Balancing Collagen Cream that she combined Ayurvedic wisdom with a generations-old family recipe to create. Spoiler: It’s said to lock in moisture, increase elasticity, and stimulate collagen production (hello, supple skin!). Lastly, she rounds out her beauty regimen by applying whichever Surya Abhyanga Oil—Calming, Cooling, or Energizing—is appropriate for the day, depending on what she feels she needs. Bottom line: Taking care of your skin is a form of self-care, so stick with non-toxic skincare products made with all-natural ingredients to give your body the TLC it deserves.

    Meditate every day
Soffer typically wakes up “feel[ing] happy that I can give love to my family, to our guests at Surya, and that I can conquer the world,” she shared with me (now if that doesn’t convince you to heed Soffer’s wellness advice, I don’t know what will). But before she gets busy devoting her time to her family and clients, she starts her day with meditation. More specifically, she practices 20 minutes of Transcendental Meditation® (TM), which she’s been doing twice a day, every day for 34 years (#goals).
What exactly is Transcendental Meditation®? “TM® technique allows your active mind to easily settle inward, through quieter levels of thought, until you experience the most silent and peaceful level of your own awareness; pure consciousness,” says the organization’s website. In another interview, Soffer shared why she’s drawn to the method: “It’s completely effortless, and always works,” she affirmed. “It also speaks to the core of Ayurveda, in that this easy practice brings us effortlessly to a state of balance where our three doshas return to exactly where they should be: at peace with ourselves.” If you’re not sure which type of meditation style is right for you, start by trying different ones: mindfulness, movement, mantra, etc. to see which clicks with you.

    Prioritize a thorough morning routine
Along with her daily meditation practice, Soffer can’t live without her basic Ayurvedic routine known in Ayurveda as Dinacharya: tongue scraping, dry brushing, oil pulling, and Abhyanga or self-massage. “All of us already have things we do each morning: brush your hair, brush your teeth, wash your face, etc.,” she said. “But if we can just add a few more simple things, we’ll get so much more benefit. Maybe we go to bed a little earlier to get up a little earlier, get a little meditation in, do a little abyhanga (or scrape your tongue). Once it’s a habit, the idea of not scraping your tongue will seem as gross as not brushing your teeth! And the health benefits will make themselves apparent when you just start to feel better. That’s what really counts.”
Scraping your tongue helps rid bad bacteria, toxins, food debris, and dead cells that accumulate on the surface overnight. Try a a copper tongue scraper, as it has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. As for dry brushing, the practice not only exfoliates the skin, but also increases circulation and assists with the body’s natural detoxification process (see: lymphatic drainage). Oil pulling is another ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil, such as coconut or sesame, around your mouth for 20 minutes each day, which helps to draw out toxins and bacteria that cause discoloration. Bonus: the natural remedy is said to whiten teeth.
Lastly, implementing self-massage can help to increase circulation, reduce inflammation, clear any bodily obstructions, including stagnation, heaviness, and blockages, not to mention decrease stress levels and improve quality of sleep. “It’s easy to think that because it’s so simple it doesn’t make much difference but it really does,” Soffer voiced. “I’ve stopped doing Abhyanga to see what happens, and I absolutely feel the difference in my body and my mental state. The Abhyanga oils move the toxins out and calm the nervous system.” To get a better idea of Soffer’s full Dinacharya, she gave us a glimpse in this Reel.

    Try a Panchakarma treatment
Panchakarma is a bespoke program for the body, mind, and spirit that cleanses and rejuvenates. “This is the most important thing we do at Surya,” Soffer conveyed. “It’s so simple—just diet, massage, oils, and herbal blends—yet so powerful. It removes the toxins that build up, and it puts your body back in balance with itself so you can feel your best.” Panchakarma typically involves a five-step process overseen by a trained Ayurvedic practitioner and can last anywhere from 3-28 days. During that time, a series of individually-customized treatments are carried out to address core imbalances, eliminate toxins, and promote balance.
Don’t have access to (or $$$ for) an Ayurvedic practitioner? You can recreate Panchakarma at home by adopting simple self-care practices and herbal remedies based on what feels best for you. Start by becoming more intentional about your morning routine and pick up the essential habits: oil pulling, tongue scraping, dry brushing, self-massage, a shower, and warm lemon water, and fit in meditation, gentle yoga, and walking throughout the day. As far as what to eat during the program, it’s recommended to follow a three-day menu consisting of predominantly kitchari (a dish made of rice and lentils that is said to strengthen your Agni (AKA digestive fire) and nourish your body without weighing down your digestive system), cooked vegetables, soups, and teas.
But first, take this quick questionnaire to determine your individual Vikruti, or current state, and breakdown of doshas (FYI, most people will have one dominant dosha). For example, if your Vikruti shows you’re Vata-dominant, you’ll want to try taking a Vata-balancing approach to your self-care, eating, and fitness that will counterbalance Vata’s cold and dry energy. Prioritize more grounding and warming activities like self-massage, meditation, and getting plenty of quality sleep, foods like cooked vegetables and soups made with ghee, and activities like yoga, Pilates, or brisk walking. The main takeaway? Practice self-care, eat, and exercise based on what is best for your body and dosha.

Nobu Dubai’s Executive Chef on innovating with his culinary skills

French national Damien Duviau helms Japanese-Peruvian restaurant, Nobu Dubai, as the executive chef.
Now with two venues in Dubai (Nobu in Atlantis, The Palm and Nobu by the Beach at Atlantis The Royal), Duviau brings over two decades of expertise including stints at Michelin-starred restaurants including Mas Candille in France and 1 Lombard Street in London.
Duviau prides himself for his constant innovation and offers an elevated sophistication in every dish that Nobu is worldly-renowned for including hero dishes such as the black cod miso, salmon nashi pear, lobster tempura and the Nobu-style sushi.
Emirates Man speaks to Chef Damien Duviau to talk about the business of food and the experience and skills he learned throughout his career to bring new levels of success to Nobu, Dubai.
Talk us through your daily routine, the first 30 minutes of the day?
I always start my day by arriving early at Atlantis, The Palm, this gives me time to focus, check emails, plan for the day ahead, and create orders. This way I am all set for the briefings at both Nobu Dubai (Atlantis, The Palm) and Nobu by the Beach (Atlantis The Royal); even though we have a full-time head chef at Nobu by the Beach, I visit the new concept three times a week to support the team and to ensure we are delivering a fantastic new experience that is aligned with the high standards that Nobu is known for. Briefings are very important, here we discuss any special events, VIP guests staying at the hotel and other special plans that require attention.
Can you talk us through your career history and your journey to becoming a renowned chef?
I began my culinary studies at Lycée Hôtelier de Toulouse in 2000, completing a hotelier diploma in 2002 and a professional baccalaureate in 2004. My career then took me to Michelin-starred restaurants including a stint as Commis Chef at Mas Candille restaurant in Mougins, France and London’s 1 Lombard Street restaurant. I then moved to Dubai, UAE, to work as Sous Chef at One&Only Royal Mirage from 2008 to 2010, before joining Nobu at Atlantis, The Palm as Sous Chef. My dedication and talent across the ensuing three years resulted in me having a place at the helm of Nobu Moscow, where I spent five years at before returning to Nobu Dubai.
When did your love for food begin?
My story is very simple. Even though I grew up with my parents, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, she was always cooking. I never admired her skills from afar, I was always right by her side, acting as a sous chef. I would lift pot lids, smell the aroma and taste what was cooking inside. I have many fond moments where I discovered flavours. My uncle was also an enthusiastic chef and he used to take me to different restaurants and taught me to cook when I was little.
What initially inspired you to enter the hospitality realm?
Everything began in my hometown, even my inspirations. Cooking excited me, it was my passion and I always had dreams to become a chef. I started my education in my hometown, Toulouse, at the same culinary school as my uncle. After spending three and a half years at school, that’s when I packed my bags and moved abroad to launch my culinary career.
What eventually bought you to Dubai?
While I was in London, my uncle would visit me and take me to the best restaurants so I could experience what other chefs were doing. One of those times was Nobu London, and during our visit I knew that one day I would work for Nobu. Everything after that dinner happened so quickly — I jumped at the opportunity, packed my bags, said goodbye to the rain and hello to the sunshine and culinary opportunities that awaited me.
In your personal opinion, what are the hero dishes to must try at Nobu Dubai?
This is always a hard question to ask, not because I can’t choose but because Nobu is an experience for a variety of reasons and flavours — given the range that the menu offers. Yes, if you are going for your very first experience then you must try the Black Cod and the Nobu-style sushi — after all, these are two dishes that took Nobu’s fame to new heights.
There are so many amazing dishes (for their own reasons) on the menu — our signature dishes such as the shitake salad, the lobster tempura as well as new additions like the scallops aji amarillo are fantastic and I highly recommend them.

Why do you think Nobu Dubai has maintained continued success for such a long span of time?
Nobu has its own identity and while other brands have tried to replicate it, the only place it can ever be experienced is in Nobu. We use quality ingredients, prepared Nobu’s way – which is, very simply. People know what they’re going to get and that it will be a quality amazing experience. I think Nobu Matsuhisa also has a lot to do with this. He always says that no one can truly replicate his recipes because they cannot take his heart that has gone into each and every dish. Every dish has a story that’s special and personal to him. This passion and love for the brand is then ingrained into each member of staff who Nobu personally spends a lot of time with. I think, this is the recipe to our success.
What sets the F&B fine dining industry in Dubai apart from the rest of the world?
Looking at F&B overall, Dubai is a very special place when it comes to dining and that’s because you can find everything here. Think of any cuisine and you’ll find it and it will taste good. Every country is represented and all cuisine styles can be experienced. From high-profile restaurants to homegrown concepts, you have everything in one place – it’s amazing. If I went to France where I am from there are very good French restaurants and Italian restaurants, but it isn’t easy to find a good Chinese or Indian.
What are the hurdles you have experienced throughout your career?
After leaving culinary school in France, I went to work at restaurants in Paris and there I learnt the French technique in the French language, but I always wanted to go abroad and work in other countries — this is where I faced a few hurdles. During my first six months in London, I loved it — but, I did face a language barrier in the kitchen. When I moved to Dubai, I had to adapt to the culture and how the customer was. I like to look at these as learnings rather than hurdles and challenges.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, what have been the milestones?
After my first six months in London, I accelerated in my career and had various promotions. From arriving in Nobu Dubai to going to Nobu Moscow, and then back to Nobu Dubai where I became executive chef — these are all highlights of my career. I now play a very big role in Nobu corporate, and I look forward to the opportunities that lay ahead.
As a highly accomplished chef, you have developed an elegant and approachable signature style. What sets your cooking style apart?
I started cooking in Michelin restaurants where everything was made in a complex manner, with multiple ingredients and techniques. At Nobu our philosophy and way of cooking are simple; we use the best ingredients and create dishes in a simple way. This is how people can understand what they eat and enjoy it.
How does it feel to open in Nobu by the Beach at Atlantis The Royal? How does the restaurant complement the look and feel of the hotel?
We have opened two new Nobu restaurants this year, Nobu Dubai Atlantis, The Palm and Nobu by the Beach. Nobu by the Beach is a new concept and one that compliments the Nobu brand. It’s exciting to take the Nobu menu and reimagine it while ensuring it meets the ultra-luxury standards of Atlantis The Royal. It has been an honour to help spearhead this new Nobu concept.
How does Nobu Dubai in Atlantis, The Palm offer a new experience from its previous location?
The newly reopened Nobu Dubai now offers the most incredible views, a beautifully designed dining area and elevated bar — along with private dining rooms and lounges. With the new Nobu Dubai came new menu items, we wanted to make sure that we complemented the elevated experience. We introduced 15 -20 new menu items, we created a new bar bites menu that would perfectly match the new beverage options that were created by our new Bar Manager, Angelo.
Finally, what are the future plans for Nobu Dubai?
We will continue to deliver culinary excellence for our guests and showcase the best of Nobu. Besides from this, we have a very exciting in-restaurant concept that is due to launch this year, Nobu Privé, and we look forward to sharing more details soon!

7 Career Habits Successful Women Practice

Some days, I feel like the kind of boss b*tch who wakes up and throws on a chic business suit with heels to match before proceeding to take the world by storm. On other days, I feel like the kind of woman who hits snooze one too many times before proceeding to roll out of bed and hobble to the computer. Of course, I’d love to be on my A-game 24/7, but life’s all about balance, right?
That said, while I know there is no secret to success, I’ve come to realize that there are undoubtedly universal career habits all successful women practice—a cold, hard fact I gleaned after having the privilege of interviewing three successful female entrepreneurs over the past month.
Whether you’re looking to move up the career ladder, change jobs, become self-employed, or start your own business, you’ve come to the right place. With these tips, you can start making moves and make your career goals a reality. Keep on reading to learn everything you need to know about the career habits all successful women practice.

    Meet the expert
    Ana Pischl
Head of Selfmade at Brit + Co, Product Consultant, and CEO of First Product Hire
At Selfmade, Pischl has helped over 3,500 women live creatively and provide them with the tools, resources, and community to bring their business goals to fruition.

    Meet the expert
    Rachel Apfel Glass
    CEO and Founder of GLOSSLAB
Glass reimagined the nail space in 2018 when she built GLOSSLAB under three key pillars: Hygiene, Efficiency, and Membership. First launched in NYC, GLOSSLAB has expanded to New Jersey, Texas, Maryland, Connecticut, Florida, and DC.

    Meet the expert
    Dr. Elisa Hallerman
PHD, JD, and Founder of Recovery Management Agency (RMA) and Author of Soulbriety
The mastermind behind RMA, Hallerman’s created a business that helps clients get to the root cause of their symptomatology by integrating mental health, behavioral-health, and primary-care treatment options.

    1. They surround themselves with positive people
We’ve all heard about the importance of surrounding yourself with positive people, and successful women swear by this as well. For them, having an uplifting social circle is non-negotiable. They know and value their peers, and aren’t afraid to turn to them in times of need. Likewise, they also relish any opportunity to collaborate with others.
“Aligning yourself with others who share your values and building a strong support system is key to long-term success,” Pischl explained to me. “It will help you gain new perspectives, overcome any obstacles, and build a sense of community—which is something we, as women, need.”

    2. They trust their gut
As humans, we’re conditioned to question ourselves and our judgment. More often than not, though, our gut knows what’s what, and successful women aren’t afraid to listen to it. In fact, following this inner instinct is what gave Glass the courage to launch GLOSSLAB in an already billion-dollar industry—a leap of faith that’s paid off massively. By trusting her gut, she was able to harvest her passion for clean, efficient manicures, muster up the courage to ask for what she wanted, and ultimately grow her business.

    3. They don’t overthink
Another thing successful women have in common is the fact that they don’t overthink things. That’s not to say they’ve never gotten caught up in this vicious cycle—they are human, after all—but when it comes time to get their feet wet, they’ll dive right in, despite their fear.
Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that they take an all-or-nothing approach. Hallerman explained to me that they’ll dive in headfirst and take things slow; they’re willing to be patient with themselves because they know that all that really matters is that they start. So regardless of what career move they’re trying to make next, successful women make a plan and start taking steps in the real world daily to get there.

    4. They stay on top of their finances
There’s no denying that success and money are commonly intertwined, which is why successful women have a healthy relationship with their finances. “It’s crucial to know how much money you’re earning and spending monthly, and it’s also important to make predictions and plan ahead,” Pischl told me. This means diligently tracking your finances, having an emergency fund, and adjusting your budget as needed.
When it comes down to it, women who are thriving in their career aren’t afraid to look at numbers. Likewise, they’re also not afraid to challenge themselves and set goals that help them become wealthier. They know that there’s no shame in working hard for whatever they want and everything they have, and they go after it wholeheartedly and unapologetically.

    5. They take charge of their story
Successful women know that despite what fairytales and society have told them, they’re the only ones that can save themselves. While Hallerman says this mindset will not prevent them from dealing with heartbreak, loss, and grief, it will protect them from waiting around for someone else to fix them. This mindset empowers them to take charge and be the hero of their own story, and emboldens them to follow their dreams and give into their ambitions.

    6. They never stop learning
Unlike anyone with a big, fragile ego (like a male), successful women aren’t afraid to admit when they don’t know something, and take every opportunity they can to learn and grow more when it comes to their career. “Viewing life as a never-ending journey helps you step into more opportunities that help you fulfill your purpose and happiness,” Hallerman explained to me. This is why boss chicks commit to always expanding their knowledge and wisdom to prevent themselves from stalling out in their career.

    7. They know their worth and ask for what they deserve
They say you shouldn’t settle for anything less than you deserve, but women so often do in the workplace. However, Glass, Pischl, and Hallerman know their worth, and they price accordingly. They know exactly what they bring to the table and aren’t afraid to ask for what they want or take their business elsewhere in order to get paid what they’re worth. Some people might not like it, but that’s too bad—these women refuse to settle for less.
Knowing their worth is also what gives successful women the courage to fall back on themselves. They don’t let themselves get caught up in what everyone else is doing—something that’s admittedly very easy to do—and know that when it comes down to it, there is no formula for success. Stay true to yourself, trust your gut, and develop a healthy relationship with money, and in no time, you’ll be a powerhouse woman in your field.
