Meet the first Emirati woman to climb Mount Everest

    Lifestyle

Emirati women are continuing to break the mould and pave the way for future generations.
Nayla Nasir from the UAE is a perfect example of this having recently become the first Emirati woman to climb Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain.
The Emirati-Uruguayan climber reached the astonishing height of 8,848.8 metres on May 14, 2022, officially making history in the UAE.
After one week of harrowing human endurance, the Emirati mountaineer made it to the summit of the world’s tallest mountain.
Upon reaching she hoisted the UAE’s flag and made the country proud, climbing her way into the history books.

Conducted by Nepalese mountaineer, Chhang Dawa Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks, the expedition was completed sooner than expected due to the favourable weather conditions, according to the Seven Summit Treks Instagram.
It’s not the first mountain Nasir has summited. She has previously climbed Turkey’s Mount Ararat at 5,140 metres and made it to the Summit of Cameroon at 4,090 meters high, hoisting the UAE’s flags on different summits.
Besides mountaineering, Nasir is a multi-talented athlete being a scuba divemaster, free diver and horse rider.

Nasir summited Mount Everest two days before Dubai-based athlete and former Emirates Woman cover star Manal Rostom became the first Egyptian woman to reach the top of the world’s tallest mountain. She marked the history-making moment on Instagram with a video of her “on top of the world”, fulfilling a long-time ambition of hers.
Kudos to these inspiring women who are on a mission to empower women through the world of mountaineering.

Real Housewives of Dubai teaser sparks criticism in the UAE

    Lifestyle

    by Team Emirates Woman

The Real Housewives of Dubai trailer has sparked controversy in the region.
Following the release of the full-length trailer last week, some have spoken out condemning the show, highlighting that it does not accurately represent the emirate of Dubai.
Leading the conversation surrounding the criticism of The Real Housewives of Dubai is Emirati commentator Majid Alamry.
Last week he took to Instagram to share a video with his 86.6k followers denouncing the show in its entirety saying that it “does not represent Dubai”.
“The housewives of my country are our mothers, our sisters, our daughters,” he said in his video. “They are the backbone in helping give our children the proper upbringing.”

However, he described the ‘housewives’ in the show as “women using the nastiest language you can ever think of and they’re presenting themselves as gold diggers”.
Alamry went on to explain that while the UAE is “a tolerant country… that does not mean that other can walk all over our morals and values”.
Since posting the video, Alamry has garnered over 260,000 views, over 10,000 likes and over 1,000 comments, with many sharing a similar sentiment to him.
Popular fashion content creator Fatma Husam commented saying, “Thank you for speaking our thoughts.”
Meanwhile, others commented saying Alamry’s words were “well said” and they “fully agree” with his statements.
The first international instalment of the Real Housewives franchise was announced back in November and is set to premiere on June 1, 2022 on Bravo TV.
The reality show is set to follow the lives of Dubai residents Caroline Stanbury, Caroline Brooks, Dr. Sara Al Madani, Nina Ali, Chanel Ayan and Lesa Milan.

Saudi Arabia has achieved yet another milestone for women’s empowerment in the country.
Flyadeal, an airline run by the Kingdom’s national carrier Saudia, made history as a flight took off with an all-female cabin crew for the first time ever from Riyadh to Jeddah on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
Per the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GCAA), the announcement was confirmed with praise for the expansion of women’s roles in the aviation sector over the last few years.
On the latest A320 aircraft majority of the seven-member crew were Saudi women including the first officer. However, the captain was a foreign woman, per Flyadeal spokesperson Emad Iskandarani.

This comes three years after the airline introduced its first flight with a female Saudi co-pilot.
With goals to triple the annual traffic to 330 million passengers by the end of the decade, the country plans on drawing $100 billion in investments in the sector by 2030.
This is in line with the Kingdom’s aims to expand its airport offering with plans to build a major international airport in Riyadh and eight more regional airports to increase connections to 250 destinations around the globe.
In recent times, under the vision of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, several other commendable reforms have been made in relation to women’s rights.
This includes lifting the ban for women on driving and easing the guardianship rules, Other such key events including the first-ever dedicated women-only motorsport event known as Rally Jameel, took place in March 2022 and the first female undersecretary in the Ministry was appointed for the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in February 2022.

Feeling Overwhelmed at Work? This Productivity Hack Is the Answer to Your Prayers

We’ve all heard the buzzwords: productivity, time management, organized thinking. They’re often thrown around without instruction or direction, and if you feel like your productivity potential is always just a little bit out of reach, you’re definitely not alone. Between smartphones, social media, and hustle culture, we are living in a modern world filled to the brim with distractions, and it is only too easy to feel overwhelmed and exhausted at the end of the day without having actually ticked anything off your to-do list. The next thing you know, you’re feeling guilty for not meeting your own productivity goals, deadlines loom to distract you further, and the whole rotten cycle continues.
The good news is that there is a productivity hack sweeping social media that may just be the answer we’ve all been looking for. If you’ve seen “monotasking” pop up on your TikTok feed and want to know what it’s all about or if you’re just feeling overwhelmed with a workload of which you can’t seem to scratch the surface, this article is for you!

    What is monotasking?
Monotasking is simply the idea of focusing on one task at a time. This may sound pretty obvious or straightforward, but in the modern world of multitasking and always being pulled in a million different directions, monotasking can often feel a lot easier said than done. Many of us have been taught to focus across a variety of fields or jobs from a very young age, so deciding to turn our brains to a singular task at hand can be a difficult skill to master. Monotasking requires you to turn off distractions (yes, even your phone) and focus on one project until either a milestone is reached or a certain amount of time has elapsed.

    Source: @francois_et_moi

    Why does monotasking work?
When you multitask, you are not actually able to fully focus on any one thing but instead rapidly cycle between a variety of activities. Research shows that this lack of mental commitment and the mental blocks created by task-shifting can result in drastic decreases in productivity—even as much as 40% less than if you focused on a single task. Multitasking also increases your likelihood of making mistakes and forgetting things (we’ve all accidentally sent an email to the wrong person because we were doing too many things at once!).
The goal of monotasking is to reach a “flow state” where you can truly focus on what you’re doing without distraction. By removing external distractions like phone notifications and coworker interruptions, you can train yourself to concentrate solely on the task at hand and eliminate productivity breaks that naturally occur when you’re constantly shifting your focus between projects.

You’ve convinced me! How do I get started?
A big part of effective monotasking is planning. What single task are you going to focus on? Do you have a set goal to accomplish, or are you working on a longer timeframe and just putting in the hours? Will you monotask alone or with a group to hold you accountable?
Once you’ve decided what task you’re going to attack and the parameters of your productivity goals, you need to set aside a good chunk of time to dedicate to monotasking. Your session should be at least one hour, as this will allow your brain to fully immerse in the task rather than just skim the surface of concentration with the typical 10-to-20-minute bursts of focus.

    Source: @theeverygirl

Here are some tips to set up a monotasking session for yourself:

Decide on the one project or task that you’ll be working on for the session as well as what you’re hoping to achieve. There may be a specific milestone you are hoping to hit or maybe you just want to make progress over the allotted time.
Choose a time where you can work for at least one hour uninterrupted, and schedule that time onto any shared calendars you use.
Minimize any distractions. Turn off your phone, email, and social media notifications, and let your coworkers and friends know that you’re going offline for that time.
Set your workspace up with everything you will need for the session so that you don’t have to get up throughout. Grab a glass of water, your charging cables, noise-canceling headphones, a coffee, or a jacket in case you get cold. Don’t give yourself any excuse to go wandering during your monotasking time.
Set a timer for yourself. Try to find a manual timer without a big glowing countdown to let yourself get truly immersed in the session.

What if I don’t want to monotask alone?
It may seem like it could be a distraction, but a great way to ensure that you stay focused during a monotasking session is by doing it with friends. The accountability of being in a group, even a virtual one, can be a really effective way of staying on task, especially when you’re new to monotasking. Get some friends or colleagues together, set a time, then work in silence for the allotted session. If you’re worried that monotasking with your friends could just end up being a social occasion and you’d rather work with a group of people that you don’t know, you may be interested in Spacetime Monotasking. This community is a virtual coworking space facilitating remote monotasking sessions. Users choose a time that suits them, sign on, introduce themselves and the projects they’ll be working on, and then silently work together on Zoom. Spacetime Monotasking offers two different session lengths: sprints that last one hour and flows that run for two hours.

Watch: Dubai-based Manal Rostom becomes first Egyptian woman to summit Everest

    Lifestyle

    by Olivia Morris
    May 19, 2022

Dubai-based athlete and former Emirates Woman cover star Manal Rostom is known for breaking down barriers and now she’s just broken another huge record.
The marathoner and mountaineer has become the first Egyptian woman to reach the top of Mount Everest.
The athlete, 42, shared the history-making moment on Instagram with a video of her “on top of the world”.
Rostom reached the top of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, at 6.30am on Monday, May 16, 2022. The following day the athlete safely reached Everest’s base camp.
The record-breaker revealed this has been an ambition of hers since she was a teenager.

“Can’t believe I’m now the first Egyptian woman to stand on top of the world,” she said. “A 15-year old dream has finally come true.”
Throughout the years, Rostom has continued to break down barriers and pave the way for women.
The Surviving Hijab founder became the first hijabi ambassador for global athletics brand Nike and she was also the Egyptian woman to complete the Great Wall of China Marathon in 2016 and the first Egyptian woman to summit Mont Blanc – the highest mountain in Western Europe – in 2018.
Discussing her passion for running and mountaineering with Emirates Woman in 2019, she explained she felt the sport of running “chose” her.

“When I was younger, I experimented with other sports, but I was either too short or didn’t have the right coach – until I found running,” she said. “It was as if the sport chose me, I could train myself and work as hard as I needed to on my own. It became part of my identity and the track was no longer just a place for me to have an outlet for my energy, it was my independence. It became where I found peace, growth, and stability in difficult times.
“It gave me purpose and now, I cannot imagine myself without running, I have to keep going – not just for me, but for all the young girls after me with the same dream – this is what I live for.”
We can’t wait to see what record this inspiring athlete is set to break next.
