Everything to know about IVF treatments and the future of fertility

Lifeby Sarah Joseph1 hour ago IVF specialist, Dr. Mari Mitrani shares how technology is making an impact.Talk us through your background.I’m a physician scientist with extensive expertise in biological medicine and regenerative approaches to help improve my patients’ quality of life. I am currently the Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Gattaca Genomics, the most advanced and complete preimplantation genetic testing available for embryos. Previously, I Co-founded Organicell Regenerative Medicine, as well as the American Stem Cell & Anti-Aging Center, a pioneer in Autologous Stem Cell therapy center in South America. I had been recognised as one of the ‘Top 100 Healthcare Leaders’ by IFAH for the COVID-19 therapeutic work, and most recently recognized for “Scientific Excellence” by the Academia Mundial de Terapia Neural Huneke for my contribution to science. Can you expand on what IVF is?Couples that are navigating through the fertility process through IVF (in vitro fertilization) have an option now to test the genetic count of those fertilised embryos. Just a few cells are taken from the embryo and sent to our state-of-the-art laboratory to analyse the gene components of those cells through Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). A final report is sent to the patients IVF doctor and the Genetic Counselor as well. Are there any specific advancements and techniques that have improved success rates? The IVF world has been advancing every year, thanks to hormone therapy to mature multiple eggs, quality/quantity control, embryo monitoring after fertilisation can now be done in a separate environment like a time-lapse embryo imaging system which allows the embryos to be kept in a control environment without disturbing them while the Embryologist receives high-definition images multiple times a day. Genetic testing for these embryos that are ready for implantation has also advanced to allow the experts have more in-depth information about the genetic component and therefore allow the reproductive physician to decide which embryos to implant first. Furthermore, breakthroughs in cryopreservation techniques, like vitrification, have enhanced the preservation and storage of embryos and eggs, offering greater flexibility and success rates for patients. In your opinion, what are some of the most exciting developments or future possibilities in the IVF space. In my field, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) techniques, such as PGT-A for aneuploidy screening and PGT-M for single gene disorders, has enabled more detailed information for embryo selection. This year, we are launching the next frontier of genetic analysis as we will be able to offer Whole Genome Sequencing, which will allow us to understand in-depth into the embryo’s genetic health. This will be very valuable for identifying many more risks of disease.“Breakthroughs in cryopreservation techniques, like vitrification offer greater flexibility and success rates for patients.”As an advocate for fertility preservation, what options are available for individuals or couples who wish to preserve their fertility for the future? We have clear statistical data referring to maternal age and how it impacts the production of healthy eggs. Understanding that fertility and infertility is so multi-factorial, the one thing we really know is how to act in this specific characteristic. Now we know that after 35 years, women’s egg quality starts deteriorating rapidly year by year, and as a woman who cheers on other women to always pursue their dreams, I would say to always keep this cut-off time in the back of your mind. The possibility of freezing healthy eggs or embryos has a better impact for the future when couples are ready to start their family. Unfortunately, many couples or females wait after this age to start their fertility journey and the doctors and science can only do so much. This is the one thing I would love to keep educating women all over the world about, your chances and decision of having a family in the future is possible if you act early on.Dr. Mari MitraniCan you share any ongoing research or innovative techniques that you are currently involved in or excited about in the field of fertility treatment?Gattaca Whole Genome Sequencing is an embryonic genetic screening which will allow us to understand more in dept the embryos genetic health, this will be valuable for identifying disease risks and therefore a future medical treatment or intervention, if needed. Given the diverse background of our staff, we are utilising artificial intelligence to further analyse and interpret data obtained through genetic testing and further dive on the morphology from time-lapse embryo machines. Are more residents opting for IVF treatments in the Middle East?An executive insight report by L.E.K. Consulting shows that the UAE has the highest infertility rates in APAC (Asia-Pacific) and the Middle East, mainly caused by the high prevalence of diabetes (19 percent as compared to 7percent in the U.K. and 11 percent in the U.S.) and vitamin D deficiency (70 percent as compared to 20 percent in the U.K. and 42percent in the U.S.).What is Genetic Screening and how has this impacted the future of IVF?ll be opting for IVF treatments to further their chances according to the data that has already been recorded.Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is a genetic screening done in fertilized embryos before they are selected for implantation. PGT is advancing and innovating the fertility space, due to its added value on reporting Aneuploidy, which is the abnormal count of genes present in the embryo which explain a higher rate of miscarriages. NGS is allowing us to read valuable characteristics of embryotic genetic in which we are able to predict and or diagnose genetic disorders and diseases beforehand. This is ‘The Tech Issue’ – how has technology improved your daily life?I think 2024 is a great year for Tech. How I got my job as… Head of Marketing at this premium global chauffeur service company

Lifeby Sarah Joseph5 hours ago Welcome to the Emirates Woman weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and businesswomen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome. This week, we speak to Rakhee Raval Shepherd, the Head of Marketing & PR at Blacklane Middle East. Blacklane’s Chauffeur Service delivers an unparalleled ride experience so you can optimise your travel time. All the chauffeurs are meticulously trained to provide a seamless and safe experience for each passenger. With a strong background in marketing, Shepherd has garnered the right skillset over the years in her field as a professional. To understand more, Emirates Woman sat down and spoke to to see how her entrepreneurial journey began. What was your favourite subject at school? There were quite a few subjects I enjoyed, from physical education to geography and learning about different countries and cultures. But I would say that Oral English and Business Studies were my favorite, expressing yourself through words and learning about the origins and growth of businesses fascinated me.What was your first job?My very first job was with Ipsos, a global market research firm engaged by brands to understand their audiences better. It was quite challenging as it involved cold calling people, which is never fun, but back then people had more time to conduct these types of surveys. This led to me working as promotional staff in London whilst I was at university, working with beauty and perfume brands to promote their products at Heathrow Airport, which was perfect for me as I love speaking with people. What brought you to Dubai? After university I worked for a fashion accessory supplier, the company wanted to expand into Asia and the Middle East, so I moved to Hong Kong for two years to lead the growth of the business in these markets. One of my key clients was the owner of a leading fast fashion retailer based in the UAE, we built a strong connection, so I ended up moving to Dubai to support in the execution of the new retail concept the group was launching. It was the right move for me, a great opportunity presented itself combined with the year-round sunshine and tax -free earnings, I would have been crazy not to move to Dubai, I’ve now been here for 14 years. What inspired you to enter the mobility space and talk us through your role as Head of Marketing & PR at Blacklane Middle East. When I looked back at the roles I’ve previously had, it was working with start-ups that I enjoyed the most. So, when I was approached by a recruiter about Blacklane entering the market and the Dubai project being the testbed to launch the companies enhanced business model, which would later roll out into other cities, I felt that same level of excitement. When I joined Blacklane, my objective as Head of Marketing & PR was to launch Blacklane in Dubai, generate brand awareness through multiple marketing channels and work with media to target a B2C audience. We also spent a lot of time looking at our brand positioning and how we could differentiate ourselves from other existing players.Talk us through the concept of Blacklane?Blacklane is an award-winning global chauffeur service operating in more than 50 countries and 200 cities worldwide. Last year we launched in Dubai with an all-electric fleet of luxurious Mercedes-Benz EQS vehicles, driven by our team of Academy-trained male and female chauffeurs. Our chauffeurs work exclusively for Blacklane and receive a monthly salary and we provide upgraded accommodation with amenities so that they are well looked after. We invest heavily in their training so that they can perfect their driving abilities and learn about chauffeuring etiquette which results in providing an exceptional service ensuring that every guest feels safe and comfortable when riding with us. Our services are available through our mobile app making it stress free and convenient to book a professional chauffeur. What are the key elements of your role?I work across all elements of the marketing function, starting from developing both the marketing and PR strategies, supporting the overarching business objectives. Ideating and executing creative content like our OOH campaigns, brand shoots, developing both B2C and B2B marketing collateral, and creating compelling digital content. I manage my team and oversee all brand partnerships, collaborations, sponsorships, tradeshows and activations as well social media and influencer management. In addition, I manage the PR agency and engage in media relations, and of course I am responsible for the budgets, KPIs and reporting.Talk us through your daily routine.Honestly, every day is different which is something I appreciate but generally I start my day with a 15-minute meditation before my kids wake up to prepare myself for the day ahead, I get the kids ready for school and drop them off, and if I’m lucky I manage to squeeze in a quick run or work out before I catch up on emails, align with my team and lay out the priorities for the day. What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps? My role is an all-encompassing role and involves multi-tasking at every moment. Attention to detail is key and having good people skills, most importantly having a motivated and engaged team is crucial. It is highly rewarding when you see the visual outputs or when projects are executed well, and you see the objectives set out being met.Tell us more about the servicesTypically, limousine services that offer professional chauffeurs and luxurious vehicles require pre-booking via the web or by phone, but Blacklane brings this level of service excellence to guests via a mobile app, which is very convenient. We offer a range of services includes one-way and return journeys, airport transfers, hourly bookings, as well as inter-emirate travel. Guests also have the option to book a ride now or to schedule one for later. It makes me proud to say that 50 percent of our chauffeurs are female and that we offer premium quality child car seats, both preferences can be requested via the app. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? When making decisions, quiet your mind and follow your instincts. And what is the worst?Just do what they tell you to do.What’s the biggest challenge you have had to overcome?Balancing work and home life as a new mum. What’s your future for the brand? Our vision for the future of the brand is rooted in promoting an ethical and eco-conscious way to travel. We aspire to lead the industry by example, setting new standards in safety and sustainable travel. Our goal is to redefine luxury travel by intertwining opulence with a commitment to the planet, offering our guest a travel experience that is not only luxurious but also socially and environmentally responsible.– For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and InstagramImages: Supplied & Instagram @blacklanemiddleeast More

This UK-based expert shares her top tips to overcome stress in 2024

Lifeby Sarah Joseph50 mins ago Maryam Meddin, founder of The Soke, a mental health and wellness clinic in London shares her tips on how to overcome stress in 2024.What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine look like?My alarm usually rings at 5am, after which I take a shower, fuel my system with coffee and ready to be out of the house by 6am. Unless there’s something that’s pressing on my mind, that hour would have been all about catching up with the news from around the world and I’ll have tried not to think about work.Talk us through your background.I was born in Iran but have spent most of my life in the UK, so I feel that I have the privilege of being enriched by two prominent cultures. There’s also been diversity in my professional life – I studied law, however later built a career in branding. When that was going well, I decided to explore my mental health through psychotherapy, which then led me to train as a psychotherapist, and finally towards the launch of The Soke. What inspired you to launch The Soke? There was a lot of loss in the first 25 years of my life, including the loss of my father and brother so, from a purely personal perspective, The Soke is really dedicated to them. I was around 40 when I decided to try therapy and it was a defining experience for me. Ultimately it was through this process of both being a user and a provider of mental health services that I was able to identify shortcomings on both sides and wanted to create a service that tried to address them.Tell us about the concept and what services does the clinic offer? We’re a private mental health centre with the full spectrum of services offered by psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and coaches. It was designed to enable individuals with everyday issues (anxiety, depression, ADHD and more) to get the services they needed from a place that would treat them as clients, not patients. People don’t necessarily always know how to find the most appropriate solution for their emotional or psychological problems, so I wanted The Soke to provide all the options under the same roof and to have a strong service element that would help clients navigate the pathway that would serve them best. We satisfy their curiosity and support them so that they can make their own informed choices. You cannot overestimate the value of providing these sorts of tangential services around mental health, especially to parents who feel incredibly vulnerable when trying to make decisions around the care of their children. I believe that by making people feel empowered around their psychological health they’ll start engaging with their thoughts and emotions in a way that’s conducive to improving their wellness and therefore their quality of life. It’s no different to working with a personal trainer for your physical health: you fix the problem areas; you build strength and develop resilience in order to feel better overall. The clinic offers best-in-class psychotherapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors and leadership development specialists – tell us more. Our practitioners cover a range of specialties, from depression to ADHD to compulsive behaviours and everything in between. They’re all chosen based on their expertise and experience, as well as their appetite to collaborate with their peers to ensure that clients get the benefit of their pooled knowledge through a daily Multi-disciplinary Team Meeting. Paying practitioners to spend time quite simply talking to each other and sharing their insights is a model that doesn’t really exist in the private outpatient world, and this sort of collaborative ethos is why we’ve been lucky enough to draw some of the leading names in our field. Increasingly our clients are based outside the UK, and they come to us because our Multidisciplinary clinical model combined with the service element doesn’t really exist where they’re based. What are some of the major concerns that clients talk about? We’re inundated by calls requesting assessments: from ADHD to Educational Psychology and Autism – our primary responsibility is to make sure that concerns are reasonable, rather than say yes to everyone who wants to be tested. After that, it’s the ‘usual suspects’ of depression and anxiety – although we’re seeing much more of it in children than we used to. On the corporate side, workplace culture is playing an ever-growing role in the sustainability of organisations and so we work with a lot with leaders who are striving to strike the balance between being a leader that performs (from a business perspective) and one that transforms (from a cultural perspective). It demands a thoughtful type of leadership that allows consistency and change to co-exist and increasingly modern leaders are recognising the need to have a ‘safe space’ to ruminate and develop their thoughts.“I think that everyone should try to find that one space in their head, where going to it can bring them down from 100 to zero in a matter of minutes.”With stress levels constantly on the rise – what can help lower them?Naturally, I’m an advocate for talking – ideally to someone who doesn’t have a stake in your life and can help you to explore your anxieties without judgement or repercussion. Separate from that, I think that everyone should try to find that one space in their head, where going to it can bring them down from 100 to zero in a matter of minutes. How can employers create a working culture that boosts business resilience and growth?People in leadership positions need to lead by example: show strength in compassion and demonstrate a concerted effort to be a force for the good of the company’s people as well as its other stakeholders. The star players in any sector will want to work for those who can inspire them to succeed and grow as individuals as well as professionals – attracting and retaining talent is always an excellent starting point for longevity. What advice would you give to anyone who wishes to start therapy?A productive therapeutic process relies on the relationship of trust that exists between the client and practitioner – and that doesn’t come overnight, so after you’ve found someone with the right credentials, allow a couple of sessions to see if they feel right for you and whether you can envisage fully trusting this person at some point. That’s when the real work starts between you. Therapy isn’t designed to be fun – if you’re enjoying it because it’s easy then one of you isn’t doing your job right. We all want to start the year on a positive note – what would you recommend?Find that one thing to do or that one place in your head that gives you peace and visit it frequently. This is ‘The Alignment issue’ – what activities ensure you feel aligned daily? My alignment generally comes at the end of the day. I try to spend some time alone with my own thoughts to process and be ready for whatever’s coming next. The Soke’s core value is Generosity – to exercise it as frequently as opportunity allows, whether it’s with time, knowledge, kindness, humour or something tangible. I chose generosity not just because it’s such a positive attribute, but because it’s measurable. I can reflect on my day and examine whether I’ve lived by the value I espouse for my company. If the answer is yes, then I’m sufficiently aligned to fall asleep with a good conscience.January’s – The Alignment Issue with FitnGlam  – Download Now– For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and InstagramImages: Supplied & Feature Image: Pexels @Anete Lusina  More
