How I got my job as… founder of a well-curated vintage interior concept store

    Life

    by Camille Macawili

This week, Emirates Man speaks to Mateen Shah, founder of Assembly, a well-curated vintage concept store of rare furniture, decor, and collectibles located in Al Quoz that will satisfy all interior desires.
Welcome to the Emirates Man weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and businessmen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome.
Here, Mateen shares how he’s spent his early career before eventually pivoting his passion in curation and eye for design into opening Assembly.

    Mateen Shah, founder of Assembly

What was your favorite subject at school?
Business, economics, and history were my favorites. I’ve always been fascinated by how markets evolve, how industries shape culture, and how history influences design and consumer behavior. Understanding economic trends and historical movements has played a huge role in how I approach sourcing, curating, and growing Assembly Vintage.
    What was your first job?
My first job was in retail—I started working in department stores in sales at the age of 12 or 13 to earn extra pocket money. From the very beginning, I was captivated by the world of storytelling and the art of selling beautifully crafted, aesthetically appreciated products. That early experience shaped my passion for curation and design-driven retail.
What eventually brought you to Dubai?
Moving from New York was not an easy decision, but Dubai’s dynamic, ever-evolving nature drew me in. It’s a city that embraces creativity, innovation, and new ideas while maintaining a strong connection to tradition. The growing appreciation for design and interiors here made it the perfect place to bring Assembly Vintage to life. That said, my journey wasn’t immediate—I spent my initial years in a corporate role before fully embracing entrepreneurship and carving out my space in the design world.
What inspired you to enter the retail/interior design space and launch Assembly?
I’ve always had a deep appreciation for design that tells a story—pieces that have lived a life before they reach you. The idea for Assembly Vintage came from a desire to make unique, high-quality vintage and collectible design more accessible in the GCC. There was a gap in the market for a curated, design-driven vintage concept, and I wanted to create a space that brought together people who share that appreciation.

What are the key elements of your role?
A bit of everything! From sourcing pieces from around the world to curating collections, working on store activations, and connecting with collectors and designers. A big part of my role is storytelling—each piece at Assembly has history, and it’s my job to bring that to life for our audience.
Talk us through your daily routine.
No two days are the same, but typically, my mornings start with reviewing new inventory or checking in on sourcing opportunities. I spend a lot of time curating the showroom, working on digital content, and collaborating with designers and collectors. Afternoons might involve client meetings, styling consultations, or brainstorming new activations. In between, I’m always on the lookout for unique finds.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received?
“Buy with intention.” Whether it’s in business or in life, every decision should be made with purpose. It’s easy to chase trends, but true design—and true success—comes from curating with a clear vision.
    And what is the worst?
That you have to follow a set path to succeed. I don’t believe in rigid formulas—sometimes, taking an unconventional route leads to the most exciting opportunities.

Tell us more about the offerings at Assembly – is there a favourite piece you like?
Assembly Vintage is all about sourcing timeless, design-forward pieces—from mid-century modern furniture to rare collectibles and unique decorative objects. One of my favorite pieces right now is the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman—an absolute icon that blends comfort and elegance effortlessly. Another standout is the Praying Mantis Sculptural Floor Lamp, a truly artistic lighting piece with incredible presence.
What has been the biggest challenge you had to overcome?
Building awareness around the value of vintage in a market that’s still catching on to it. Many people associate “new” with better, but vintage isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about sustainability, craftsmanship, and design that lasts. Educating customers and shifting that mindset has been both a challenge and a rewarding part of the journey.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?
Follow your instincts, but also do your research. The vintage and collectible space requires deep knowledge of design history, authenticity, and sourcing. And most importantly, be patient—great pieces (and great businesses) take time to find and build.
What are your goals for the future?
To expand Assembly Vintage into a curated global platform for collectors and design lovers—a space where rare, high-quality vintage pieces are accessible, celebrated, and thoughtfully sourced from around the world. I also want to continue building unique collaborations, immersive retail experiences, and a community that appreciates the artistry and history behind each piece.

    Resilience

In March’s – The Resilience Issue, we ask six women of influence in the UAE to share the best advice on being resilient in tough times.

    Khadija Al Bastaki
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF DUBAI DESIGN DISTRICT (D3), PART OF TECOM GROUP PJSC
What advice would you give on cultivating resilience?
Resilience is not solely a show of strength but one of agility and creative thinking. Your willingness to adapt to new situations, particularly with a positive, solution-oriented attitude, will ensure that every outcome is in your favour. Make your plans, but gift yourself the freedom of flexibility. This is the outlook I bring to Dubai Design District (d3). Our community and industry evolve so rapidly that we always need to keep evaluating our journey and making necessary adjustments.
Who to you displays great resilience?
Our extraordinary creative community at d3 is resilience exemplified. From business leaders propelling Dubai’s creative economy and entrepreneurs driving innovation to professionals and students shaping the future of design, each member of our community demonstrates outstanding fortitude and foresight that are putting our city on the global creative map. I’m always in awe of their passion and can-do attitude, and this is resilience to me.
How do you tap into resilience during challenging times?
In challenging times, I lean on my communities. I find power and resilience in my valued relationships, whether those we’ve nurtured in d3, which are a constant source of inspiration and insight, my female networks that empower and uplift me, or my family, who are a pillar of strength.

Her Highness Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum bin Rashid AlMaktoum
FOUNDER – TASHKEEL STUDIO AND GERBOU RESTAURANT
What advice would you give on cultivating resilience?
Resilience is about trusting the process. It’s understanding that challenges are not roadblocks, but part of the journey. The best advice I can give is to stay adaptable, embrace change, learn from setbacks, and keep moving forward with purpose. Re- silience is built in the quiet moments, in the discipline of showing up even when the out- come is uncertain. Creativity, whether in art, design, or food, demands resilience because it thrives on evolution. The key is to remain open to growth, to listen, and to refine without losing sight of why you started.
Who to you displays great resilience?
I find resilience in the artisans, the makers, the creatives who dedicate themselves to their craft despite uncertainty. Whether it’s a designer working with raw materials, a chef refining a dish, or an artist shaping an idea, resilience is embedded in the process. It’s about persistence, about staying committed even when the path isn’t clear.
How do you tap into resilience during challenging times?
Resilience, for me, comes from grounding myself in purpose. In difficult times, I return to the core of what I do, whether it’s through the design work at Tashkeel or the culinary storytelling at Gerbou. Surrounding myself with a community of thinkers, makers, and doers reminds me that resilience isn’t about enduring alone; it’s about building something meaningful together.

Her Excellency Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi
PRESIDENT – AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH
What advice would you give on cultivating resilience?
Resilience is about endurance, not just enthusiasm. It’s easy to start strong, but the real test is whether you can keep going when things get tough. Challenges aren’t signs of failure; they’re opportunities to grow, adapt, and discover your true strength. My advice? Own your story. That means accepting the highs and the lows, the successes and the setbacks, without letting any single moment define you. Resilience comes from recognising that challenges are chapters, not the whole book. When you take ownership of your journey, its lessons, struggles, and growth, you build the strength to keep moving forward, no matter what.
Who to you displays great resilience?
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi is a powerful role model of resilience for me. He faced immense challenges at every step while pursuing his vision, yet his determination never wavered. Sharjah’s global reputation as a cultural center did not emerge overnight. He built it through years of dedication, perseverance, and tireless effort–brick by brick, event by event, one university and institution at a time. Every time I face a challenge, I think about his journey, reminding myself that resilience is about persistence, vision, and the courage to keep moving forward.
How do you tap into resilience during challenging times?
Knowing my purpose helps me stay the course during rough patches. In difficult times, I focus on what I can control: my mindset, my response, and my next step forward. Obstacles aren’t the end of the road. They’re part of the journey. Flexibility is key. Sometimes resilience means standing firm. Other times it means adapting and finding a new way forward. It’s also about connection. Having the right people around you, those who remind you of your strength when you start to doubt yourself.

Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi
DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE SHARJAH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH (SIFF)
What advice would you give on cultivating resilience?
Resilience isn’t about avoiding challenges but embracing them as part of growth. The best advice I can give is to cultivate adaptability – things rarely go as planned, but if you stay open to change, you’ll find new paths forward. Build a strong support network, take care of your well-being, and develop a sense of purpose. In my work with children and youth, I see firsthand how creativity fosters resilience. Storytelling, whether through film or other forms, allows young people to process experiences, reimagine possibilities, and find their own voices.
Who to you displays great resilience?
Young filmmakers inspire me daily with their resilience. Many face personal struggles, limited resources, or societal barriers, yet they channel their stories into powerful films. I’ve seen youth use filmmaking to navigate grief, advocate for change, and express joy despite adversity. Their ability to transform challenges into art is a testament to human strength.
How do you tap into resilience during challenging times?
I remind myself why I do what I do–working with young people and storytelling is deeply meaningful to me. I also lean on community, whether through my team, peers, or the young creatives I support. Taking a step back, engaging in something creative, or simply finding moments of stillness helps me regain perspective. Resilience isn’t about pushing through alone – it’s about finding ways to recharge and move forward with purpose.
Sheikha Hind bint Majid Al Qasimi
CHAIRPERSON – SHARJAH BUSINESS WOMEN COUNCIL (SBWC)
What advice would you give on cultivating resilience?
Resilience is about embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. The best advice I can give is to remain adaptable and trust in your ability to overcome obstacles. Every setback is a lesson, and persistence is key to moving forward. Surround yourself with a strong support system, and always keep your long-term vision in mind.
Who to you displays great resilience?
I am deeply inspired by women entrepreneurs who transform challenges into successes. Their ability to innovate, persevere, and lead with confidence is a testament to true resilience. In the UAE, we see remarkable women who balance business, family, and personal aspirations while contributing to the economy. Their unwavering determination is what drives progress.
How do you tap into resilience during challenging times?
During challenging times, I remind myself of the purpose behind my work. Staying focused on the bigger picture helps me navigate difficulties with clarity and determination. I also believe in continuous learning–seeking knowledge, advice, and new perspectives strengthens resilience. Most importantly, resilience comes from self-belief and the willingness to adapt. Challenges may test us, but they also refine our strength.

    Asma Hilal Lootah
FOUNDER – THE HUNDRED WELLNESS CENTRE
What advice would you give on cultivating resilience?
Life can often throw curve balls at you, and it is not always easy to be strong and resilient. Personally, however, whenever I face challenges, I remind myself that God is on my side. No matter how difficult life seems to be, I always remind myself that God has got my back and that the challenges I face are because He’s trying to teach me something, if I just listen carefully to hear what Oprah Winfrey calls “the life whisperers”. My favourite affirmation is from Louise Hay. It is “Everything is working out for my highest good and out of this experience only good will come.” I pray a lot during difficult times, and this coupled with my affirmation ensures I stay strong and am steadfast in my belief that I will emerge from any negative experience not only stronger but with something good to show for it.
Who to you displays great resilience?
The women of the UAE, both past and present. Our mothers and grandmothers lived in very hard conditions before the union and before the economy experienced any sort of boom. They got married at a very young age, raised a lot of children alone without lots of help, and were never encouraged to express how they feel. Few had the chance to go to formal schools and even fewer knew how to read or write. They are the embodiment or resilience in my eyes. Indeed, I salute them and thank them for building great generations of strong men and women.
How do you tap into resilience during challenging times?
I reframe the way I think about challenging situations but first I allow myself to feel all the feelings I want to feel. Then I remind myself that I am safe and that this shall pass. Life has proven to me time and time again that everything works out – and in many cases even better – than I imagined. So, I remind myself how life unfolded for me thus far and pray and speak my affirmation. I also always ask myself how I can take this tough time and turn it into an opportunity for growth.

9 Habits Successful Women Practice When They Start a New Job

No matter how skilled you are or how long you’ve been in the game, starting a new job can be scary. You want to hit the ground running, prove to your employer that they made the right choice by hiring you, and make a good first impression on your coworkers and teammates. But let’s be honest, finding the time and energy for all of that isn’t exactly easy. If you spend half your time during your first few weeks just trying to remember everyone’s names and your new company passwords, know you’re in the majority.

According to the four career experts I interviewed, though, finding quick success in a new role comes down to implementing nine work habits. These nine work habits, which we are getting into ahead, are the ones that all successful women practice whenever they start a new job. Keep reading to find out what they are and why they’re crucial for success at work.

    1. They get clear on the context of their role

According to Leadership Consultant Elizabeth Lotardo, successful women get clear on the context of their role. They make it a priority to learn why their role was created and how it contributes to the organizational strategy, what the higher-ups care about most, and what metrics indicate success. Lotardo explained that this allows them to ultimately offer better ideas, understand company decisions, and make more meaningful contributions.

To determine the context of their role, the founder of burnout prevention company unBurnt, Alison Campbell, says successful women spend time with their manager early on to ensure their goals are aligned. This not only demonstrates a commitment and willingness to learn but also affirms that they’re a team player and will integrate into their work environment seamlessly.

    2. They create a 90-day plan

It’s easy to temporarily lose sight of your goals when you’re adjusting to a new role, but C-Suite Executive Tracey Newell says successful women prevent that by going into a new job with a 90-day plan. She explained that after they’ve clarified what’s expected of them, they’ll define their “North Star” (AKA a big goal) along with other small wins they want to achieve within the first 90 days. For example, taking on a complex project would be a North Star, while building relationships, sitting in on weekly meetings, and identifying areas for improvement would be small wins.

However, creating and writing out this plan isn’t always enough. According to Newell, successful women take it a step further by presenting it to their manager and other important team members. Newell explained that they do this for two reasons. First, it ensures they’ve accurately mapped out their desired trajectory and are on track to make it happen. Second, it gains support from key players in the company. It shows they’re serious about their work and that they appreciate and value input from others.

    3. They focus on building relationships

Being the new kid on the block isn’t always easy, which is why Campbell says successful women focus on building workplace relationships right away. To do this, they’ll introduce themselves to their colleagues and show a genuine interest in their work. Likewise, they’ll schedule times to get to know the people they’ll be directly working with. Campbell explained that this not only builds rapport and trust early but also speeds up the learning curve. After all, enthusiasm is contagious; it makes others want to show you the ropes so you can get settled into your new role more easily. And of course, successful women will check in with their managers and team members regularly for feedback on their performance and ways to improve.

That said, trying to build relationships with your colleagues when you’re working remotely can be challenging, to say the least. But according to the Founder and Principal Consultant of Kera Coaching & Consulting LLC, Ashley Kera, successful women combat this by prioritizing visibility. They’ll schedule regular check-ins with their peers, participate in virtual meetings, and use video calls and emails to strengthen their relationships. The connection might be virtual, but these tactics still build rapport and trust and show employers they’re someone reliable who’s willing to go the extra mile.

“Successful women know that the spotlight is big enough to share, so they always give credit where credit’s due and celebrate team milestones.”

    4. They learn the company culture

Unfortunately, making a work bestie or gaining a mentor isn’t as easy as movies and TV shows make it seem. “Rarely will some extroverted work BFF come up to your desk and explain to you how decisions are made, who the ‘need to know’ people are, and what topics to avoid when you have lunch with the leadership team,” Lotardo said. Obviously, no one wants to make a bad impression, but it’s not uncommon to accidentally say the wrong thing or overstep during the early days of employment.

Successful women proactively learn the company culture to avoid this. Kera explained that they’ll note how people communicate in the workplace, whether the meetings are formal or casual, and if employees socialize outside of work. Learning this is essential because it shows how employees function in the workplace. This, in turn, makes it easier to get settled in and become part of the team.

    5. They resist the urge to showcase their skills right away

“Successful women understand that excelling in a new role isn’t just about performance—it’s about relationships, adaptability, and strategic positioning,” Kera said. So, they’ll resist the urge to showcase their skills and expertise right off the bat and instead listen and observe first. Likewise, they’ll also ask thoughtful questions during the first few weeks in their new role. Instead of asking, “Why do we do this?” Kera says successful women would say something like, “Can you help me understand how this process works?” to show curiosity and respect for existing processes. Doing this not only allows them to determine the company culture but also prevents them from stepping on anyone’s toes or overstepping their boundaries.

    6. They build trust and credibility by being a team player

According to Kera, successful women focus on collaboration over competition. They’ll excitedly take on opportunities that involve working with others and offer up ideas framed as collaborative solutions. Kera explained that rather than critiquing existing methods, successful women might say, “I noticed X—have we considered Y?”

Moreover, successful women know that the spotlight is big enough to share, so they always give credit where credit’s due and celebrate team milestones, according to Campbell. Not only is this a great way to foster connection in the workplace, but it also builds trust and credibility, which is imperative for overall work performance. “Success isn’t about outshining others—it’s about strengthening the team,” Kera explained simply.

“Successful women understand that excelling in a new role isn’t just about performance—it’s about relationships, adaptability, and strategic positioning.”

    7. They take on tasks and participate

Although successful women are smart enough to keep their heads down and mouths shut when starting a new role, they willingly take on tasks that come their way, no matter how mundane or basic they seem. Campbell explained that they do this because it builds trust, demonstrates that they’re a team player, and allows them to learn the ins and outs of the company. Plus, it also shows their superiors that they’re enthusiastic and passionate about their job, and that goes a long way in the workplace. After all, no one wants to work with or give opportunities to the employee who’s made their disdain for their job well known.

Additionally, Kera says that successful women also find low-risk ways to contribute at work. In essence, this means assisting teammates in whatever capacity they need, supporting team goals, and if the timing is right, volunteering to take on projects. These low-risk tasks allow them to subtly flex their skills.

    8. They adapt to fit into the existing workflow

When it comes down to it, no two work environments are the same. The rules, processes, and communication styles vary from job to job, so while successful women believe in staying true to themselves, Campbell explained they’re still willing and able to adapt to the existing workflow of a new job. They might make meaningful changes down the line, but in the meantime, they embrace the current tools, processes, and ideas their employer is using with a positive attitude. Demonstrating that they’re willing to learn further solidifies their commitment to their job and company.

That said, when it comes time to offer up their opinion, Kera stresses that successful women are proactive—not pushy. Instead of saying, “I think we should change this,” Kera says they’ll say something like, “I’d like to contribute—how can I be of help?” This slight change works because it shows initiative and respect for the workflows that are currently in place.

    9. They cultivate a success mindset

“Adjusting to a new job requires the right mindset—it’s a process, not an event,” Kera explained. Therefore, successful women always cultivate a success mindset whenever they start a new job. They know that starting somewhere new can be intimidating, but they don’t let feeling uncertain or uncomfortable get in their way. Instead, they power through and employ the tips above to solidify their credibility and build trust in their new role.

At the end of the day, success doesn’t happen overnight. Rather, it’s a series of intentional steps taken on the career journey that ultimately help you reach your goals. Nothing worth having comes easy, and if you choose to diligently work toward your aspirations in tandem with these work habits, you’ll be wildly successful in every job you have.
