7 free nature spots to visit this long weekend, from hidden mountains to pristine beaches

    Life

    June 20, 2025

Staying in the UAE for the upcoming long weekend? Skip the crowded malls and predictable staycation spots – the real magic lies just beyond the city limits.
UAE announces 3-day weekend for Islamic new year

While everyone’s scrambling for brunch reservations, you could be kayaking through turquoise mountain waters, walking through whispering mangrove forests, or discovering surreal salt lakes that look straight out of a fantasy novel. Best part? All these experiences come with a price tag of zero dirhams.

This Eid, trade skyscrapers for starry skies and traffic noise for birdsong at these breathtaking natural escapes – all within easy reach of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. No flights needed, just your sense of adventure and maybe a picnic basket. Here’s where to find that “I can’t believe this is the UAE” feeling without leaving the country:
    Al Wathba Salt Lake

Just a short drive from Abu Dhabi, this otherworldly landscape has taken social media by storm. The lake’s crystalline waters contrast dramatically with its mushroom-like salt formations, creating optical illusions that change with the sunlight. Arrive at sunrise or sunset for the most magical lighting, when the salt crystals sparkle like diamonds. Don’t forget your camera – the geometric salt patterns make for extraordinary photographs that will leave your followers in awe.
    Hatta Dam

Nestled in the Hajar Mountains, this man-made reservoir offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the UAE. The vibrant turquoise waters against the rugged mountain backdrop create a scene reminiscent of European alpine lakes. Rent a kayak (available for reasonable prices) or simply enjoy the view from one of the many picnic spots. Adventurous visitors can hike up to the famous Hatta Hill sign for panoramic views that stretch all the way to Oman on clear days.
    Jubail Mangrove Park

This protected ecosystem showcases the UAE’s delicate coastal beauty. The 2km boardwalk takes you through dense mangrove forests where you might spot flamingos wading in the shallows or turtles surfacing for air. Visit during high tide to see the mangroves in their full glory, when the water completely submerges their intricate root systems. The park offers free entry on weekdays, making it an ideal weekday escape during the Eid Al Adha break.
    Snoopy Island

Named for its distinctive shape resembling the beloved cartoon character, this marine sanctuary offers some of the best snorkeling in the country. The shallow waters near the shore are perfect for beginners, while more experienced swimmers can explore the deeper areas teeming with colorful coral formations. Keep an eye out for the resident sea turtles that frequently surface near the island’s eastern side.
    Al Hayer Forest

This unexpected green oasis in the middle of the desert is one of the UAE’s best-kept secrets. The dense concentration of ghaf and samar trees provides welcome shade during hot days, making it an ideal spot for a family picnic. As evening falls, the forest comes alive with the sounds of desert wildlife – you might even spot an Arabian hare, desert fox or a camel if you’re quiet and patient.
    Love Lakes & Moon Lake

The interlocking heart-shaped lakes of Al Qudra are even more enchanting in person than in photographs. Walk along the sandy paths that wind between the lakes, or rent a bike to explore the surrounding desert landscape. Nearby Moon Lake, shaped like its namesake, offers a more secluded experience. Time your visit for early morning to potentially spot the graceful Arabian oryx that have been reintroduced to the area.
    Wadi Shees

This mountain valley offers a rare opportunity to experience flowing freshwater in the UAE. The well-maintained walking trail follows an ancient falaj (irrigation system) through date palm groves and past traditional stone houses. For the more adventurous, side trails lead to hidden pools and waterfalls that are particularly refreshing after rare rainy periods.
Pro Tips for Your Eid Nature Adventure
Early mornings (6-9am) offer the most comfortable temperatures and best wildlife viewing opportunities. Many locations have limited facilities, so bring plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection.Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends during holiday periods.Consider combining visits to nearby locations (like Love Lakes and Al Qudra Lakes) for a full day of exploration.

This Eid Al Adha, embrace the spirit of adventure and discovery by exploring these natural treasures. Whether you’re seeking peaceful reflection, family bonding time, or thrilling outdoor activities, the UAE’s diverse landscapes offer something for everyone. Pack your sense of wonder along with your picnic basket, and prepare to be amazed by the natural beauty that exists just beyond our urban centers.

14 Sheikh Mohammed-approved restaurants to experience in Dubai this long weekend

Let the Ruler of Dubai influence your dining decisions…
With the upcoming long weekend and a plethora of restaurants available in Dubai, it can be hard to choose where to go.
However, we’ll happily go to any place that’s approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
UAE announces 3-day weekend for Islamic new year

Here are 14 Dubai restaurants where Sheikh Mohammed has been spotted.
    Baoli

One of the biggest new culinary hits at J1 Beach, Baoli brings the flavours of the Far East and Mediterranean together over a crowd-pleasing menu served up in a sophisticated seaside setting. And over the weekend, this lively spot saw a VIP visit from Sheikh Mohammed, who took time to check out several of the new J1 venues. In an Instagram video of Sheikh Mohammed exiting the venue, they posted that they were “deeply honoured” to welcome the Ruler of Dubai.
    Sirene by Gaia

A seaside iteration of the stalwart homegrown Greek restaurant in DIFC, Sirene is the world’s largest luxury beach club. Having opened at the end of last year, it’s quickly become one of the hottest spots in the city. Over the weekend, the venue got a visit from Sheikh Mohammed, who appeared to be on a tour of J1 Beach. The venue posted that it was a ‘pleasure’ to host the Dubai Ruler.
    Gerbou

Mere days after opening, earlier this year, Sheikh Mohammed paid a visit to Gerbou. Housed in an ornate Jumeirah villa that dates back to 1987, Gerbou comes from the team behind top-tier concepts including One Michelin Star 11 Woodfire and refined French eatery RSVP. Through a collaboration with Tashkeel and its founder and director HH Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum, the two innovative brands have created Gerbou to redefine Emirati dining.
    Gigi Rigolatto

Soon after Gigi Rigolatto opened its doors at J1 Beach last year, Sheikh Mohammed paid the venue a visit. From its stunning beachfront location to its exquisite cuisine, every detail is meticulously curated to offer guests an unforgettable experience. The club boasts a state-of-the-art infinity pool, plush sunbeds, and private cabanas, providing the perfect setting for relaxation and rejuvenation. The restaurant, a culinary masterpiece, serves up a delectable array of Italian dishes, from classic pasta to fresh seafood. The Bellini Bar, a signature feature of Gigi, offers a wide range of handcrafted cocktails, including the iconic Bellini, a tribute to the brand’s heritage.
    Scalini Cucina

In November 2024, Sheikh Mohammed was spotted along with other members of the Royal family at Scalini Cucina in Dubai Mall. A casual iteration of the renowned fine dining restaurant, this Italian gem is known for its irresistible home-cooked dishes crafted to perfection.
    Bkry

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum visited Alserkal’s popular bkry on 12 June 2024, and the restaurant posted the following caption to its official Instagram account: “We were honoured yesterday by the visit of HH. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum @alserkalavenue. We are beyond thankful for your continued support.”
    Cipriani Dolci

The Dubai Ruler spotted at the new outpost of the chic Italian eatery in January 2024 with a group. The Cipriani name is firmly a family legacy, with four generations of the Italian Cipriani family building a single restaurant that opened in 1931 into a renowned hospitality brand all over the world. In the UAE, Cipriani’s upscale Italian restaurants can be found in various locations – DIFC in Dubai and Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi.
    Armani Hotel

Last Ramadan, Sheikh Mohammed was spotted in the fashionable Armani Hotel Dubai. He broke his fast at the outdoor iftar, and the images – albeit from a distance – did the rounds on social media. The venue boasts views of Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Fountain, which twinkle away at night.
    Alaya

Known for his love for food, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has given Chef Izu Ani’s latest restaurant a royal thumbs up. In a video shared on Chef Izu’s Instagram, Sheikh Mohammed is seen exchanging a handshake with the restauranteur outside new venue Alaya, whilst also sharing a few moments of laughter together. Masterminded by Chef Izu and one of Emirates Man’s former cover stars Evgeny Kuzin, the concept is nothing short of extraordinary, with a combination of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences.
    CÉ LA VI

This world-famous Singaporean restaurant received the royal seal of approval after Sheikh Mohammed visited in February 2020. Known for their contemporary Asian dishes and incredible views of Dubai’s sweeping skyline, the restaurant is located on the 54th floor terrace of Address Sky Views. Posing against the outdoor infinity pool, this restaurant is one of the most popular fine-dining spots in Dubai.
    Shanghai Me

The Ruler of Dubai was seen dining out at Shanghai ME located in DIFC with others in September 2020. This establishment is famed for its culinary classics of East Asia, which all have a playful twist.
    Gaia

In 2021, Sheikh Mohammed was spotted out in DIFC at Gaia, a restaurant founded by Chef Izu Ani. The venue serves up a fresh take on Mediterranean cuisine including seafood orzo, baked feta cheese, indulgent truffle potatoes and the unmissable mille-feuille that is nothing like you’ve ever tried before – trust us.
    Siraj

Known for its authentic Emirati cuisine with a contemporary twist, Siraj is another Sheikh Mohammed-approved restaurant. It’s located within the Souk Al Bahar, the world-famous Arabian Souk overlooking the Dubai Fountain.
    Farzi Cafe

His Highness has previously been spotted at this famous restaurant in City Walk known for its fabulous Indian cuisine.

Manisha Raney, founder of Aara Floral Luxury on building a brand with soul

Aara Floral Luxury founder Manisha Raney sits with us to discuss what it takes to build a brand with a soul, her inspirations, and what Aara really means to her.
What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine?
The first 30 minutes of my day are all about setting the mood – for the flowers, the space, and myself. I open up the boutique just as the city is starting to stir, and there’s something so special about that early quiet. I check the stock of fresh blooms and start arranging the display so it draws people in – it’s a small space, but I want it to feel warm and welcoming. I sip my coffee and go over the day’s orders – any special arrangements, events, or deliveries. Honestly, it’s my favorite part of the day – it’s calm and meaningful.
What inspired you to start Aara Floral Luxury, and what does the name “Aara” mean to you personally?
Flowers have always spoken to me in a way words sometimes can’t – they lift moods and soften moments. Starting my own flower boutique felt like the most natural extension of who I am. Whether it’s a quick bouquet on the way home or something custom for a big occasion, I get to be a small part of people’s stories. That’s what inspired me – the chance to create small moments of joy, one bloom at a time. The name Aara is actually a combination of my children’s names, so from the very beginning, the boutique has been rooted in love, family, and meaning. What truly sealed it for me, though, was discovering that Aara also means “light” and “adornment” in different cultures. It felt perfect – because that’s exactly what flowers do: they brighten spaces, lift spirits, and mark the moments that matter. Starting this boutique wasn’t just about florals – it was about creating something meaningful, inspired by the people I love most. Aara is a reflection of my family, my passion, and the joy I hope to share through every bouquet.

Can you take us back to the moment the idea for Aara first came to you, what sparked it?
It was a mix of passion and timing, really. I’ve always felt drawn to flowers – their beauty, their symbolism, the way they can completely shift someone’s day. But what truly sparked the idea was realising how much joy I felt in creating small, thoughtful arrangements for friends and family. It wasn’t just about the flowers – it was about the feeling behind them.
How did your background or personal experiences shape the creative vision behind the boutique?
My family has always been my strongest support system, and their encouragement was key to the vision behind Aara. Through their love and support, I was able to build something that feels deeply personal. The values they instilled in me – hard work, resilience, and the importance of family – have shaped how I approach this business. Aara isn’t just a business; it’s a reflection of the strength and love my family has always given me. It’s a reminder that with the right support system, anything is possible.
What makes Aara Floral Luxury different from other floral concepts in the region?
What makes my boutique different is the heart behind it. Aara takes a deeply personal approach to floral design. From the carefully curated blooms to the thoughtful finishing touches, everything is crafted with heart, elegance, and soul. I’m personally involved in selecting the flowers, choosing the right color palette, and designing each bouquet and arrangement. We focus on intentional florals – less about trends, more about connection. Whether it’s a spontaneous gift or a grand celebration, I want people to truly feel something when they receive our flowers. It’s personal, soulful, and curated with care – that’s what sets us apart.

Where do you usually draw inspiration from when curating your floral arrangements?
I draw inspiration from many places, but nature is always my starting point. The changing seasons, the textures of leaves, even the way light filters through petals – those small, natural details guide my colour choices and composition. Emotion plays a huge role too; I often think about what I want the arrangement to feel like – whether it’s calming, romantic, or bold – and build from there. Each piece becomes a kind of visual story, rooted in both intuition and inspiration.
What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while launching Aara, and how did you overcome them?
One of the greatest challenges I faced while launching my brand was striking a balance between creative expression and the realities of running a business. I knew how to work with flowers and create meaningful arrangements, but building a brand meant stepping into roles I wasn’t initially comfortable with – marketing, pricing, sourcing, logistics. At times, it was overwhelming, but I embraced it as part of the creative journey. I spent time refining my voice, understanding my audience, and trusting my instincts. Another challenge was carving out a unique identity in a space filled with incredible talent. I overcame that by staying true to my aesthetic and focusing on storytelling – letting each arrangement carry emotion, texture, and intention.
What flowers would you suggest as a gift to uplift any home?
To uplift any home, I love suggesting flowers that feel fresh, vibrant, and full of life. You can never go wrong with sunflowers – they instantly brighten a room with their bold, happy energy. Peonies are another favourite; their soft, full blooms bring a sense of romance and elegance. For something timeless, white lilies or hydrangeas offer a fresh, calming beauty.

What have been some of your proudest milestones since launching Aara?
Since launching Aara, every small step has felt like a big, meaningful milestone. Seeing our very first customer walk away smiling with a bouquet was unforgettable. One of my biggest milestones has been building a community of loyal customers who connect with the heart behind Aara. Every positive message, every returning client, every recommendation – it all reminds me why I started.
What’s next for Aara Floral Luxury?
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue growing Aara with the same heart and creativity it began with. I plan to introduce seasonal collections, host flower arranging workshops, and collaborate with other local businesses to create unique experiences for our community. I also hope to expand into a second location and enhance our online presence, so more people can experience the beauty and spirit of Aara – wherever they are.
This is The Self-Care Issue; what does self-care look like for you on a daily or weekly basis?
To me, self-care means giving yourself permission to slow down and reconnect – with your mind, your body, and your heart. It’s about listening to what you need in the moment – whether that’s rest, creativity, or movement. Sometimes, it’s as simple as a walk, spending time with my family, arranging flowers just for myself, or setting boundaries to protect my energy. Self-care is really about balance, kindness, and being present.
