I’ve made a conscious decision over the last year to be more mindful of the way I spend money, and for someone who is embarrassingly obsessed with makeup and skincare, it has certainly been a challenge. I looked up one day and realized that I was surrounded by a ton of products that I didn’t really love, and I was constantly buying more stuff to make up for the disappointment I felt for what I already had.
I’ve never been a brand loyalist — I’ve always wanted to try as many new things as possible, which is how I accidentally became a product hoarder. In order to break myself from compulsively spending money the first habit, I had to break was my inability to repurchase the products I already knew I liked.
Now, I’m not saying that expensive makeup and skincare are the only ones worth purchasing — there are plenty of drugstore items in my rotation. I had to make peace with the fact that in order for me to always get exactly what I wanted out of my products, I was going to have to spend a little extra from time to time. Here’s my short-list of Sephora selections that are worth saving up for:
The Silk Cream
The formulation of this luscious moisturizer was inspired by an over 200-year-old beauty secret amongst the iconic Geisha of Japan — the use of silk to nourish and care for their skin. Tatcha combines actual silk proteins alongside a variety of Japanese superfoods — such as green tea, rice, and algae — to create this incredible product. It’s impossibly moisturizing while also being lightweight and non-greasy.
Luminous Silk Foundation
The fact that this is Sephora’s #1 selling foundation comes as absolutely no surprise. This cult favorite is truly magic in a bottle. Armani’s patented formula features what they call Micro-fil™ pigments that lay flush with the skin and allow for seamless blending. This type of pigment differs from conventional, spherical-shaped pigments, which can break apart when combined with your skin’s pH. It’s certainly the most high-tech foundation on the market!
Don’t Despair, Repair!™ Honey Moisture Deep Conditioning Mask
As an avid fan of the OG Don’t Despair, Repair! mask from Briogeo, I was delighted when they launched this limited-edition formula featuring one of my favorite humectant ingredients: honey! The unpasteurized honey, along with rosehip oil and algae extract, delivers potent hydration, proteins, and amino acids to stressed-out hair of all types. Despite being incredibly rich, this mask rinses clean with no oily residue and only a faint lingering smell of sweet honey. Stock up while you can, and fingers crossed they make it a permanent staple in their line!
Supersonic Hair Dryer
Take it from someone who frequently has to use hotel blow dryers when traveling for work: there is most certainly a difference between cheap and expensive dryers. Not only does the Dyson dry your hair in half the time a regular dryer would, but it also emits negative ions to reduce frizz and promote shine, all while protecting your strands from overheating with its internal temperature control technology.
CC Me Vitamin C Serum
All skin types benefit from a daily dose of vitamin C, but not all serums are formulated for all skin types. For vitamin C’s effectiveness to be fully realized, it requires daily use over a period of time, and if your skin is sensitive or reactive, finding a product that won’t irritate your skin can be difficult. This serum combines a potent dose of ascorbic acid along with hydrating squalane and a peptide complex to make for a balanced, moisturizing, and effective treatment.
Honey Grail Ultra-Hydrating Face Oil
Justifying the purchase of a facial oil can sometimes be tough, especially if you already have a good moisturizer; but if you have oily, acne-prone, or dry and sensitive skin, a facial oil is an absolute must. This non-comedogenic formula is perfect all on its own, or you can add a couple of drops to your foundation for all-day hydration.
T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial™ 25% AHA + 2% BHA Mask
This one should come as no surprise — we’ve loved Babyfacial ever since the product first launched. It sounds insane to suggest anyone spend $80 on a mask, but this one is so much more. This bi-weekly treatment of exfoliating acids has been a godsend for dealing with hormonal breakouts, dilated pores, oiliness, uneven tone, and fine lines. My skin is addicted to this stuff — Babyfacial is worth every last cent!
Cheek Color
Blush is truly one of the most underutilized makeup products, and without it, your makeup can look flat. If you’re not investing in a good formula, you might end up with patchy color or oxidation after application. The shade range features universally-flattering bright, rosy hues; warm terracotta, and a deep mauve that glide across your skin like butter. I’ve yet to find a drugstore dupe that can compete with Tom Ford.
The Silk Canvas Protective Primer
Dropping this kind of cash on your everyday primer is not necessary, but keeping this particular product on hand for special events, date nights, or any time you really need to look your very best is certainly a good plan. Primer is one of the most important steps in makeup application, and as the name implies, this one lays on the skin like silk. A thin layer of this primer not only protects your skin from pore-clogging makeup, but it is also enriched with active ingredients that preserve a youthful glow and protect your skin from environmental pollution.
B.Well 100mg CBD + Arnica Flower Soothing Skin & Scalp Oil
If you battle with sensitive, irritated, or reactive skin on a daily basis, you can rejoice in the recent trendiness of CBD — one of nature’s most potent anti-inflammatory ingredients. This oil is formulated to be lightweight enough for your face, but its effects are most notable on your hair and scalp! I mix a couple of drops into my daily styling products and do a weekly mask on my scalp the night before washing. My usually frizzy ends and flaky scalp vanish. Keep it in your refrigerator to really maximize the soothing effect of the cannabinoids and omega fatty acids.
