In pics: 10 heartwarming Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid moments throughout the years

Today, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates celebrates 17 years as Ruler of Dubai.
Since January 4, 2006, Sheikh Mohammed has turned Dubai into a beacon of hope through his profound leadership skills and remarkable feat over the year. He has always been a source of inspiration for many in the UAE and across the globe throughout the years.
As the Dubai Ruler marks a milestone in his career, we look back on some of His Highness’ special moments over the years.
    Family man at heart
While Sheikh Mohammed is one of the key figureheads of this nation, he’s also a family man at heart, particularly when it comes to spending time with his grandchildren. His Highness is regularly seen doting on his grandchildren.
To mark the end of Ramadan, during Eid Al Fitr, this year, the Dubai Ruler was at a family gathering with 23 of his grandchildren in a photo posted by his son, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai.

    True people person

Time and time again the Dubai Ruler has proven he’s very in touch with his people. A perfect example of this was when he surprised a group of students at Expo 2020 Dubai earlier this year.
In a video shared on Instagram, the group of schoolchildren were lined up posing for a photo, but what they were unaware of was that His Highness was standing right behind them. The footage, shared by Khalifa Saeed on Instagram, showed the children being treated to a royal surprise. His Highness then took the time to have a chat with the students.
    Changing lives

Being the compassionate individual he is, the Dubai Ruler is always ensuring he helps those who are less fortunate.
In February 2021, Sheikh Mohammed pledged Dhs8 million to Massar Mundharr and her daughter who was suffering from a degenerative disease and needed urgent treatment. The little girl was diagnosed with type 2 spinal muscle atrophy which leads to the motor neuron nerve cells in the brain which enable the body to speak, walk, breathe, talk and more. Mundar and her husband were told by doctors at Al Jalila Hosptial that His Highness had agreed to cover Laveen’s medical costs.
When he met his biggest fan

Four years ago, in January 2017, the Mohammed bin Rashid Government Excellence Award ceremony was held at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum presented policewoman Halima Al Matroushi the award for Best Administrative Employee. However, chose not to receive the award herself. Instead, she let her mother take her place up on stage.
Al Matroushi’s mother has always dreamt of meeting Sheikh Mohammed, so when her daughter realised it was a possibility, she gave her the opportunity.
    Advocating young talent
Sheikh Mohammed has consistently championed young talent in the region.
In 2020, His Highness sent a heartfelt message to an Emirati student who has graduated from university.
The Ruler of Dubai first met student Fatima Ahmad Bin Bakhit Al Nuaimi four years ago, posted the sweet message on Twitter.

الوطن يعلو بالعلم .. pic.twitter.com/Y52AUgH3EI
    — HH Sheikh Mohammed (@HHShkMohd) May 28, 2020

“I had laid a kiss on my daughter’s head in 2016 as she ranked first at the state level in the reading challenge,” His Highness said. “Yesterday, my daughter Fatima Al Nuaimi graduated from Abu Dhabi New York University with distinction.
“Congratulations. The country flourishes with you, thrives in reading and rises with knowledge.”
Along with the message, Sheikh Mohammed shared two photos – one of their first meeting in 2016 and one of Al Nuaimi’s recent remote graduation.
    Looking to space
At the start of December 2017, he put the call out for young people who were keen to be the first Emiratis in space.
“The people of the UAE will break new barriers; nothing can stand in the way of those who believe nothing is impossible,” Sheikh Mohammed wrote on Instagram. “Our ambitious goals are fuelled by dedicated people, who support us until, without hesitation or scepticism, we succeed.”
His Highness has gone on to spearhead the UAE making a mark in space, in particular with the Emirates Mars Mission where the Hope Probe entered the planet’s orbit in February 2021.
    Royal friends

Back in 2017, Sheikh Mohammed met with the UK’s Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Windsor Endurance Race, and from the looks of things, they had a great time together. At the time, the Dubai Media Office said the pair of royals discussed “historic ties, friendship, and cooperation between the UAE and the United Kingdom”.
    A helping hand
Throughout the years, Sheikh Mohammed has ensured offering humanitarian aid is a big priority for the UAE.
In 2020, after the catastrophic explosion in Lebanon leaving around 300,000 people homeless and many injured, His Highness ordered 30 tonnes of medicines and medical supplies to be sent immediately on his personal aircraft in response to the devastating blast.

    Looking to the future
In August 2020, the Ruler of Dubai opened a new medical research centre has opened in Dubai that not only studies COVID-19, but also other communicable diseases. The Dhs300 million centre aims to study an array of diseases including diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, obesity and more.

    — Dubai Media Office (@DXBMediaOffice) August 11, 2020

Praising the women of the nation
Honouring women across the UAE, the Ruler of Dubai issued a message in August 2020.
Posting a video to his 10.3 million Twitter followers which paid tribute to Emirati women, he expressed his pride towards every female from the UAE.
“To the Emirati women, you worked hard, you accomplished and prove to the world who you are,” he said. “[We are] proud of you, proud of your partnership in the development process, we raise our heads with your achievements. Every year you are better and more beautiful.”

كل عام وأنت أفضل وأجمل.. pic.twitter.com/mVxW9nzZfI

How To Ask For a Raise Via Email

I don’t know about you, but the mere idea of going to my boss, hat in hand, and asking for more money is enough to get my heart rate up. After all, discussing finances is awkward at best and uncomfortable at worst, but meeting with your manager face-to-face at least gives you the opportunity to use your personality, charm, and list of accomplishments to win them over, and asking for a raise via email erases that completely.
That being said, while requesting a pay raise via email can feel impersonal and unprofessional, it certainly has its upsides. It gives your manager time to consider your request without feeling put on the spot and can remove some anxiety and increase your confidence. And since WFH and digital communications are now commonplace, asking for a salary increase over email is more acceptable than ever.
If you’re curious about how to ask for a raise via email, you’ve come to the right place. With these tips and tricks, you can confidently craft the perfect message to your employer and get the raise you deserve. Keep scrolling to learn more.

How To Ask For a Raise Via Email

    1. Know your audience
Before you begin the process of asking for a raise via email, you should consider all of the different external factors that might impact your request. Has your company just had a round of layoffs? Have they cut department budgets due to the impending recession? Situations like these might affect whether or not your request for a raise is approved.
On the flip side, have your company’s end-of-quarter meetings revealed skyrocketing profits? Is your team or role expanding? If so, now might be the perfect time for you to send that email.
The size of the company you work for can also come into play here. Larger corporations might be able to keep up with inflation while smaller ones can’t. If the latter is true of your company, waiting for the upswing is more likely to get you the answer you’re looking for.
In the end, knowing your audience is key in this process. So consider the current climate of your company and industry when requesting a raise. After all, you want a yes here, so biding your time may be worth it in the long run.

    2. Make a clear request
You’re busy, your boss is busy, their boss is busy—the whole world is busy, so it’s a good idea to get right to the point. In both the subject line and opening paragraph of your email, make it clear that you’d like to talk about a pay increase. A subject line along the lines of “Salary Increase Request” or “Formal Request for Pay Raise” will be enough to get your boss’s attention. Then, reiterate what your subject line says in the first or second sentence of your opening paragraph so there’s no confusion about what you’re emailing them about.

    3. Back up your request
Simply telling your manager you work hard won’t be enough, so before you request a raise, take the time to review your major accomplishments and key contributions to the company. You can use a recent performance review, additional responsibilities you’ve undertaken, or data that demonstrates how much your work and efforts have benefited the company. Having specific examples that back up your request will not only make you feel more confident about asking for a raise, it’ll also show your boss why you deserve one as well.
It’s also a good idea to conduct plenty of salary research before you send an email asking for more money. To do this, use a free online salary calculator, platforms like LinkedIn, or an employee resource group if that’s available to you. In addition to knowing what you’ve given to the company already, knowing where your salary falls in line with today’s current job market will help ensure you’re not underselling or overselling yourself when it comes time to make the ask. Location can also play a big factor in salary ranges so make sure you’re cross-referencing your findings to ensure your request is in line with the area your employer is in.

    4. Be reasonable
Much like the best salary expectations question is open-ended, the best raise request is too. The average annual raise is about 3%, but it’s always good to ask for more than you want. You never know; you may be surprised with an above-average pay increase. Instead of throwing out a specific number, consider asking for a raise of 7-10%, but you can aim higher if you’re trying to battle sky-high inflation or have taken on additional responsibilities and feel like you’re in a position to ask for more.

    5. Schedule a meeting
A raise is a big deal, and chances are, your boss will need plenty of time to mull over what you’re asking. So before signing off, make sure they know that you’re open to scheduling a meeting to discuss this proposition further. This will give you both more time to prepare and dive deeper into the request, and will also give you extra time to talk through your ask, get clear on what you’re looking for, and prepare for possible negotiations.

    6. Be polite and gracious
Above all else, keep the tone of your email polite and gracious. Thank your boss for their time at the end of the email and show appreciation for them and your current position in the company. This will help you stay professional and look good to the higher-ups, which can definitely work in your favor.

What To Do if You’re Told “No”
What happens if you send that email, have a meeting with your manager, and are ultimately told “no”? Whether your manager provided you with feedback that will help you get to where you want to be or your company just doesn’t currently have the budget (despite the fact you’re qualified), that answer is tough to hear. Sit with your feelings for a moment and then take one of these next steps:
If you’ve been given constructive feedback, reflect on this conversation and then meet with your manager to discuss next steps. Ask them what they’d need to see from you in order for you to earn that raise. Then, in your subsequent check-ins with them, demonstrate the ways in which you are working towards that place. If you check everything off their list, that raise will be yours in no time.
On the other hand, be prepared for a no if your company is not financially in a place to give you a raise. Chances are they see how hard you work, want to give you the raise you deserve, but can’t at this time. Ask your manager when a good time to circle back would be and mark that date on your calendar. In the meantime, keep being the kickass employee you are so when the time comes, you might be able to receive an even bigger bump than you originally asked for.

8 Signs Your Probiotics Are Working

There’s a reason why the sayings “a gut feeling” and “trust your gut” ring true. While your gut can’t literally speak, those gut feelings or instincts you sense when you’re nervous, hungry, or feeling discomfort speak for themselves. The gut (AKA the body’s “second brain”) refers to your gastrointestinal (GI) system, the health of which is generally determined by the levels and types of bacteria in your digestive, intestinal tract—collectively known as your gut microbiome.
Consuming probiotics, or living microorganisms that promote gut health—whether in supplement form or from food sources—can help maintain a healthy gut microbiome, thereby improving digestion and gut function. In addition to keeping your digestive system in check, probiotics can provide a host of other health benefits: “Our gut microbiome is the center of many things, and maintaining healthy digestion is just one of them,” explained Caroline Margolis, a registered dietitian for Lifeway Foods. “A healthy gut can maintain a healthy immune system to keep inflammation at bay which may help reduce the risk of chronic disease, along with maintaining cardiovascular health. Research is showing that probiotics may modulate the gut-brain axis to help reduce the risk of anxiety, depression, and neurological diseases, as well as positively affect our sleep cycle.”
So how exactly do probiotics work in the body? The main job of probiotics is to maintain a healthy balance in your body. When bad bacteria enter your body and increase in number (read: when you are sick, are stressed, or have a certain disease), probiotics can step in to fight off the bad bacteria and restore your body to a neutral state. But how do you really know if your probiotics are working? Well, there are telltale signs your probiotics are working. Read on for eight positive changes in your body that show whether your probiotics are working or not, according to experts.

8 signs your probiotics are working

    1. You experience less gas and bloating
PSA: An imbalanced gut microbiome is public enemy number one when it comes to bloating. The good news is taking a probiotic can tip the balance in favor of less gaseous bacterial strains, resulting in less gas and bloating. According to a 2017 study, probiotics can decrease the gut transit time, or the time it takes for ingested food to be excreted, which can also alleviate bloating. What’s more, a 2018 review confirmed that specific probiotics may help reduce bloating and improve bowel movement frequency/consistency (more to come on that) in some patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). As for which probiotic strains are best for combating bloating? Research shows Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus.

    2. You have regular bowel movements
Real talk: The look and frequency of your bowel movements is a window into your overall health, namely your gut health. A 2020 study showed that consumption of probiotics, in particular, multi-species probiotics, may substantially reduce the gut transit time, increase the stool frequency, and improve the stool consistency in adults with functional constipation. Translation: Probiotic supplements that contain many active strains can help the digestive tract break down food faster, and better digestion means you’ll pass stool easily without pain or chronic constipation. So long, irregular bowel movements!

    3. Your skin is clearer
We’ve all heard about the gut-brain axis—now more and more studies are proving there’s a gut-skin connection as well. The relationship between the gut microbiome and skin health is regulated through several mechanisms such as inflammatory mediators and the immune system. When this system is compromised, the dysregulation of bacteria in the gut can result in inflammatory skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, rosacea, and acne. The silver lining? Some probiotics have demonstrated boosting the skin’s production of ceramides, or lipids (fats) that trap moisture in the skin and keep acne-causing bacteria levels in check. By inducing the production of healthy ceramides, probiotics help restore healthy fats, which can benefit acne directly. Furthermore, there’s a growing body of evidence that suggests using probiotics in both pill and topical form may help prevent and treat skin conditions including eczema, acne, dry skin, and UV-induced skin damage, Healthline reported.

    4. You’re typically in a good mood

Simply put: Happy gut, happy life. “A healthy gut has been linked to less feelings of irritability and anxiety,” conveyed Brigitte Zeitlin, a registered dietitian and Founder of BZ Nutrition. “Plus, it improves our response to stressful situations (improved stress resiliency). On the other hand, an upset gut has been linked to increased levels of depression and anxiety.” Why, you ask? To reiterate, the gut has been referred to as the body’s “second brain,” and for good reason. It produces many of the same neurotransmitters as the brain does (think: serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid—all of which play a key role in regulating mood). In fact, it is estimated that 90% of serotonin—one of the four “happy” hormones that controls body functions such as mood, sleep, and digestion—is made in the digestive tract.
Some research has found that probiotics may help boost mood and lower stress and anxiety. For example, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, a significant improvement in mood was observed in the experimental group (who were given a daily dose of probiotics), with a reduction in depressive mood state, anger, and fatigue and an improvement in sleep quality.

    5. You are sleeping through the night
A good night’s sleep starts with the gut. The gut microbiota is capable of producing or releasing neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which influences sleep quality, and melatonin, which helps regulate the circadian rhythm and synchronize the sleep-wake cycle, after all. One way to increase your serotonin levels? You guessed it: taking a probiotic, which may help stimulate the production and release of serotonin. A 2022 review found that sleep latency (the time it takes for you to fall asleep), sleep length, and cortisol levels improved after pro-, pre-, or postbiotic treatment, and that probiotics, such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, do improve sleep quality and stress. Erika Collette, a registered dietitian at ThisIsWhyImFit.com, echoed those findings citing that when you have an easier time falling and staying asleep and feel less fatigue when waking up, your probiotics are doing their job.

    6. You don’t get sick as often
“70% of the immune system is located within the gut,” affirmed Jennifer McManus, RD, LDN, CDCES at Pendulum Therapeutics. “When you have a healthy gut, you will have a healthy immune system which can help protect you from illnesses.” According to Harvard Health Publishing, probiotics have been shown to secrete protective substances, which may turn on the immune system and prevent pathogens from taking hold and creating major disease. Once administered, oral probiotic bacteria interact with immune cells and induce the production of different cytokines (signaling proteins that help control inflammation in your body). And reducing chronic inflammation is key to good immune health and defenses against viruses as well as disease prevention.

    7. You have a lot of energy throughout the day
Have you ever noticed that when you experience digestive drama (looking at you, stomach pain, bloating, and constipation), you’re more fatigued? That’s no coincidence. “When we are able to digest and absorb food better, in our healthy gut, our energy levels increase because we are able to put those absorbed nutrients to use,” Zeitlin expressed. “Without a healthy gut to properly uptake nutrition, we can feel sluggish and tired.” Probiotics can improve the absorption of micronutrients, such as calcium and iron, from ingested foods. And a healthy gut flora produces hundreds of bioactive compounds, including B-vitamins, which are essential for your body and brain to use for energy production.

    8. You feel satiated for 3-4 hours after a meal
“When consumed, probiotics can help to break down and absorb nutrients from food,” McManus reiterated. “This process produces compounds such as short-chain fatty acids that are beneficial to gut health—one short-chain fatty acid in particular, butyrate, is essential for optimal blood sugar control.” According to researchers, people who exhibited large blood sugar dips experienced a nine percent increase in appetite, in addition to eating their next meals roughly half an hour sooner, and consumed over 300 calories more during the day than participants who experienced only slight drops in glucose levels. Bonus points: Zeitlin attested that because you’re more efficiently digesting your food and feeling full and satisfied when your probiotics are working, you’ll have less food and sugar cravings.

    How to take probiotics correctly

    1. Opt for high-quality probiotics
News flash: Not all probiotics are created equal and how each individual will respond to them will vary. In other words, taking the right kind of probiotics for you can do wonders to heal your gut or keep it happy. When researching the best probiotics for you, consider the types of bacterial strains used, which strains and/or brand names have been studied for their effectiveness, and how the probiotics need to be stored. Check out the US Probiotic Guide to steer you in the right direction for the best probiotics for your needs, and make sure you choose a product that is free of additives.

    2. Take them as directed
To take full advantage of the effectiveness of probiotics, follow the dosing recommendations on the label, take note of the optimal probiotic intake time (i.e. probiotics with Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterial strains are best taken 30 minutes or just prior to a meal), and consume them for a full month before deciding whether to continue the regimen. How long does it take probiotics to work? That depends on factors like your health condition, the type of bacterial strain you’re taking, and the quality of the product. The general consensus? It can take anywhere from a couple of days to several weeks for your probiotics to start working.

    3. Store them properly
Store your probiotics as the label states—be it refrigeration, room temperature, etc. If your probiotics require refrigeration (because it contains strains that are highly sensitive to certain processing methods and can’t be freeze-dried), the manufacturer will typically state that somewhere on the bottle or packaging. Another good rule of thumb for properly storing your probiotics is mimicking how the bottle was stored when you bought it. When in doubt, store them in a cool, dry place. And if you’re wondering if refrigerated probiotics are more effective than their (freeze-dried) shelf-stable counterparts, the short answer is no—you’ll get benefits from both.

7 incredible women tell us what it takes to trust the timing and use it wisely

Fatma AlmheiriFounder of fashion brand Venus The Label

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past?
Trusting the timing of my life is crucial for my personal growth and development. I have learned that in many situations, I must be patient and wait for things to fall into place. Whether it’s waiting for the right job opportunity, the perfect partner, or the ideal moment to pursue my passions, trust in the process is key. I firmly believe that everything will eventually work out, even if the path is not always apparent or straightforward. This belief requires me to let go of my need to control every aspect of my life and be open to the challenges and opportunities that come my way.
This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely?
By setting goals and priorities, it’s so important for me to know what I want to achieve. Making a list of my goals and assigning a level of importance to each one. This helps me focus my time and energy on the most important tasks. Planning and scheduling, once the goals are set, I create a plan to accomplish them. This is something I still struggle with, however taking one step at a time helps me stay focused in what I need to achieve. Avoid- ing distraction, the biggest time eater! I usually limit my usage of social media and turn off notifications to create a quiet workspace for myself with minimal distractions. Taking breaks to help increase my productivity, helps me recharge and refocus. My favourite one of them all, re- warding myself once I have hit a certain goal or achievement. It helps boost my self-confidence when I acknowledge the effort and progress I made, it increases my motivation and encourages me to go even further, of course not replacing the actual goal and in moderation.

    Julie LemkeHolistic Esthetician

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past?
When things did not turn out as I had planned in my mind. At one point I was facing so many obstacles and rejections that it forced me to pause and rethink my actions, my purpose and why I was fighting so desperately for something I maybe didn’t even want. I finally made the link between the roadblocks and me not living my authentic truth and I surrendered. It was in that exact moment that everything started falling into place and my life took a completely different direction to what I could ever have imagined. It was the most perfect timing; I would just never have planned it myself, as it was a ripping apart of everything before it could fall into place. New opportunities arose, everything gathered synergistically and one thing led to the other – paving the way to where I am today. Looking back, I am so unbelievably grateful for all the doors that closed, as new ones opened, allowing me to fully embrace my passion. I firmly believe that obstacles are a detour in the right direction – if you are willing to listen and be open to the guidance of a “higher power”. Sometimes we overlook things and opportunities in the need of controlling everything. But if we are willing to loosen to our pre-settings, we can eventually create space for magic and new beginnings.
This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely?
I allow myself sensory, social, mental, emotional and creative rest in order to be more efficient in what I do – when I do it. We live in a world where we are constantly ON. However, I personally found that I do not function very well in that way, so I had to implement some strategies to support me to be able to function at my best. I also realised that taking a lot of mini breaks makes me far more productive than taking one long break. Just a quick speedy recharge and I am ready again. I am huge on meal planning, making sure everything is set for the week. And finally, the real Game Changer, my work-related Capsule Wardrobe. Having a small selection of clothes as part of my business attire has literally changed my life and given me so much more time.

    Sarah AlagroobiArtist

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past?
There are many pivotal moments in life where time operates as a synchronistic phenomenon that creates meaning. Everything happens for a reason, so I do not approach life with an expectation that I can control my path or what is intended for me. I would rather honour the causes and effects that have been presented to me and know that although I may not understand their significance at that moment, it may come to me several years down the line. I truly believe that synchronicity draws the eye’s attention to moments in our lives when we need to stop and take a minute to breathe. Carl Jung defines time as the manifestation of the collective unconscious, archetypes, symbols, and experiences we derive from. So, I trust that the past was intended to guide the present to make way for the future.
This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely?
I see that time is a non-renewable resource; you can never get it back, so I don’t necessarily see it as ‘timekeeping’ but rather ‘time-taking’. I am very conscious about how I spend my time and who I give it to. I also feel that time is something you cannot control, so it is up to you to go with time rather than against it. We always feel we are racing against the clock, by recognising moments of stillness and being present with your time, you will manage it very well because you will be hyper-aware of its value. It is a currency that we can never trade, so you have to protect it.

Maryam FayadhFounder of Bahraini Jewellery brand JGala

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past?
Shortly after receiving my architecture degree in 2016, I knew I wanted to do something different, but I was held back by the pressure to pursue a profession in the field I had just spent five years studying and along with not knowing what I truly wanted to do. After five years of working in multiple disciplines ranging from engineering offices to creative design agencies, and feeling out of place, I decided to focus on architecture again. On March 30, 2021, I was offered a job at the engineering firm I was interning at and refused it instantly. I had no plan or reason other than my gut telling me that this profession does not allow me to soar. By April 1st, 2021, I had decided to start my journey as a jewellery designer and met with a master jeweller to help me plan my educational journey and a new career. When the time was right, without hesitation, I made a life-changing decision that then led me to where I am today: a jewellery designer whose methodology and designs are shaped by architecture and its rich history.
This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely?
Over the years, I have come to believe that I am most productive when I have a detailed weekly and monthly schedule. This al- lows me to be productive while also having some flexibility to shift tasks around to accommodate for my time with my loved ones.

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past?
I feel the question should be, when have I not trusted it? I have always been a believer in the saying “everything happens for a reason”, but I always add at the right time! Creating my brand has taught me to be patient even when I wanted things to happen instantly for myself. For instance, if everything I had going on right now, all the success the brand has witnessed, if all this occurred at the same time, I believe we wouldn’t have been able to manage as well as we have. For me, slow and steady always wins, and for a reason!
This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely?
I am a very organized person, so managing time is no issue. I actually enjoy planning ahead which really helps me with managing my time effectively, particularly when it comes to everything involving the Bea Bongiasca brand.

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past?
Starting my own brand, it took time and many dreamy conversations but it was meant to happen when certain things were accomplished in my life and career. I felt in a blink of a moment in 2015 that now is the time.
This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely?
I prioritise my tasks by the importance of deadlines. I try not to force inspiration as I learned with experience it has to come naturally and the more you do not think about it, you will get inspired more often. I plan “personal time“ and take that time seriously whether it’s a solo trip by the sea or by the mountains or a spa day – “me time makes all the difference in time management“. Most importantly, I delegate things that I don’t need to add pressure on myself to do personally and it took me time to learn that but I did through experience of almost 10 years in my field.

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past?
When I hit rock bottom in my personal life and education, I realised that despite the obstacles and doubts from others, I needed to pursue my long-envisioned career in fashion. From a young age I gravitated towards it, and the process of creating. Going against what I felt I was meant to do led to me being unable to excel in any areas of my life. After five semesters jumping from major to major, I trusted my intuition and booked a flight back to Jordan where I asked my Father to take a chance and invest my tuition fees into creating my brand, Lilo. Another moment I remember is sketching a dress and seeing the same design in a department store from a big Italian brand. It was another sign to start, it was the time to bring my vision to life, my designs are meant to be now. Time is one of the most precious things in life, and it’s easy to delay turning your dreams into reality for fear of failing. These experiences taught me to trust the timing of my life, to believe in myself, the process, and most importantly God.
This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely?
As a young entrepreneur and fashion de- signer, time management is one of the key components to staying on the path to success. I believe it is the most precious commodity, and aim to balance it between work and my personal life. I invest a large amount of my time in the creative process, designing, and perfecting each capsule we launch. If I’m not creating, I love learning from other creatives in the industry to broaden my horizons. I also dedicate time to be with myself, I enjoy my own company and feel as though my personal identity creates the character that Lilo is as a brand, its life through my eyes.

Loved watching Queen Charlotte? 8 period dramas that will fill the void

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Makers of Netflix’s poular series Bridgerton have dropped a new prequel, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, and the internet cannot seem to have enough of it.
Period dramas always help us escape the present and time travel to an era we weren’t a part of. Generally, most of these shows reek of patriarchy, where women are merely just objectified, (there are a few exceptions, of course).
In Queen Charlotte however, the power is steered back into the hands of a woman. While there is a king, it is the queen who calls the shots. Besides stressing on gender equality when it comes to monarchy, the series also sheds light on issues of racism, classism and ageism.
One of the creators of the show is Shonda Rhimes, who is known for delicately introducing the subject of mental health across all her shows of different genres. Similarly in this series, a mental illness has been highlighted and how it was perceived back them. The shame, the stigma and the archaic treatment that stems for lack of knowledge and advancement.
Most importantly, what makes the show special is the vulnerability that is exchanged between characters. While shows and depictions of royal families are always approached with measured interactions where words are threaded lightly, this particular series thrives on high-voltage emotions and chemistry.
If you’re done watching the Bridegerton prequel, here are 8 regency dramas you can watch instead.

    I Tried Bloat-Reducing Leggings–Here Are My Thoughts

If there’s one thing you must know about me it’s that I love pizza. My gut, on the other hand, does not. Case in point: I usually get a stomach ache and continue to feel bloated even the next day when I have a slice or two. While I haven’t always struggled with bloating, it’s become more common as I’ve gotten older and something I’m self-conscious about. So when I came across Emma Lou The Label, an athleisure brand with “bloat-reducing” leggings, I had to give them a try.
As a personal trainer and CEO & founder of Emma Lou The Label, Emma Vollrath heard so many of her clients struggle with lower belly bloat and wanted to create a product that wasn’t a pill or an uncomfortable waist trainer to help them. Enter the Glow Band. The Glow Band is an extra layer of thermoplastic fabric added to the waistband of the leggings that Vollrath created to help target water weight, reduce bloat, and draw out toxins. How is this possible, you ask? Read on to learn about their reasoning behind the Glow Band leggings, my experience trying them out, and whether or not they really work.

    How it works
Remember those plastic-looking sweatsuits that were popular in the ’80s? Or that scene in Silver Linings Playbook where Bradley Cooper is wearing a trash bag while he runs? Well, the Glow Band itself is kind of the same idea. The recycled thermoplastic is made of a heat-trapping fabric that can aid in bloat reduction. Think of it like your own personal sauna for just your lower stomach. “When you heat trap a certain area—in this case, the lower stomach—you slowly and safely increase your body temperature, which helps reduce water weight and bloating due to increased sweat and regulation,” Vollrath explained. The Glow Band works by targeting water retention, as well as assisting the body in drawing out toxins (by creating sweat).

    My experience
After looking through the variety of options on the site, I selected the Toby Set (because your girl loves neutrals), and eagerly awaited its arrival. Once I had the pieces in hand, I was immediately impressed by the quality of the fabric and the stitching. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a smaller brand, but the pieces are on par with—if not better than—some of my other high-end workout clothes.
I first wore the bike shorts while working from home. I was curious if I would notice any effects from the Glow Band if I wasn’t working out, and I was shocked when I realized my lower stomach felt much warmer than the rest of my body just sitting at my desk. The next time I wore the bike shorts was during a morning HIIT workout. I don’t usually sweat, but that wasn’t the case while I sported the Toby Sculpt & Sweat Shorts. After I finished my workout, I felt much hotter than usual and my lower stomach underneath the Glow Band was dripping in sweat, so they definitely work to get heat moving in the area.
As for whether or not they help beat bloat? Since I usually work out in the morning (which is when I’m the least bloated), it’s hard to say if the Glow Band actually helped or not, but I did experience more long-term effects of feeling tighter in my waist and helped me sweat more (can be beneficial in supporting the lymphatic system to help to detoxify the body).

    The final verdict
These leggings are obviously not the answer to my dairy and gluten intolerance (and they’re not claiming to be), but I do think they’re a great option for helping reduce water retention. Of course, they are not a magical cure for digestive issues (there are many potential causes of bloat), but the Glow Band does work in making you sweat. In other words, your body sweating is what is providing the benefits of reduction in water retention and getting rid of toxins. These leggings can assist in creating sweat in your stomach area, but you can also reap the benefits of getting sweaty from a hot yoga class, sauna, steam shower, etc. I like having this option as a little added bonus for any type of workout or even while doing chores.
These have also become my go-to leggings during my period when I’m feeling a little puffy or after a night out and I’ve had one too many glasses of Sauv Blanc (no scientific data to back this up, but I’ve noticed they help me feel less puffy and uncomfortably bloated when I typically would). Bloat-reducing benefits aside, these leggings are also comfortable and make me feel good, so you can find me opting for them from my next grocery store run to lounging at home. IMO, they’re not magical leggings that are going to completely get rid of all bloat forever, and you can reap the benefits they claim by working up any kind of sweat in other ways. But if you love feeling like you’re adding a little extra support to your body in an effortless way like I do, they’re very much worth a try.
