Who should be cast in the role?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is ushering in a new phase, and it looks like it will centre on representation. Just in the last three years, the studio released led by an African-American cast and , their first female superhero to get her own film. Now, it seems like Marvel and Disney are taking it up a notch, with Ms Marvel.
This weekend, Disney held their biennial D23 Expo. This time around, the event was centered on the company’s upcoming streaming service Disney+ and the shows and films that are coming on it. From a High School Musical series to the return of Disney Channel’s iconic series Lizzie McGuire, there was so much happening at the expo. However, what we found most exciting was the news that Muslim Pakistani super-heroine, Ms Marvel is getting the live-action treatment.
The series will be one of many Marvel projects coming to Disney+, which will officially launch on Tuesday, November 12. Kamala Khan, who takes on the persona of Ms Marvel is a Pakistani-American teenager, with the ability to change her size and shape. She is a historic character, as she is the first Muslim superhero in Marvel’s comics and cinematic universe. Not much is known about the series so far, but what we do know is that it will be led by British-Pakistani screenwriter, comedian and feminist Bisha Ali.
In the comics, Kamala is a teenager who admires fellow super-heroine Captain Marvel. So maybe we could expect a Brie Larson cameo? We would love to see that happen. Other than Ms Marvel, Disney also announced that and will be getting their own shows. This joins the line-up of previously announced series: starring MCU actors Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan; which will show us what the God of Mischief did with the Tesseract he stole in and , starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany and will lead into the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel.
