One week after Prince Philip passed away, he was laid to rest on April 17, 2021.
Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral for the Duke of Edinburgh was a toned-down affair, taking place within the grounds of Windsor Castle in the UK, with no members of the public present and only 30 members of close family and friends permitted in St George’s Chapel, where the service took place.
In line with social distancing requirements, Queen Elizabeth II sat alone as she bid a final farewell to her beloved husband of 73 years.
A poignant photo was shared to the British Royal Family Instagram of Her Majesty standing alone as her husband’s coffin was carried into the chapel.
Also in attendance at the funeral was Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.
The service was lead by the dean of Windsor, David Conner, who praised the late Duke of Edinburgh’s “kindness, humour and humanity”. He also added that the entirety of the UK was “inspired by his unwavering loyalty to our Queen”.
Prince Philip’s life
Prince Philip, who was born in Greece in 1921, was due to turn 100 in June.
He wed the Queen – then Princess Elizabeth – on 10 July 1947. The pair celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary last year.
Just four years after they wed, Princess Elizabeth became Queen after her father King George VI passed away aged 56. Upon her ascension to the throne in 1952, Prince Philip swore to be Her Majesty’s “liege man of life and limb”, which he was for almost 70 years until his death.

Upon his passing, the British palace looked back on Prince Philip’s time as consort to the Queen and shared a moving speech Her Majesty made at the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary in 1997.
“He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know,” she said.
