Gavin and Stacey stars reveal thoughts on reuniting for Christmas special – from ‘dodgy pics’ to bursting into tears

THE return of Gavin & Stacey is the best Christmas present you will receive this year.

I’ve seen the new episode and it’s an absolute cracker – so I can understand why writers James Corden, Ruth Jones and their co-stars are so chuffed with the BBC1 festival special.

But if you are struggling with the wait, we have spoken to the stars to give you a taste of what to expect from the hour-long treat at 8.30pm on Christmas Day.

Joanna Page – Stacey

WHEN Joanna saw a load of missed calls and messages from Ruth Jones earlier this year, a Gavin & Stacey return was not her only thought.

The Welsh actress feared her co-star might have bad news.

Joanna said: “I thought, ‘Is she going to tell me dodgy photos of me are going to hit the papers?’.”

Mum-of-three Joanna is excited about playing Stacey again, particularly now her character is also a mother of three.

But she said there is still one difference between them: “I have a healthy sex life.”

Thanks for that.

Mat Horne – Gavin

MAT has played down any talk of a feud with the show’s co-writer James Corden – but he still couldn’t resist a wind-up.

He poked fun at James becoming a Hollywood success as presenter of The Late Late Show and a viral sensation thanks to Carpool Karaoke.

Of the comeback, Mat said: “I first heard from Ruth and my initial reaction was relief. I just thought, ‘Thank God James has got some work’.

“I was so worried about him that he just wouldn’t be able to eat.”

He added: “I think that’s the best episode we’ve ever done.”

Ruth Jones – Nessa

SHOW co-creator Ruth had to lie to pals when flying to LA to work with James.

She said: “My friends were saying, ‘You’re going out to LA again? Is it for work?’ and I went, ‘No just a little holiday’. ‘Oh you like it out there don’t you?’ ‘Yeah, yeah it’s nice’.”

Despite the team only meeting up fairly recently –  in September 2018 then February – she insists a comeback has been on the cards since the show’s 2010 end.

She said: “James and I have always secretly texted each other ideas for characters, a line for Pam or a situation for Bryn or a new job for Nessa.

“One time I changed the entire lyrics to Adele’s Hello and made it a Barry version and started it ‘All right?’ and sent that to James.”

Alison Steadman – Pam

ALISON is a far cry from Essex mum Pam but says: “When I’m in the character of Pam, I feel so happy.

“I feel I’m in the right skin.”

Welling up, she added: “It just warms your heart.

“I had a lump in my throat watching it.”

Melanie Walters – Gwen

JAMES had trouble contacting Melanie about the show.

She said: “I thought I was being trolled so I ignored his text.

“He rang, it was a weird number, so I ignored it.

“The fourth time, he left a voicemail.”

Rob Brydon – Bryn

THE cast were so desperate to keep the reunion secret they communicated via a WhatsApp group called Gilbert and Sullivan, revealed Rob.

He says it happened after he saw Alison at the Baftas and she spoke in code about the return.

Rob said: “I was walking to my seat and I saw Alison and she said, ‘I’m nervous about G&S’.

“And I just thought, ‘Gilbert and Sullivan?’ I thought she was there nominated for a performance in a thing about Gilbert and Sullivan.

“Then I sat down, turned around and went ‘Ohhh!’.”

Larry Lamb – Mick

LARRY burst into tears after watching the Christmas episode.

He admitted being “overcome with emotion” as he returned to playing his character Mick, the father of Gavin and husband to irrational Pam.

But the former EastEnders actor feared the comeback would flop.

Larry said: “On the first day of rehearsal, you’re scared.

“But this is every bit as good as you could ever have dreamt it might be.”
