My husband is the reason I’m so exhausted. And no, it’s not that (get your minds out of the gutter!). My sleep deprivation comes courtesy of his sinuses. One night while seriously plotting my escape to the guest room, I fell down an insomnia-fuelled research rabbit hole. What I learned surprised me, especially since none of the sleep-hack TikToks I’d binged had ever brought it up. Turns out, the air in our bedroom could be making things worse, for him and, by extension, for me.
A 2022 study found that people with chronic sinus conditions experienced significantly worse symptoms when exposed to higher air pollutant levels. For those who also had asthma, the impact was even greater. It’s eye-opening proof that invisible stuff floating around in the air can have a real effect on how easily we (he) breathe, and how well we (I) sleep.

Enter: the air purifier, an appliance I previously filed under “nice to have” rather than “able to save my sleep and sanity”. But as it turns out, filtering your indoor air is one of the easiest ways to reduce the airborne irritants that can leave noses blocked and partners frustrated.
Does Your Bedroom Make You Feel Stuffy?
The bedroom is particularly problematic for sinus health due to concentrated exposure over many hours. And, while you’re dozing under comfy covers, a few insidious spooks are usually sneaking around:
- Dust mites: these microscopic pests trigger allergic inflammation of the nasal passages, with severe cases resulting in persistent sneezing, congestion and coughing.
- Mould and mildew: these thrive in damp environments, which can worsen in winter. Heavy, moist air can cause nasal tissues to swell, restricting airflow.
Naturally, I wasn’t going to play around. And so I did what most marriage counsellors advise against… I brought a third party into our bedroom: the Solenco 803 Air Purifier Thuza. Consider this a real-world experiment to see whether cleaner air could mean quieter nights and more sleep for me.

What To Look For When Buying An Air Purifier
I live on a tree-lined avenue, two cats, an ant guy (who comes to spray every quarter), and a tree-felling guy (who comes around every six months or so). So a lot is going on in my house, and it spills over into my bedroom. I bring this up because the most important thing I learned when shopping for an air purifier is this: not all purifiers are created equal.
A big part of what separates the good from the great comes down to the HEPA filter. A quality HEPA filter captures dust, pollen, pet dander, mould spores and other tiny airborne particles that can trigger allergies and asthma.
What sold me on the Thuza was its five-stage filtration system. It doesn’t just tackle one problem; it tackles several. Its HEPA filter captures microscopic particles, an activated carbon filter deals with odours (yes, including whatever my cats are up to) and the UV-C light works to reduce airborne microbes within the unit. It’s essentially a bouncer, a deodoriser and a germaphobe all wrapped up in one sleek machine.
Easy Set-up For Sleep Quality
One of its biggest selling points is how little effort it requires. Set-up took just a few minutes, which involves the Thuza assessing how clean your air is and then getting to work. The controls are intuitive, so you don’t need to spend half an hour with the instruction manual before breathing easier.
What We Love About Air Purifiers
It gently gets on with the job (unlike some appliances that constantly remind you they’re working). In Sleep Mode, it’s nice and quiet, making it ideal for bedrooms, while the Auto Mode takes the guesswork out of things by adjusting the fan speed based on the air quality. It’s very much a set it and forget it kind of appliance. We’re also fans (get it?) of the sleek, minimalist design that doesn’t scream “medical device”.
Positive Impact
Its energy-efficient design and intelligent Auto Mode help keep electricity use in check, while every purchase supports a Community Rhino Conservation Initiative. Knowing your purifier is helping protect one of South Africa’s most beloved animals makes every breath of fresh air feel that little bit more meaningful.
Absolutely. My bedroom no longer feels stuffy when I wake up, and the air feels noticeably fresher, even with two cats sharing the space. While I can’t say it’s cured my husband’s snoring, it certainly seems less thunderous these days… and I’ll take that as a win.
