UAE Eid holidays 2025: Forecast from astronomical community

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

As the UAE prepares for a new year, the astronomical community is already looking to the heavens to predict the exact dates of the nation’s most anticipated breaks — the Eid holidays. Thanks to the UAE Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024, we have a general outline of public and private holidays for 2025. However, the precise dates of many of these celebrations depend on lunar phases, which can vary slightly from year to year.

The Islamic calendar, which governs many of the UAE’s religious holidays, is based on the lunar cycle. This means that the dates of events like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha can shift relative to the Gregorian calendar. The Moon Sighting Committee plays a crucial role in determining the exact start date of these holidays by visually confirming the appearance of the new moon.

Based on astronomical predictions, the UAE can expect a year filled with long weekends. Eid al-Fitr is likely to fall between Monday, March 31, and Wednesday, April 2. Additionally, Arafat Day is anticipated to occur on Friday, May 30, leading to Eid al-Adha celebrations from Saturday, May 31, to Wednesday, June 2.

Beyond the major religious festivals, the UAE will also observe several other significant holidays in 2025. These include:
Gregorian New Year: A one-day holiday on January 1.
Islamic New Year: Falling on Muharram 1, the Gregorian date of which will be confirmed closer to the event.
Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday: Celebrated on Rabi Al Awwal 12, with the Gregorian date to be determined.
Commemoration Day and UAE Union Day: Honored on December 2 and 3, respectively.

The Emirates Astronomy Society has played a pivotal role in predicting these holiday dates. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors, has stated that the crescent moon of Ramadan 1446 AH will be born on Friday, February 28, 2025. This means that Ramadan itself is likely to begin on Saturday, March 1.

As the UAE prepares for a year filled with cultural and religious celebrations, the astronomical community will continue to monitor the lunar cycle and provide accurate predictions for the nation’s holiday calendar. With a combination of traditional knowledge and modern science, the UAE can anticipate a year of festivities marked by both spiritual significance and astronomical wonder.

UAE may face heavy rain and thunderstorms this week

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

The UAE is bracing for a week of torrential rain, thunder, and lightning, as an orange weather alert has been issued by the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). This sudden shift in weather marks a stark contrast to the scorching summer temperatures the country has endured.

According to the NCM’s forecast, convective cloud formations are expected to bring heavy rainfall, particularly in the internal and southern regions. Reports of rainfall have already been confirmed in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, and more precipitation is anticipated in the coming days.

#الحالة_الجوية خلال فترة من الأحد 6 إلى الأربعاء 9 أكتوبر 2024. The weather condition during the period Sunday 6 to Wednesday 9 October 2024 pic.twitter.com/Pw4Lkc45CY
    — المركز الوطني للأرصاد (@ncmuae) October 5, 2024

The authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during this period. An orange weather warning has been issued, reminding residents to stay alert and prioritize safety.
The NCM’s weather forecast indicates that a surface low-pressure system is responsible for the upcoming rainfall. This weather pattern will result in precipitation across several eastern, northern, and southern areas of the UAE. From Monday, October 7, to Wednesday, October 9, heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunder is expected.
The humid and cloudy conditions are set to persist through Thursday and Friday. However, the rainfall is expected to subside, with mist formation and light to moderate winds prevailing in some areas.
This unexpected bout of rainfall has led to speculation about whether it could mark the unofficial end of summer in Dubai. While the summer season typically lasts until late October or early November, this week’s weather event could signal an earlier than usual transition to cooler temperatures.
As the UAE grapples with the changing weather conditions, it is essential for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The NCM’s regular updates and weather advisories will be crucial in ensuring public safety during this period of increased rainfall.

The last time the UAE was faced with  heavy rain, which was a stark contrast to the typically dry conditions, was experienced in April 2024. The last time significant rainfall occurred in April 2024 was a rare event that caught many residents by surprise. The downpour was accompanied by strong winds and occasional thunder, creating a dramatic and unusual atmosphere. While the rain provided a much-needed respite from the summer heat, it also caused some disruptions, such as traffic congestion and flooding in low-lying areas. The unexpected April rainfall served as a reminder of the UAE’s unpredictable weather patterns and the importance of being prepared for sudden changes.

Sheikh Hamdan announces a new golden visa: Are you eligible?

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Under the directives of @HHShkMohd, and on the occassion of World Teachers’ Day, @HamdanMohammed announces Golden Visas for exceptional educators in Dubai’s private education institutions.https://t.co/bEZvOJ9Ncr pic.twitter.com/LKqLw9bAeD
    — Dubai Media Office (@DXBMediaOffice) October 5, 2024

In a move that underscores the city’s commitment to education and its talented workforce, Dubai has announced a new category of individuals eligible for the prestigious golden visa: teachers. This significant expansion of the golden visa program was unveiled on World Teachers’ Day, October 5, by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai.
The golden visa, a long-term residency permit, offers holders the security and convenience of living and working in Dubai without the need for frequent visa renewals. This attractive perk is now extended to exceptional educators who have made substantial contributions to Dubai’s private education sector.
Teachers working in private early childhood centers, schools, and higher education institutions in the city are eligible for the golden visa. To qualify, educators must demonstrate outstanding performance and have a proven track record of excellence in their field.
Sheikh Hamdan emphasized the profound respect and gratitude Dubai holds for its teachers. “On the occasion of World Teachers’ Day, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all teachers and educators,” he stated. “Their dedication and achievements are instrumental in shaping the minds of future generations and driving the progress of our nation.”

The golden visa initiative aligns with Dubai’s Education 33 strategy, which aims to establish the city as a global hub for education and attract top talent from around the world. By recognizing and rewarding the exceptional contributions of teachers, Dubai is reinforcing its commitment to investing in human capital and fostering a thriving educational ecosystem.
The announcement of the golden visa for teachers comes on the heels of another significant milestone in Dubai’s educational landscape. On September 30, the Emirate declared February 28 as Emirati Day for Education, a national holiday dedicated to honoring the role of education in the UAE’s progress. This new holiday pays tribute to the founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who witnessed the graduation of the first batch of teachers on February 28, 1982.
Dubai’s decision to expand the golden visa program to include teachers is a testament to the city’s recognition of the vital role educators play in shaping the future. By offering teachers the opportunity to secure long-term residency and build a stable life in Dubai, the city is not only honoring their contributions but also attracting and retaining top talent in the education sector.
