How My Husband and I Reconciled Our Spending Differences

One of the first things my husband and I bonded over when we met was that as children we both had a peculiar habit. While playing video games, we both refused to spend any of the “money” we earned while playing. Even if the video game currency was there to help win the game or unlock special features, we held onto our virtual cash. We were fun children. We met very young, and for many years, our spending habits were in sync. As cash-strapped college students, we worked hard and we saved our money for a rainy day. We never knew when we would need money to help pay for school, cars, or living expenses, so we didn’t spend any of it. Our idea of a wild Friday night was a Blockbuster movie on the couch. (That gives you an idea of how long ago we met.) Why the movie love? We could afford to go out to dinner, but we were more comfortable not spending the money. We had a financial routine and it worked well. But when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball.

    When the friction started
For over five years, we were in perfect financial harmony. But a funny thing happened: we grew up. And we grew in different, albeit both good, directions. He started graduate school and I jumped right into the working world. His grad school stipend paid his bills and left a little money to add to savings every month. I wasn’t bringing in the big bucks, but my entry-level salary felt hefty compared to what I was making babysitting in college. Within a few months, I began freelance writing on the side and had even more cashflow coming in.
I was working 60 hour weeks and I was ready to treat myself. The occasional happy hour here, a new blouse there. As my income rose, so did my spending habits. I was never spending more than I could afford to and I was saving money every month. But I can see how from my husband’s perspective it felt like my spending habits were changing drastically.
To this day, I consider myself to be thrifty. I only buy clothing on sale (and rarely at that). I don’t spend money on entertainment like Netflix or concerts, and I skip pricey beauty treatments like manicures or highlights. But I’m not as thrifty as my husband, which caused some frustrations as we adjusted to our new financial reality.

    How we make it work

We still had the same financial goals and saw eye-to-eye on many areas of our financial life. But we knew there were some kinks to iron out if we wanted to live harmoniously.

    Finding common ground
One of our biggest recurring money fights revolved around the fact that after college I wanted to travel. I didn’t travel at all during school and worked every spring break, summer, and winter holiday. Because I was making extra money freelancing, it felt like it was my moment to hit the road. Unfortunately, my husband didn’t feel the same way. He was doing his best to get through grad school in one piece, and on a modest stipend. There came a point where we decided that it would be best if I traveled without him (this was before we married). Well long story short, that plan lasted one trip before an opportunity for us to travel together arose. An opportunity that was too good to pass up. And guess who learned he loved to travel, and that it was worth every penny? Yep, you guessed right.
Now that we both know for certain we are passionate about traveling, we never disagree about spending money on a dream trip. We learned from this conflict, that before rejecting any experiences because of the cost, we should be open to trying them first.

    Respecting our differences
My frugal husband sure comes in handy sometimes. (Hello, hefty savings account and emergency fund.) But I get frustrated when he is too slow to make a necessary purchase because he’s debating the cost. Even if he knows he is going to buy that new pack of phone chargers, he’ll wait a week or two to wrap his head around the purchase. I don’t hesitate before buying a true necessity. It’s not like I want to spend my hard-earned money on a water filtration pitcher, but what can you do? Now, even if I am itching to cross a purchase off my to-do list, I patiently wait until he is comfortable spending the money. That doesn’t mean I’m not annoyed by this habit at times. But the fact of the matter is, it doesn’t harm anyone and it makes him feel more comfortable.

    Planning
Something that makes both of us more comfortable with each other’s financial decisions is planning together. We discuss everything in detail, with no topic off limits. We debate how career choices may affect our finances down the road, think carefully about retirement planning, and we have financial plans for what we will do in an emergency. Keeping each other informed of the financial moves we’re making, whether we approve of the decision or not, means neither of us feel like we’re left in the dark or purposely misled. No secrets and no guilt for us, thank you very much!

There have been some updates made for those travelling from the GCC into Dubai

As travel continues to slowly go back to a resemblance of normal, there have been some changes made to the requirements for some travellers entering Dubai.

Per Gulf News, there was an update made by Dubai Airports stating that “effective from December 6, all passengers arriving (originating) from GCC countries are not required to conduct PCR test before arriving at DXB/DWC [Dubai International Airport/Al Maktoum International Airport]”.
This means those travelling to Dubai from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman via plane no longer need to take a COVID-19 PCR prior to travelling and can get one upon arrival in the emirate.
READ: The ultimate no quarantine list of destinations for UAE residents to travel to
However, it should be noted that this change to travel requirements is only applicable to those passengers travelling by air. Per the Emirates Airline website, it’s stated that these travel updates are “not applicable to passengers arriving by road through the Hatta border, who must take the PCR test 96 hours from the date of the test before departure”.
This change for the GCC countries comes after it was announced in October that those arriving from the UK and Germany could be tested upon arrival at Dubai airport.
Even more recently, the UAE was taken off the UK’s mandatory 14-day quarantine list for incoming travellers. So, those travelling to the UK from Dubai or Abu Dhabi will no longer have to self-isolate.
As always though, ensure you contact your airline for the most up-to-date travel information.

Work & Play – EW’s December cover star Haya Jarrar

December’s – ‘The Party Issue’ – Download Now
The Gift Guide – Download Now
Words & Creative Direction: Amy SessionsPhotography: Greg AdamskiProduction: Kelli MaddockHair & Makeup Ania PoniatowskaFashion Assistant: Sarah JosephLocation: With special thanks to Nyx at Gaia DIFC
Founder & Creative Director of Romani, Haya Jarrar creates unconventional pieces with a touch of the rebellious. Is she on our guestlist? Absolutely.
What do your first 30 mins of the day look like, your morning routine?

I check my emails the minute I wake up and respond to all of them before getting out of bed. Then I begin my morning skincare routine and have breakfast before I hit the gym.
Do you feel more drawn to the creative or the business side?
Definitely the creative side. I didn’t even know what an income statement is until I started Romani.
How did you know it was the right time to launch your own brand and what were the stepping-stones to that point?

You know in life, there’s never really the “right time”. It’s always been my dream to start my own label, so I just went for it. Studying fashion design in university and working in the industry after graduating helped me gain experience and insight which I used to start my own brand with my own identity.

What has been the biggest hurdle since launching the brand and how did you overcome this?
Starting as a very young girl in this very big industry was very challenging for me in the beginning. It was a struggle in every single aspect (finding the right suppliers, creating the right designs that represent me, promoting my brand and making sure I’m doing the right thing). With time, you learn that every successful person in any industry has to struggle a bit before finding their way.
Do you have any mentors or guides and how does this help navigate the right path throughout life and your career?
My inspiration and motivation in life is the person I aspire to be in the future. I try to work really hard on myself every day and try so hard to improve myself because everything you want in life and strive to achieve is already within you; you just need to carve your way in.
What do you look for in terms of hiring your own team?
It’s important for me to be surrounded by a team that understands my vision. That’s the most important thing. I also value a team that is hard working and that has something to bring to the table.
How has this year impacted the industry both positively and negatively?
Negatively, as a brand we’ve struggled in terms of production and missing fashion weeks and not being able to showcase our collections and connect with our customers and having to put things aside for a while and delaying production. Positively, it gave us the time and space to sit back, relax and breathe. It made us realize that we were constantly rushing before. Now, we are not rushing anymore.
How do you approach scaling the business and what works in terms of client retention?
I want to scale my business by going into more retails stores and I want to also expand to other areas (other than fashion) through Romani. We will be making this reveal very soon!

There’s a rebelliousness and unconventionality to the pieces you create – was this part of the brand DNA from the outset?
Yes. Usually, from what I see, a lot of designers base their designs on what buyers are looking for or what is the norm in the region. For me, I wanted to create designs that represent my identity and me from the beginning.
Which pieces are your best sellers and do you notice differing trends globally in terms of sales?
The Sylphina jacket. It’s very dear to my heart since it’s the first piece I ever created for Romani. And luckily, it is our most popular piece.
How has social media affected the luxury industry and which platform has been most useful?
It enabled us to become closer to our customers and helped us understand them more. Instagram has been the most useful by far.
Do you have any pre-bedtime rituals?
Recently, I got into meditation. And it works so much better for me at night than in the morning. Also, I really enjoy a nice walk to clear my mind right before bedtime.
If you were not on your current career path, which other role would you have chosen career-wise?
I believe I was born to create. If not fashion design, then definitely interior and furniture design.
This is ‘The Party Issue’, where and how will you be celebrating this season?
I think I will be somewhere cold, cosy and Christmassy with my husband and family.
What should you gift the host when attending a dinner?
A candle is always a good idea.
What’s your secret to surviving party season and still looking flawless?
Lots of water, exercise, vitamins and a healthy routine.
What is your go-to party outfit?
Either a Romani dress or Romani suit. You can never go wrong with a Romani suit.
What is on your wishlist this festive season?
Bottega Veneta boots, an Alexander McQueen knit…
