A day in the life of a digital editor in Dubai

IN PARTNERSHIP: Working in publishing, one day is never the same. One day an editor could be in and out of meetings all day, another could call for a day of events and another may entail a cover shoot or shoot for next month’s magazine, all the while ensuring features for both print and online are completed, as well as social media channels being updated. It’s an all-encompassing fast-paced job, which often requires you to be here, there and everywhere, which means you need the right technology to assist you to get the job done. This is why the ASUS Zenbook 13 OLED is an ideal laptop for those who are on the go.8amI log on from home on the ASUS laptop and schedule prepped features to ensure the website is consistently updated with all the latest in fashion, luxury lifestyle, beauty and travel. With its 13.3-inch display screen and OLED HDR NanoEdge display that supports 1920 x 1080 resolution, I’m able to check and edit everything precisely and clearly with ease. Once that’s done, it’s out the door at 8.30am to head to the office.12pmAfter a morning of catching up with the team, writing and planning upcoming shoots, it’s time to log on to a Zoom meeting to learn about an exciting upcoming launch. The ASUS Zenbook 13 makes it easy to conference in on video calls, which has been particularly important in the last year. The laptop’s video conferencing tool makes it easy to communicate with clear voice quality, this includes ASUS AI Noise Cancelling Audio, which lets users select from one of four modes: Normal, Balance, Single presenter or Multi-presenter.3pmAfter a busy morning and early afternoon in the office, it’s time to head out for a couple of meetings and the ASUS laptop makes it convenient and easy to ensure I’m connected at all times in case an urgent story needs to go up, emails need to be responded to or an edit needs to be made. Given that the device only weighs 1.14kg with a side profile of only 13.9mm and the overall surface being 13.3-inches, it’s ideal for being on the go. Given the memory bandwidth too – a 16GB memory and 1TB PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD – it means I can store everything I need and more on the device. Similarly, it has all the necessities for full connectivity including two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, a standard HDMI 2.0 port, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port and a microSD card reader.6.30pmAfter a busy afternoon, I reach home ready to log on for the final time of the day and given I’ve been out all day, the ASUS Zenbook 13’s battery has lasted the test of time. We all dread running out of charge, particularly if we forget our chargers. The laptop offers a 13-hour battery life and if that happens not to suffice, there’s a fast-charge function that powers the device up in record time – you can go from two per cent to 60 per cent in under 50 minutes.Other convenient aspects of the ASUS Zenbook 13 OLED include the ErgoLift hinge which lifts the rear of the laptop when opened, a small detail but incredibly helpful when you’ve been typing strenuously all day as an editor.Similarly, you can easily log on using face identification as your form of password as the front infrared (IR) camera recognises your face in seconds. You can also easily connect your smartphone if you’re an Android user and use it as an extension of the laptop. In the age of digital nomadism and remote working, it’s a great machine to assist those who are consistently on the go with busy schedules. For more information on the Zenbook 13 OLED visit the ASUS website.– For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and InstagramImages: Supplied More

Career Bucket List: 7 Achievable Goals To Set For Yourself This Year

Even though it may feel like 2021 is flying by, we still have plenty of time left this year to work toward some major goals. If you’re looking to give your career a boost, why not put some pen to paper and start crafting your career bucket list? There’s no reason you need to limit your bucket list to travel and recreational activities. We spend so much of our time at work that putting the time and energy into building a career that fulfills and excites you can be just as thrilling as skydiving or traveling to a new continent.
To give yourself some guidance this year, let’s walk through a few examples of goals you can put on your career bucket list in 2021. Of course, this is just a jumping-off point. It’s your career, so you’ll need to figure out what achievements and changes are important to you to work toward this year.

    1. Start a side hustle you’re excited about
We chose our words carefully here, the reason we think starting a side hustle “you’re excited about” is a good thing to potentially add to your career bucket list is because you should have fun with your side hustle! We all know that the hustle culture we’re living in has gotten a bit toxic in the past few years, so it’s important to only take on a side hustle if it won’t jeopardize your wellness. One major way to make a side hustle feel fun and like a profitable hobby instead of an extra job is to choose something you’re really excited to do. You should want to work on your side hustle, not feel like you have to. If you think a side hustle is something you should add to your bucket list this year, try to choose one you’re really excited about. Not sure how to get started? Here’s what to do if you end up pursuing a side hustle this year!

    2. Find a mentor
Careers are tricky and as supportive as friends and family tend to be, you can’t always turn to them for advice if they’re unfamiliar with your industry or job. Finding a mentor that has experience in your chosen career path, in your industry, or at your current company, can help you gain objective insight that comes from experience. This isn’t to say that people who provide mentorship support are career genies who know all the answers, but as they’re generally further along in their careers, they can speak from experience on some of the struggles you may be going through.
If you don’t see any of your existing relationships evolving into a mentoring opportunity this year, it’s always okay to be upfront about your search for a mentor. People are generally happy to help. Reach out to someone you admire on LinkedIn and ask to meet for coffee. If all goes well, you can request to continue consulting them about career issues. You can also ask someone you respect at your company if you can come to them with career questions from time to time. Being upfront will help make sure you’re on the same page. For more tips on finding a mentor, read this helpful article!

    3. Be a mentor
On the flip side, if you’re in a place in your career where you can give back to someone who is younger or new to your industry, then reach out and offer to lend a helping hand. So many people are afraid to ask for help, so if you feel like you can provide guidance and support to someone who needs it, you can make the first move. You can always consider joining an official mentorship program that helps teens find their way or can simply offer to have coffee with that newbie in the office who likes to ask a lot of questions. Will becoming a mentor give you a career boost? Maybe, maybe not! Even if you don’t benefit directly from your mentoring efforts, helping others is always a good thing to do.

    4. Master a new skill
As nice as it would be, you’re not going to get a raise or promotion every year, no matter how good you are at your job. As tempting as it is to focus on short-term goals, sometimes you need to pivot to devoting your energy to longer-term ones. Mastering a new skill this year will allow you to work toward goals that may be a bit farther off, while gaining the satisfaction of achieving something in the here and now. Take an online course, sign up for a professional certification program, or ask your manager if you can spearhead a new project that is a bit out of your wheelhouse. Gaining new skills now will make your larger goals easier to achieve and can be really fun and engaging. Here are a few ideas for in-demand career skills you can aim to build this year!

    5. Find work-life balance
We’re all for hustling hard and busting your butt to meet your goals, but we’re also really big fans of taking a break when we need it. You can’t burn the midnight oil night after night, so make sure you’re working toward your career goals in a way that supports your wellness. There is a line between working to live and living to work, and that’s finding a work-life balance you’re happy with. Evaluate your commitments, your schedule, and your personal goals this year to see how you can find a balance that helps you feel your best. If a raise is off the table at work this year due to budget constraints (a familiar story for many in light of recent events), ask for help achieving work-life balance instead. Think—a more flexible schedule, more work-from-home days, or time off each month to volunteer for a cause that’s important to you. These tech tips are also a great starting point for finding more work-life balance!

    6. Plan your next big career move
Hopefully, your career will span many happy years, so there’s no need to feel the pressure to achieve all of your goals right now. As cool as all those 30 under 30 lists are, they’ve set an unrealistic standard that we have to be at the peak of our careers in our twenties. Let’s push those thoughts aside and focus on the long game. If you can identify what you want your next big career move to be, you’re off to a great start. Finding clarity and direction for your career is a major achievement. Start thinking about what you want to achieve in 2022 and beyond, so you can start planning the steps you need to take to get there. Need some help setting career goals? This guide can help!

    7. Invest in yourself
Let’s end this list of career bucket list suggestions on a purposely vague note. While we can’t tell you what should be on your bucket list, we strongly suggest adding “invest in yourself” to the top of the list. What investing in yourself means will vary depending on your needs and goals. For some, it might be going back to school. For others, it may be leaving work early twice a month to go to therapy. Maybe you need to commit to going to bed earlier or want to hire a career coach to help you during your upcoming job search. Whatever you need, give it to yourself in 2021, and we’re confident your career will benefit as a result.  More

How Alserkal Avenue has redefined the sustainability space in Dubai

How has this community scaled in growth since its inception?
Alserkal Avenue is an inclusive space, a cultural inventory assembled from various industries and disciplines in art, design, architecture, literature, film, performing arts, lifestyle and food, all in the context of the industrial area of Al Quoz. The Avenue’s grassroots evolution was spearheaded by risk-takers driven by tenacity and creative ambition in a city that has always embodied potential. While we might be just over 10 years old, we have, individually and collectively, contributed to the cultural ecosystem of the UAE and beyond, reflecting our polyphonic identities, artistic commitment, and diverse knowledge paradigms. As a collective of over 70 creatives, cultural thinkers and makers, we have always been driven to challenge the conventional and see the boundless possibilities of the work we do.

What have been the biggest hurdles to date and how did you overcome them? What key lessons are you grateful for in business?
It is never easy to be the ‘first’ or a pioneer because there is no model or playbook you can follow. I take comfort in ad- vice someone once gave me—‘don’t be afraid of uncertainty, it means you are innovating’. To be honest, when we started, I feel like the West didn’t know what to do with us because we didn’t fit any of their ‘boxes’, in terms of art paradigms. We began as an arts neighbourhood in the Al Quoz industrial area, then through Alserkal Avenue’s expansion in 2015, we extended our platform to welcome a curated community of entrepreneurs across various industries, acting as a building block for the creative economy locally and through our commitment to artistic production, residency programmes, scholarship and research we evolved further as an institution, forming the Alserkal Arts Foundation. It created a context-specific and organic model that responds to our city, our history and public. Alserkal and its initiatives are everyone’s community commons: collaborative, open, experimental and flexible by nature.

Why do you think Alserkal Avenue has holistically grown as a centre for the arts and design?
How has the concept of culture and heritage in Dubai grown over the last few years? Despite the rapid commercial growth that Dubai has seen, our arts and culture scene is still young, and the potential that it offers to young artists is immense. We need only to look at the growth that has taken place over the last decade to realise that the momentum will continue to pick up the pace. Dubai’s arts ecosystem, which started with just a few commercial art galleries a decade ago, has grown to become a holistic art scene. We’ve witnessed the development of robust education programmes, not-for-profit spaces with active community programming, and the emergence of new collectives and homegrown concepts within the creative industries. Locally-based talent is more eager and more able than ever to develop their artistic practices locally now that there is the infrastructure to support that; the Alserkal Arts Foundation space was a big step in further enhancing the Alserkal family’s commitment to the arts. The next step, as our founder Abdelmonem Alserkal always reflects, ‘Is not about physical expansion, but about legacy building through nurturing artists, not-for-profit programmes and research endeavours.’
How does this cultural district continue to celebrate homegrown talent?
We grew to become the region’s most influential arts and culture destination over the last few years, and for that we are indebted with gratitude to the home-grown art galleries and the new international spaces that have chosen Alserkal Avenue as their home. With our expansion in place, it was essential to protect our cultural integrity by creating an environment for knowledge-sharing amongst the best talent. We are continuously building an arts infrastructure with many ‘firsts’ along the way. In order for the ecosystem to flourish, it was essential to create a space where culture is produced and consumed and driven further through artistic discourse. I cannot help but remember an old TV interview of Leo Castelli’s (the famous collector and gallerist in New York in the 70s), where he was asked on what basis he selected his artists and his answer was ‘I pick them not because they are good, but because they are the leaders of a new movement’. I think the same applies to our community members at Alserkal. We take the risk on the risk-takers and through our collective efforts further grow the impact of the arts in the city and beyond. Alserkal Arts Foundation forms an important pillar of our public promise at Alserkal. As a non-collecting foundation, we are committed to artistic production, residency programmes, research grants, and alternative learning through colloquia and other forms. Supporting a new generation of thinkers to challenge the conventional leading to new forms of knowledge is what lies at the heart of our mandate.

This is ‘The Gratitude Issue’ – what are you grateful for?
Community. The erosion of boundaries through shared compassion is something I will carry with me from this pandemic. Over the past year, the aspects of collectivity, togetherness and giving back that are an intrinsic part of our community ensured that we never felt alone. More

How Bahrain’s Sheikha Latifa Al Khalifa is transforming children’s lives

April’s – ‘The Gratitude Issue’ – Download Now Sheikha Latifa Al Khalifa is transforming the way children learn and live in Bahrain and the wider GCC one incredible sacrifice at a time. Can you talk us through your career?I’m a two-time STEM certified professional and educator. Prior to co-founding Clever Play, I worked in Government for a few years, in Research and Security. I did my undergraduate degree in Melbourne, Australia with a double major in Politics and International Studies and a postgraduate degree in International Relations from the UK. All my life it seems I have been learning how to serve. Schooled by life experiences and educated in Global Politics and International Studies, I sought the big picture – global problems – aspiring to be an ambassador for my country [Bahrain] and found my special space in the company of children – transforming the way they learn and live, empowering them to serve the future with their best. What inspired you to launch Clever Play?My nephews, Ali and Mohammed. They were six and four at the time and we wanted a space for them to be able to explore their interests and discover their passions outside of the conventional classroom. A space that would celebrate their curiosity, spark their creativity and value hands-on learning by giving them the opportunity to try new things, build valuable skills, and take control of their own learning. We didn’t find what we were looking for, so we decided to start one!Can you talk us through the initiatives on how you give back to the community? As a socially-driven startup, giving back is very much in our DNA. We believe that companies can and should do more than just make money. They should also serve others in the process. We are a proud member of Pledge 1% – a network and movement of companies committed to making giving back a priority. My colleagues and I pledged one per cent of our time to volunteering opportunities. For example, I help young entrepreneurs with diverse backgrounds gain skills and experience through mentorship. My colleagues are very much involved in their own communities and look for opportunities to give back and be of service. We also recently ran a Girls for Tech Camp to teach and train 1,000 young Bahraini girls between the ages of eight to 14 years coding and digital skills with the support of Zain Telecomm and the Supreme Council for Women. Additionally, in 2020, I was selected as one of only 100 Meaningful Business leaders worldwide for our efforts combining profit and purpose to help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal #4 (Quality Education) by Meaningful Business in the UK.You’ve achieved so much throughout your career – what are you most proud of?I am most proud of what we were able to achieve for our biggest source of inspiration: children. To us, children are the most important people in the world. We know that when children are educated, encouraged and empowered, they have the power to change not only themselves but their communities and the world at large. Championing children is one of our core values at Clever Play and being in the business of empowering them through foundational STEAM skills early on is key to unlocking their promise and potential. Despite overwhelming evidence in support of early childhood education, high-quality, playful STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) programs have not yet been incorporated into early childhood education. We are slowly but surely changing that. I am proud of the progress we have made on that front, and for making STEAM accessible to over 14,000 children to date.Who would you say your mentors are in life?My sister and co-founder, Muneera, is my biggest mentor. She has allowed me to see the hope inside myself and provides me with direction, encourages me when I am down and pushes me when I need to be challenged. She has given me the tools I needed to navigate the challenges I was faced with at each stage of the business journey. She is a constant source of inspiration and support but also challenges me to grow in new and very uncomfortable ways. I continue to learn from her every single day. My gratitude for her contribution to my success personally and Clever Play’s business success is immeasurable! What does it feel like being a woman in this region that is paving the way for others?I am beyond thankful to have strong female role models in my family from my grandmother, to my mother and sisters. They taught me that “real success” is not defined my financial wealth, or status, but by becoming the person you have the potential to be and serving others in the process.I am thankful for the brave, trailblazing women who went before me and inspire me to embrace ambition and push for more.So often I get contacted by women who praise my journey- I’m so grateful to them for elevating me and giving me the confidence to continue. But I also want to say that to every woman who thinks they can’t do the same, I’m here to tell you that you can. What are your hopes for women in the future?I’ll quote T.E. Lawrence who said, “All men dream but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake up in the day to find it was vanity, but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes and make it possible.”My hope for women is to be dangerous dreamers of the day, who act on their dreams with open eyes and make it possible. My hope for them is not to break someone else’s ceiling, but their own!How do you want to inspire others?Through my personal story and everyday actions. I stumbled into entrepreneurship very reluctantly. I didn’t have a formal business or education background when I started. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever done at that point in my life, and yet, I didn’t let that stop me. I started before I was ready, I surrounded myself with a great team, and I committed to embracing a white-belt mentality – learning as I went. I am living proof that you don’t need to go to college for business to start one. I want to inspire others not only to do more, but to be more. What have been the biggest hurdles launching throughout your career? As an entrepreneur, I’ve faced a lot of hurdles. The biggest ones are wrestling with bouts of doubt, uncertainty, instability and balance. I doubted myself and my capabilities at the start because I never saw myself as a “businessperson” and I didn’t have the formal qualifications or experience to fall back on. In fact, it took my co-founders and I almost two years to finally take the leap and launch Clever Play. At the start of our business, uncertainty was around every corner. It was definitely a roller coaster ride – and sometimes still is!What have been the key milestones? In our short business life so far, we have had plenty of milestones that we are proud of, namely: receiving local, regional and international recognition for our work, and also preparing Clever Play to be franchised across the GCC. This has been a milestone we were working towards ever since we started, and now we are happy to say, almost three years later, that we are ready to expand to the region! We are excited to offer our top-notch STEAM programs to pre-schools, schools and individual partners who believe in our mission and want to help us change the face of education in the region by making STEAM education a fundamental part of early childhood education! This is ‘The Gratitude Issue’ – how do you practice gratitude in your life?I keep a gratitude journal and write down three things I’m grateful for every morning. I also handwrite letters to individuals who have had an impact on me whom I’ve never properly thanked. I actively look for gratitude in any challenges I am experiencing and I try to do random acts of kindness as often as possible.April’s – ‘The Gratitude Issue’ – Download Now – For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and InstagramImages: Supplied More

What is liquid chlorophyll? Everything to know about the latest TikTok trend

With the incredible algorithm that TikTok has, it’s easy for a new trend to go viral overnight. One such trend which has recently been popping up everywhere is in the health sphere, with many users of the social media platform raving about the benefits of liquid chlorophyll. With bountiful transformations being posted on TikTok, users showcase that the liquid chlorophyll liquid drops are either bought in-store or online and then mixed with a glass of water to have every day for a minimum period of seven days to start seeing its benefits or ready-made chlorophyll water bottles can also be purchased.

Found in plants, chlorophyll gives them a green tone while allowing them to convert sunlight into nutrients, via a natural process termed photosynthesis, this plant pigment actually comes with a host of benefits from providing cleared skin, reduced bloating and weight loss.As per NBC News, a 2001 study from John Hopkins done by Thomas Kensler in his PhD., claimed that taking chlorophyll in or eating green vegetables that are rich in chlorophyll is a “practical way of reducing the risk of liver cancer and other cancer caused by environmental triggers,” with an added claim that there still might not be enough data to support the benefits.Meanwhile, Healthline suggests that this natural technique of intaking chlorophyll supplements dates back to the 1940s to overcome any body issues such as body odours to neutralize the smell, with this ancient technique making its way back now as a popular fad.Similarly, in a recent video, Steph Grasso, TikTok and clinical dietitian, suggests that there’s still limited research to support its benefits, highlighting that the intake of green vegetables is better as one cup of spinach is equal to 24mg of liquid chlorophyll, while you also receive a myriad of other benefits such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibres.

The Bahraini jewels Kate Middleton wore to Prince Philip’s funeral

Over the weekend, the British royal family bid a final farewell to Prince Philip, the late husband of Queen Elizabeth II.In line with COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral procession was a lot smaller than it would be normally for a royal funeral, but that didn’t mean the royals looked any less elegant. In particular, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, looked flawless wearing an all-black ensemble by Roland Mouret which included her coat, mask and veiled fascinator. The Duchess also wore jewels from the Queen’s personal collection, with some pieces coming from Bahrain. The pearl drop earrings Kate wore were gifted to Her Majesty some 73 years ago as a wedding gift by the Hakim of Bahrain in 1947 when she and Prince Philip wed.The Duchess of Cambridge also wore a four-row pearl choker, also from the Queen’s personal collection, which was gifted to the monarch by the Japanese government. Notably, both the necklace and the earrings were also previously loaned to the late Princess Diana.Prince Philip’s funeralDue to the current COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral for the Duke of Edinburgh was a toned-down affair, taking place within the grounds of Windsor Castle in the UK, with no members of the public present and only 30 members of close family and friends permitted in St George’s Chapel, where the service took place. In line with social distancing requirements, Queen Elizabeth II sat alone as she bid a final farewell to her beloved husband of 73 years.A poignant photo was shared to the British Royal Family Instagram of Her Majesty standing alone as her husband’s coffin was carried into the chapel. Also in attendance at the funeral was Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. The service was lead by the dean of Windsor, David Conner, who praised the late Duke of Edinburgh’s “kindness, humour and humanity”. He also added that the entirety of the UK was “inspired by his unwavering loyalty to our Queen”.– For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and InstagramImages: Getty, The Royal Family Instagram More
