The cool, nice mall in my area had an H&M, and it was glorious. Every spring, my mom would drive me there and I could spend $50 to get a couple new things to wear for the summertime and any family trips we had planned. I cherished that $50 like nothing else—I felt like Jeff Bezos walking around with that $50 bill. (And to think now I’ll drop $50 at the grocery store every week without even batting an eye. Adulthood is a scam.)
My mom taught me how to make my money go as far as I could, and I’ve taken that into shopping, especially for fashion items. My bargain-shopper ways could have given me a closet full of one-off pieces I’d wear once and toss, but thanks to stores like H&M, I can mix and match high and low pieces for a fashionable, sustainable look that doesn’t make me default on my student loan payments.
While I probably will spend more than my mom’s recommended $50 on my spring/summer wardrobe, I’m still looking for trendy but versatile pieces to add to my closet on a budget. Consider this my guide to the best items at H&M RN under $50.
A quick note for my plus-size pals out there: I’ve noticed H&M’s sizing change a little bit. They’ve added an XXL option to a lot of pieces, and most pants go to at least an 18. At Nordstrom, I’d typically always be an XXL; however, I’ve been picking up an XL in almost everything I’ve tried on at H&M lately, and it’s all been a perfect fit. Read the size charts, and when in doubt, I always buy both sizes and return whichever doesn’t work (H&M offers free returns by mail and in-store).
Patterned Dress
This pattern is all over H&M’s site right now, and I can’t get enough of it. At under $20, this dress is a spring must-have.
Rattan Shoulder Bag
Rattan has been a huge spring/summer trend for years now, and this iteration just screams long walks at the park. Perhaps a spring date? Maybe … just maybe.
Fitted Blazer
I tried this blazer on the last time I was in the store, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It’s more on the tailored side, which isn’t usually my style when it comes to blazers, but the pink color adds just a little fun to an otherwise business-professional piece.
Smocked Top
I saw this and immediately thought biiiig Hannah Ann from “The Bachelor” energy. Picturing this top with a pair of cut-off denim shorts and sneakers—no fashion finascos here!
Ribbed Sweater
This lightweight sweater looks so versatile. I’m picturing it tucked into skirts, every style of jeans, with shorts once it starts to actually warm up—the options are endless.
Paper-Bag Pants
These pants look ultra-flattering and comfortable. You could easily wear them to the office with a light blazer or with a denim jacket for brunch. They also come in multiple colors (including the fail-safe black), but I’m all about this sage green.
Puff-Sleeved Blouse
Can you tell green is my favorite color? I’ll be wearing this blouse at least once a week, mark my words.
Pleated Satin Skirt
I, for one, am elated to see the midi skirt trend still going strong this year. This pink shade is bound to turn heads whether you wear it with a graphic tee and sneakers or with a blouse and heels.
Sneakers
Um, excuse me, H&M, how on Earth are these only $30????? I’m shook.
Crêped Dress
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.” I love you, Miranda Priestly, but let me just be happy that flowers are blooming all over my body because finally we can see the sun. Rant=over; I’m buying this dress.
Wide High Ankle Jeans
What better way to celebrate the inauguration of white denim season than this wide-leg pair?
Hoop Earrings
I pretty much only wear hoop earrings, so I’m always on the lookout for unique ones to add to my collection. These lil’ guys fit the bill!
Puff-Sleeved Wrapover Blouse
How many white tops can a girl own? Not enough! Only second to a dress (because it’s one piece, you can’t go wrong!), a stylish, trendy white top with a pair of jeans always looks put-together in the spring and summer.
Utility Dress
Ah, yes, more green. But khaki is a neutral, OK. Catch me wearing this with gold accessories and espadrilles the second the temperature hits at least 60 degrees (which is like three months if I’m being honest).
Crêped Cotton Dress
Future Beth, no need to stress: we already found the perfect white/cream dress for summer.
