ATTN High-Achievers: Not Having This Soft Skill Is Holding You Back From That Promotion

The first time I watched 13 Going on 30, I knew I wanted to be just like Jenna Rink—you know, “big-time magazine editor!” I fantasized about going to my NYC office, putting in a couple of really good years, and eventually finding my way to the top. I thought that’s all it took—showing up and working hard, year after year, to find myself in a corner office. It wasn’t until I got my first big girl job that I realized landing a leadership position has a lot more to do with your skills than your seniority.

According to Grace McCarrick, a Work Skills Consultant, Creator, and Speaker, there is one soft skill that matters the most: Discernment. She claims that it’s the one skill that can make or break your move from middle management to senior leadership—but that most people can’t hack it. The TikTok video she posted about this was so spot on, it went viral—reaching 2.8 million views and counting. It even made its way to the FYP of senior leadership here at The Everygirl, and they couldn’t agree more with what McCarrick had to say about the crucial soft skill. So, what is discernment, and why do we need it to become successful? Here’s the lowdown:

    In this article

    What is discernment?

Having discernment, by definition, is the ability to make a smart judgment about something. More specifically, it describes a wise way of judging between things or having a particularly perceptive way of seeing things. As a senior manager, this is crucial, but in order to have it, you usually need a major mindset shift and a lot of practice. McCarrick explains this shift by saying that when you’re early in your career, “you’re trying to find every mistake and everything that could go wrong and see how you can improve it.” But once you become a senior leader, this switches. Your job is to only point out “things you can actively make a difference in and that have value to the people sitting in the room.” Basically, discernment requires you to be more thoughtful and aware so you can see beyond the surface.

Without discernment, you’ll likely come off as a complainer, airing out all the problems that need fixing instead of offering solutions to those around you. McCarrick says this can make you look “incredibly juvenile,” in front of other senior leaders. It’s a make-or-break skill that requires active listening and self-awareness, but unfortunately, it’s not a skill that’s trained. You have to work on it daily, even after you reach the top.

5 ways to improve your discernment

    Say less

The most effective way to work on your discernment is to zip it. The more time you spend talking, the less time you spend listening. For a lot of people, this is easier said than done. When you’re so used to bringing up every problem, not saying anything can make you feel like you’re not contributing, but it actually allows you to see the bigger picture.

“Not saying anything can make you feel like you’re not contributing, but it actually allows you to see the bigger picture.”

The next time you’re meeting with your team and you feel the urge to speak, take a step back and consider these three questions, as recommended by one commenter on McCarrick’s video: Does this need to be said? Does this need to be said by me? Does this need to be said now? If the answer is yes, let other people speak first because what they have to say might change your mind.

Observe people whose energy you appreciate

Whether you’re sitting in a board room or on a remote call, take a moment to consider who you admire and why. How do they speak? What do they bring up? Odds are, you’re not looking to the person who is constantly complaining about every little thing. Instead, you might notice how well someone is listening, and what they contribute to the conversation once they do speak. Maybe there is an industry leader you follow online whose energy you admire. As you practice your own discernment, it helps to observe those who have this skill nailed down.

Take yourself out of the equation

As a senior leader, your job is to observe what matters to the people around you (including employees and stakeholders). To do this, McCarrick says you have to “stop applying your version of the world on top of [your] work environments.” Your version (or perspective) is only a small part of the equation, and other people have their own. You have to allow space for other people’s experiences in order to come up with a solution that benefits the team as a whole. If you are too distracted by your individual perspective, you’ll miss out on key issues.

“You have to allow space for other people’s experiences in order to come up with a solution that benefits the team as a whole.”

    Assess your priorities

There are a lot of problems to fix in the workplace—your job is to determine which ones are worth prioritizing. What is minuscule versus what will move the needle? Oftentimes, small issues are part of a larger problem. Take a look at your workweek and see where you’re spending the most time. Are you constantly head down, crunching numbers, and fixing holes in the system? If so, take a step back (and take a deep breath, while you’re at it too) and reprioritize so your focus is set on the bigger picture.

    Keep practicing

“Soft skills are a muscle,” according to McCarrick. You won’t wake up one day and have discernment; it requires constant practice to become good at it. So continue to observe the people you admire, set a goal to say 10 percent less in the next meeting and 20 percent after that, and keep working at it. Eventually, the problems and mistakes you were used to speaking about before will seem like small potatoes compared to the larger, overarching issues you’ll be capable of tackling next.

Yaya Middle East: Finding the right caregiver for your child

    Life

    by Mehral Sadat

Parents Rui Pinto and Marilena Hadgianni founded Yaya Middle East to ensure a seamless and thorough process in finding your child the perfect caregiver.
What are the core values or mission of Yaya Middle East?
RP: Finding a nanny in the UAE can feel like a complex task; that’s why we created Yaya – to simplify the process. We are a mobile app that serves as a one-stop shop, connecting families with trusted, qualified caregivers seamlessly, making it simple, affordable, and transparent.
How does Yaya differentiate itself from other caregiver platforms?
RP: Yaya sets itself apart as the only dedicated mobile app for finding independent childcare in the UAE, offering a seamless and feature-rich experience for both nannies and families. We offer multiple ways for families to communicate within the app itself – so they have full control over when and how they share their contact information.Yaya also empowers caregivers by allowing them to create profiles and apply for jobs directly, giving nannies the ability to make informed choices that best suit their needs. Since nannies are actively engaged on our platform, we minimise the chances of families encountering outdated profiles. Our algorithm automatically deactivates inactive users, ensuring that families have access to up-to-date and reliable caregiver options. What truly sets us apart is our people-first approach – we’re dedicated to making the process of finding care simple and effective.
What is Yaya’s long-term vision for growth and expansion?
MH: We’re incredibly excited about what’s coming next. Launching a mobile app to facilitate finding nannies in the UAE was just the first step in our journey. While we are focusing on transforming Yaya into a complete 360-degree childcare super app within the UAE, our long-term vision includes expand- ing beyond the UAE market. We aim to introduce Yaya to other countries in the Middle East in the very near future, so stay tuned!
How does Yaya leverage technology to ensure the safety, reliability, and quality of caregivers?
RP: Technology allows us to adapt quickly and continuously improve our plat- form. Since our launch, we’ve introduced features to enhance family safety, such as identity document verification through Emirates ID or passport checks. By leveraging technology to cross-reference multiple data points and conducting thorough interviews, we ensure a comprehensive evaluation of candidates on our platform. Our team drafts each bio after reviewing all the details, so families receive personalised profiles they can trust. Quality is at the heart of our business. Even with nearly 100 applications a day, only about 20-30 per cent pass our rigorous screening process. Families using Yaya benefit from this commitment to high standards – they can easily access our “Top Yaya Picks,” a curated selection of exceptional candidates, or find caregivers with verified references. Our advanced filtering system, one of our standout features, enables families to refine their search and connect with the ideal caregiver effortlessly. By combining cutting- edge technology with thorough human review, we deliver a reliable, and seamless experience for families at every stage of the process.

What personal experiences or observations led you to start Yaya?
MH: When our son was born, we faced the challenge of finding a trustworthy nanny who could become part of our family. We tried the usual options – asking friends, checking with nannies in our community, and browsing through multiple forums and platforms – but often found that profiles lacked verification or weren’t the right fit. We saw an opportunity to enhance the experience with a dedicated mobile app, in-app messaging, and real-time updates – all while being free of charge. This inspired us to create Yaya – a platform designed to provide families like ours with a seamless, reliable, and accessible solution at no cost.
What were the biggest challenges you faced during the early stages of building Yaya?
RP: One of our biggest early challenges was finding the right talent to bring our vision to life. Partnering with an external developer didn’t give us the agility we needed. Realising this, we decided to build our own in-house development team. This was a pivotal move that transformed our ability to operate efficiently. With a dedicated team, we’ve become much more agile – reducing our idea-to-implementation cycle from over a month to less than a week. This agility allows us to constantly evolve and improve Yaya to better meet our users’ needs.
What have been the most valuable lessons you’ve learned throughout your entrepreneurial journey?
RP: Having worked in the corporate world for nearly 15 years with large consultancies, I used to joke with my entrepreneur friends about the freedom of ‘being your own boss.’ But starting my own business taught me that entrepreneurship demands an all-in commitment. There are no real days off, and even during downtime, I’m constantly thinking about how to improve Yaya. The lesson here is that to succeed, you must fully believe in your idea and be 100% dedicated; otherwise, it’s easy to lose momentum. We’ve also learned the importance of resilience. In the corporate world, failures are often cushioned by teams and processes, but as entrepreneurs, setbacks feel personal and happen more frequently. Developing a thick skin, learning from each experience, and continuously moving forward is essential. Turning challenges into opportunities defines true success in entrepreneurship.

What are your aspirations for the future of Yaya?
RP: Professionally, we’re excited about the new developments we’ll be launching soon. Our goal is for Yaya to become the ‘go-to’ childcare app for every parent in the UAE, catering to all childcare needs – not limited to nanny services. We aim to create a comprehensive platform where families can find everything from newborn care to specialised services, all in one place.
This is The Precious Issue – a precious piece of advice you’d like to pass down?
RP: My advice is to surround yourself with the smartest and most capable people you can find. Especially as a small company, the right team will challenge you, support your vision, and contribute ideas that help your business evolve. Embrace technology and stay curious about new advancements. AI can be a game-changer – it’s like having an extra team member who can automate tasks and streamline processes without needing a paycheck. Continuously seek ways to improve and automate your operations to stay ahead.MH: Keep your users at the heart of everything you do. Listen to their feedback and adapt accordingly. Stay humble and remember that there’s always more to learn. Challenges are inevitable, but each one is an opportunity to grow and improve.

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

To Be the First: A glimpse into the extraordinary life of  His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Everything you need to know about ‘To Be the First’

To Be the First: The Authorised Biography of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is released today. It offers an unprecedented insight into the life of one of the world’s most visionary leaders. Written by British historian Graeme Wilson, the biography delves into the remarkable journey of Sheikh Mohammed. Ruler of Dubai, Vice President, and Prime Minister of the UAE. Through this book, readers will witness how Sheikh Mohammed’s legendary drive, ambition, and singularity of purpose have transformed not only Dubai but the entire UAE into a global powerhouse.
From humble beginnings to an inspiring legacy

Born in humble circumstances in an adobe house without electricity or running water, Sheikh Mohammed grew up witnessing acts of vision and leadership that would later inspire his own path. He observed his father, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, alongside Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, seal the act of union that established the UAE with a historic handshake. This formative moment, coupled with Sheikh Rashid’s early development projects in Dubai, would shape Sheikh Mohammed’s own vision of progress and transformation.

Did you know Sheikh Mohammed was the world’s youngest Minister of Defense?

The book traces Sheikh Mohammed’s journey from his early years to becoming the world’s youngest Minister of Defence, Crown Prince of Dubai, and later, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE. His leadership has been instrumental in transforming Dubai. From a modest trading hub into a global metropolis, uniting millions of people. Over 195 nationalities live in an environment of peace, stability, and opportunity.

Through Sheikh Mohammed’s life, To Be the First captures the building of a nation. It illustrates how his determination and relentless pursuit of excellence laid the foundations for Dubai’s iconic achievements. Under his leadership, Dubai has become synonymous with groundbreaking architecture, world-class infrastructure, and vibrant economic opportunities. The city now serves as a beacon of tolerance and innovation, influencing the world’s economic and cultural landscape.

Graeme Wilson, the book’s author, brings a wealth of expertise to this project. A Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Wilson has lived in the UAE for 34 years. He has previously penned acclaimed biographies of the UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. His unique perspective and experience have enabled him to craft an in-depth and compelling narrative about Sheikh Mohammed’s life and achievements.

The biography includes exclusive stories and photographs, many of which have never been shared before. Through first-hand accounts from those whose lives Sheikh Mohammed has influenced. Along with testimonies from global leaders who have worked with him. The book offers a nuanced and intimate portrait of Dubai’s ruler.
Editor-in-Chief of Motivate Media Group on publishing this book

Ian Fairservice, Managing Partner and Group Editor-in-Chief of Motivate Media Group, which is publishing the book, described it as “a unique insight into the making of an extraordinary leader and the building of a remarkable nation.” He added, “We are truly honoured to bring this authorised biography to life, sharing the journey of Sheikh Mohammed from his humble beginnings to the global stage.”

Ultimately, To Be the First is not just the story of a man, but the story of a nation’s rise. It is a testament to Sheikh Mohammed’s unwavering vision and his determination to excel in the face of challenges. By chronicling his journey, the book captures the spirit of a leader who has propelled his nation to unprecedented heights. He has created a legacy that continues to shape the future of the UAE and the world.

Amira Sajwani on carving her own niche with PRYPCO

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Amira Sajwani discusses her latest venture PRYPCO and how it has carved her own unique path in real estate by utilising innovative ways to make property investment accessible to all, allowing her to build her own legacy and carry on her family’s.
PRYPCO aims to democratise real estate investments. How did you conceptualise this?
PRYPCO was born from the vision of making real estate accessible to everyone by breaking down traditional barriers. Through technology, we created a platform that simplifies the process and enables “Real Estate Freedom.” PRYPCO Blocks, our fractional ownership vertical regulated by DFSA, al- lows investments in Dubai real estate with as little as AED 500, making property ownership achievable for all. We’ve fully funded nine properties already, proving strong demand and highlighting the growing interest in Dubai’s real estate market.
What does “Real Estate Freedom” mean at PRYPCO?
“Real Estate Freedom” is about removing restrictions so that individuals can buy, sell, manage, and invest without financial barriers. PRYPCO offers a one-stop solution, covering everything from mortgage options to the UAE Golden Visa. With PRYPCO Mort- gage, we’ve partnered with over 18 UAE banks to offer efficient home loan services, including pre-approvals and competitive refinancing options. In August 2024, we hit our highest single-month disbursal of AED 500 million, reflecting the demand and impact of our approach in Dubai’s property market.
What innovations are coming next in real estate, and how is PRYPCO preparing?
The proptech landscape is evolving, and PRYPCO is ready to lead. We’ve unified various real estate services into one platform, making it accessible to brokers, agents, buyers, and developers. This consolidation simplifies the real estate journey, catering to the growing interest in Dubai as a place to live and invest. I’m thrilled to see the industry transformation we’ll bring in the years ahead.
You’ve launched ventures across different sectors. What drives your entrepreneurial diversity?
Growing up, I watched my father, Hussain Sajwani, diversify DAMAC Group across six industries worldwide. That taught me to adapt and evolve continuously. Inspired by his journey, I founded PRYPCO and Amali Properties with my brother, Ali, aiming to innovate across sectors. Diversification challenges us to drive growth and make a meaningful impact in every industry we enter.

What advice would you offer to aspiring female entrepreneurs?
Resilience is key. The entrepreneurial path is challenging, but perseverance, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning are essential. Em- brace each challenge as an opportunity for growth. Trust your abilities, break through barriers, and know that every experience shapes your success.
How do you balance managing multiple ventures with personal commitments?
I’m highly organised and address tasks immediately to maintain balance. Effective delegation and an empowered team are crucial. While weekdays are work-focused, I ensure quality family time, like putting my daughters to bed, and I fully disconnect on weekends. This balance lets me be present in both my career and family life.
What do you consider your greatest entrepreneurial achievement?
My greatest achievement is seeing the impact of PRYPCO and our other ventures on clients and communities. We’ve democratised real estate investment, fostering financial inclusion and allowing people from diverse backgrounds to build wealth. Success, for me, is about creating positive change, addressing real needs, and contributing to society’s betterment.
How did your educational background shape your approach to business and leadership?
Education taught me critical thinking and problem-solving, both essential for effective leadership. It instilled a focus on ethical and sustainable business practices, which I carry into every venture.
As an advocate for women in business, what changes would you like to see in the UAE’s business ecosystem?
The UAE has made significant strides in empowering female entrepreneurs, but more funding tailored to women-led ventures and mentorship programmes would further support women’s success and reinforce the UAE’s leadership in gender equality.

What does success mean to you, both professionally and personally?
Professionally, success is building sustainable businesses that positively impact their communities. Personally, it’s balancing career with giving back to the community and enjoying a fulfilling life with my family.
This is Precious Issue – what is the most precious thing to you?
Family is my most cherished aspect of life; they are my foundation and support system. We were raised to prioritise family above all else and to always look out for one another. This principle guides us not only in our personal lives but also in our business endeavours. It’s the reason we have been able to build a successful family business across generations, and we owe this to our father, Hussain Sajwani, and our mother.

CEO of Cymbiotika ME on what it takes to drive success in the global supplement market

The CEO of Cymbiotika Middle East, Borna Bandari, discusses expanding in a new market and what it takes to drive success in the global supplement market.
What does the first 30 minutes of you day look like, your morning routine?
First thing I do is make my bed and go straight to my kitchen for a cup of salt water to rehydrate. I check emails and messages while I drink my salt water, then take Cymbiotika NMN, Molecular Hydrogen and Glutathione at roughly the same time. I wait as long as I possibly can before preparing my Turkish coffee, which is still non-negotiable. I work very closely with the team in California (who are 11 hours behind), so I often wake up to a considerable number of emails and messages that require attention first thing in the morning. I’d like to incorporate more journaling and meditation into my morning routine.
What was the vision from the outset for Cymbiotika Middle East and why was the Middle East the next key market for the brand after the US?
Expanding to the Middle East, and particularly starting in the UAE, all happened very organically. Like most things Cymbiotika, it was driven by passion rather than purely a business decision. I was here on a vacation in 2021, and I saw how fast the wellness space was growing. What I saw in Dubai was unlike any health movement I had seen anywhere else in the world. I called Shahab Elmi, a close friend and also CEO of Cymbiotika USA, and told him he should consider expanding to the UAE, knowing they had just launched in Canada and the UK. I was still working as a litigation attorney, so the thought of me getting involved didn’t even cross my mind. I just loved the brand and everything they were doing as a unit. Shahab gave me one of his famous pep-talks, and next thing you know I am on a one-way flight to move to Dubai and launch Cymbiotika Middle East.

“Cymbiotika customers trust us, there is no greater honour than to show up for people’s health – and we take that very seriously”

What is the DNA of Cymbiotika?
As my other business partner, and also close friend Chervin Jafarieh always says, “How you do anything is how you do everything.” We go out of our way to formulate only the most cutting-edge products. Each formulation is thoroughly researched, and we select compounds that fully potentiate each other. Hence the name Cymbiotika. We don’t create any basic products, and we are constantly changing and updating formulas as we deem necessary. Cymbiotika customers trust us, there is no greater honour than to show up for people’s health – and we take that very seriously.

How did you know it was the right time to launch in the Middle East?
We recognised Dubai as being a rapidly expanding and progressive market. The ability to combine foresight and forward thinking while building stable momentum for business has drawn not only those wanting to expand their brands globally but also provided a city that a wide demographic of nationalities want to call home. This means we are able to scale across these demographics as a brand through one hub of connection and commerce.
You have known the founders since childhood – what benefits has this brought to the business?
I have always worked with close friends, in all my businesses. I have known the founders of Cymbiotika for decades and it has proven to be an invaluable benefit because of the trust and solidarity we have with each other. While we are scaling a business, it is still just a group of friends doing what we love, together. We are having fun while doing something very special. We trust each other where we each excel, and this drives the business forward at a faster pace. I also know the depth of wisdom that Shahab, Durana and Chervin bring to the table, whether in the business or wellness arenas, so that gives me a lot of confidence out here. Our entire team is remarkable – from marketing to legal to fulfilment – and they all help make the magic happen.
How do you approach sourcing optimal ingredients and has this been a challenge as the brand has scaled?
We have secured sustainable and strong relationships with the best farmers, extractors and every single outlet of raw material suppliers globally. Our D3, K2, reduced glutathione, fermented vitamin C, phosphatidylcholine, Icelandic Astaxanthin, and countless other compounds, all come at the highest grade available. As far as the challenge as the brand scales, it is surprisingly the opposite. We are able to look one or two years ahead and allocate materials because of our growth and yearly projections. This helps keep us ahead of any supply issues. There is a mutual respect between us and our suppliers of raw materials. It is a true partnership.
What has been the most effective marketing that has delivered sales and how do you see social media impacting this?
I think word of mouth has been our driving force. We have really been blessed with growing the most incredible community, and the customers who rave about us to their friends and family, truly understand who we are, and what we are creating. When you have an optimal product, it speaks for itself and to date we have not had to invest considerably in marketing for the Middle East as the traction we have gained has all been organic, consistent YOY growth. Customer service and the client is always at the centre of what we do as a brand and this level of customer satisfaction alongside delivering the highest-grade product on the market is where the alchemy is. Social media is undoubtedly a key factor in today’s business world, but again we have been lucky that many of the social media personalities love our brand and often reach out to us. Our main focus with social media is to keep it real.

“Cymbiotika is trailblazing the much-needed evolution in the supplement world, breaking through old barriers and plateaus. Designing and creating tier one grade bio-ceuticals”

Dubai is a very competitive market, especially in the wellness space. Do you find that challenging?
No, I am actually a fan of many of our counterparts in this space. I think they help draw more attention to wellness and we all thrive in the long run. Cymbiotika is trailblazing the much-needed evolution in the supplement world, breaking through old barriers and plateaus. Designing and creating tier one grade Bio-Ceuticals Formulas with intention and purpose. We don’t want to compete with anyone, we want to inspire and help raise the industry standards. We are talking about people’s health. From our perspective, nothing is more important.
What has been the biggest reward?
Without question, the people I have met. Representing a brand in the wellness space like Cymbiotika has been an incredible way to connect with so many remarkable individuals. In just a few years I have amassed friends who have really become family, and I wouldn’t trade that for any other reward.
Which products have you seen the region adopt quickly as part of their daily wellness tools?
Our entire range does well here, but one which stands out would have to be Glutathione. Also, because Dubai is such a fitness-hub, our advanced electrolyte formula is very popular with athletes. Our Liposomal B12+B6 is a crowd favourite, so is our Liposomal D3+K2+CoQ10. Our formulas taste amazing, plain and simple. We have a unique offering, we create state-of-the-art liposomal formulas that are food-based, have no added fillers, no toxic preservative systems, and only organic flavour extracts.

Who has inspired you in terms of business and life and why?
There are too many people to name, but I would have to put my parents at the top of my list. I grew up in an entrepreneurial household. My dad quit his job when I was in second grade to start his own business. From a young age, I was involved in every project he had, whether it be a dry cleaner or real estate. We discussed every move we would make. In fact, we still do the same today. His relentless pursuit and perseverance rubbed off on me and is now deeply embedded in my DNA. My mom imparted many other ways of life on me. She is the type to forgive and help her worst enemy. I learned compassion, empathy and how to balance the mind and heart. As an entrepreneur, these attributes can help you become a great leader.
What daily practices do you undertake to ensure you stay in your best energy?
I workout at the gym everyday with my trainer. If I miss a day of working out, I can feel it in my mind and body. Also, preparing all my own meals and making sure I am consistent with my supplements. I feel that if you are properly taking care of your body, everything else will naturally follow, i.e. business, relationships, family, etc.
What are your three non-negotiable Cymbiotika products everyone should be using?
I really think we should start with the basics before discussing supplements. First and foremost, how is the quality of your water? The water you drink, the water you shower with. Drinking salt water is a highly underrated medicine. Getting enough sunlight in your eyes during the day, preferably early in the day. Making sure you are eating wholesome nutritious meals consistently throughout the day. Once you cover the basics, then you can move on to supplementation. Some of my non-negotiables would include Glutathione and molecular hydrogen in the morning for detoxification. Apple cider vinegar before my meals, and probiotics at night to assist with gut health. These work well with my body, but everybody is different, so you need to go down your own wellness journey to figure it out.
What is the most precious piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
My uncle once told me to keep my life simple. At the time I didn’t think much of it, but a decade later I can say it is one of the best pieces of advice I have ever received.
