The Fashion Trends We’re Avoiding, and What We’re Buying Instead

Fashion is definitely subjective; one’s man trash is definitely another man’s treasure. No one would ever touch my ratty, old, vintage denim jacket, but it’s one of my favorite items in my closet regardless of the trends year after year. While there aren’t many real “rules” to fashion, trends are here to give us inspiration and encouragement to try new things, incorporate new pieces into our outfits, and have fun. Fashion changes and evolves every single day, meaning trends are constantly coming and going. So, when we’re talking about the hottest trends to add to your closet in 2020, we know there have to be some you’d like to see go as soon as possible.

Whether you’re a total trendsetter or love to keep it minimal and classic, there are bound to be trends that just don’t tickle your fancy. To keep our wardrobes thriving and up-to-date this year, we’re skipping out on a few of 2019’s hottest trends and choosing 2020-approved options instead.

No shame if these are your favorite items either — I’d be lying if I said I didn’t own and wear some of these sometimes too! Basically, if you don’t like these trends, here are some to try instead (plus, budget-friendly options to recreate the look!).

Instead of chunky boots, try sleek, pointed black boots.

While chunky boots had a moment, we’ll always go back to a sleek, pointed-toe pair for a chic look that easily goes from day to night. This boot is classy and sexy, meaning you can rock it with a blouse and blazer for work and look killer in a meeting or with a mini-skirt and graphic T-shirt for a night on the town.

Instead of millennial pink, try bright fuschia.

We can’t say we’ll ever permanently remove millennial pink from our closets, but we’re opting for her brighter sister in 2020. While adding this intense hue into your wardrobe might seem a bit daring (especially if you live for the absolutely Everygirl-approved color palette of beige, black, white, and blush), there are so many ways to tone it down and make it extra chic. Paired with straight-leg jeans and a classic black belt, a bright pink sweater injects a little color without being too extra.

Instead of over-the-knee boots, try knee-high boots.

OTK boots took the world by storm a few years ago, and while we love them with skirts and dresses in colder temps, a knee-high version is the 2020 update we’re looking for. These boots are amazing for all of your winter outfits, but it’ll transition perfectly to spring with a skirt.

Instead of Kimonos, try chunky cardigans.

Instead of the sheer, drapey kimono style, opt for a cardi for a stylish look that’s always cozy and cute. Knit textures have been on trend since the fall, and they’re still going strong in 2020. Paired with a silk cami and a good pair of skinny jeans can take it from day to night. Or with a cropped version, button it up and wear it as a top with straight-leg jeans for a solid sexy librarian vibe.

Instead of ballet flats, try loafers.

A ballet flat will never actually go out of style, but the loafer is the perfect way to add a menswear touch to your look. Loafers — whether backless, heeled, or flat — still have the classic feel that a ballet flat gives off but with a smart, workwear twist. You’ll rarely see an Everygirl office day where one of us isn’t wearing a pair of loafers!

Instead of cold-shoulder tops, try puffy sleeves and shoulders.

A cold-shoulder look is a little outdated now, so we’re looking to updated versions that give off the same vibe. A puffy-shoulder top or sweater adds a bit of interest to a typical jeans-and-sweater look.

Instead of tassel earrings, try minimalist gold jewelry.

Long, tassel earrings have a place in our closets, for sure, but we’re digging minimalist jewelry with intricate and unexpected details instead. While dainty gold earrings are much more understated than a typical statement earring, they are striking and stylish in their own way. You can wear them with practically any outfit, making it easier to justify investing.

Instead of saddle bags, try bucket bags.

Saddle bags are really having their moment right now, but we’re looking to their stylish sister, the bucket bag, instead. We were obsessed with bucket bags last summer (especially in straw and rattan fabrics), but they’re equally as chic in leather and suede for the winter. An olive green bucket bag is on my must-buy list for 2020.
