Love in the air
This may have been a year of shocking celebrity breakups, but it has also been one of glamorous, fairytale weddings. From the east to the west, we have seen some of our favourite celebrities and internet personalities tie the knot in lavish star-studded weddings that left us wishing we were there.
Here are our favourite celebrity weddings from 2019:
Rania Fawaz & Sammer Sommers
This month, Dubai-based Iraqi influencer, Rania Fawaz and her partner Sammer Sommers, founder and CEO of Altitude Mask, tied the knot. As expected, the lavish wedding included the “it” crowd of the Arab world who gathered at Melia Desert Palm, Dubai to celebrate the couple.
The bride wore two wedding dresses, both designed by her mother Zeena Zaki.
Justin & Hailey Bieber
The couple have been married for over a year, but only held a wedding ceremony this past September. The reception, held in South Carolina was reminiscent of their favourite movie, The Notebook. As with most 2019 weddings, Hailey wore more than one dress, three to be specific.
Her first was an Off-White off-the-shoulder gown which she wore down the aisle. The dress featured a dripping train, and a dramatically long veil with the words “TILL DEATH DO US PART” stitched in Virgil Abloh’s signature font. Hailey’s second look included a satin Vera Wang gown, which she paired with sneakers. For her third look, the blushing bride turned to Ralph & Russo. She wore a halter-neck gown from the brand, which featured a super high thigh-high slit.
Elie Saab Junior & Christina Mourad
Lebanese designer Elie Saab’s son tied the knot in one of the year’s most star-studded events of the year. The bride wore two dresses from her father-in-law’s creation, one of which took 450 hours to make and included a 4.5m long train. The second look was a gold sweetheart line corseted gown with an elongated train which required an intense amount of craftsmanship, including 330 hours of embroidery, 100 hours of moulage and volume creations, and 180 hours of tailoring.
Ahmed Fahmy & Hana El Zahed
Egyptian actors Ahmed Fahmy and Hana El Zahed’s wedding has got to be one of the biggest events in Egypt in 2019. The couple’s wedding was attended by some of the biggest names in the country and included performances from Mohamed Hamaki and Mahmoud Ellithy.
The bride looked like a Disney princess wearing two different dresses. Her first look was a cream coloured off-shoulder dress, which featured heavy embellishments, designed by Egyptian couturier, Samo Hagras. He was also the man behind her second dress, a mermaid dress, which featured long sleeves that flowed to the ground.
Ellie Goulding & Caspar Jopling
British singer and hitmaker Ellie Goulding and art dealer Caspar Jopling tied the knot in a traditional British wedding this past September. For this joyous occasion, the 32-year-old wore four wedding dresses designed by some of the biggest names in the fashion industry: Chloé’s Natacha Ramsay-Lévi, Stella McCartney, Ralph & Russo and Balmain.
Sophie Turner & Joe Jonas
In the summer, Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas celebrated their wedding with close family and friends, including Priyanka Chopra, at the picturesque chateau in the South of France. The bride walked down the aisle wearing a custom Louis Vuitton gown. The star was widely expected to wear a dress by the French fashion house given she is a face for the brand.
Sergio Ramos & Pilar Rubio
Another summer wedding included Captain of Real Madrid and Spain’s national team, Sergio Ramos and Spanish TV presenter Pilar Rubio, who wed at the Seville Cathedral. The 41-year-old mother-of-three stunned in a gown by Lebanese designer, Zuhair Murad. The heavily embroidered glitzy dress and its detachable overskirt with a matching veil were inspired by the Art Deco movement from the Spring 2019 Collection. Pilar took a different route from what brides usually go for, as she had two braids hanging loose from her hair, and held a black bouquet.
Sabrina Dhowre & Idris Elba
The couple chose to say their vows at the Ksar Char Bagh hotel in Marrakesh with Sabrina looking every bit a modern bride in an off-the-shoulder gown styled with a veil and chandelier earrings; while Elba chose a bespoke suit by Ozwald Boateng. The bride later changed into another custom Vera Wang dress but this time it featured a low back, pearl and gemstone embroidery as well as couture lace.
